Waiting for the Light
Chapter One
~ For a brief instance, I thought I had gone deaf. Alone, sitting on the steps of the back deck, the silence felt deafening, and I shook my head. As rapidly as my world went silent, the sounds returned. The sound of an owl, off in the distance; the croaking of frogs and crickets chirping; all came back in the nightly chorus I was used to.
Taking a deep breath, I reached for a cigarette and lit it. Illuminated by the house interior lighting, I watched the grey smoke curl up and drift away, as I returned my gaze to the sky. Before the abrupt silence, I had caught sight of a bluish looking dot, moving through the sky. I searched for it, as curiosity got to me on that hot June night, in 2019 ~
"Hey, I'm feeling like an orphan... you gonna be out there all night?"
The words barely registered in my mind.
"Huh, what?"
"Jesus, Rick, do you like tuning me out?" came a reply and without waiting for an invite, Rachael, my stepsister, came out the back door and sat down on the steps next to me. "What are you doing, anyway?"
"Stargazing, mostly."
She kept quiet and looked up, leaning heavily against me. "Huh, there are a lot. So, you see anything interesting?"
Turning my head, I kissed her cheek.
"Yes, but it was weird. I saw this blue light, and suddenly everything went completely silent."
"What!?"
"I am serious. Not a frog, not a cricket... nothing. It was dead silent, and then when the sounds came back the light had disappeared."
Straightening up, Rachael turned to look at me and started whistling the theme song to 'The X- Files'.
Grinning, I pushed my shoulder against hers. "Okay, okay, I am not crazy. I know what I saw... or think I saw."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I've never seen that light, or star, or orb, whatever it was, before," I replied, and let out a heavy sigh.
Rach remained silent, rejoining me in my star gazing. "Hey, interested in a nightcap?" she questioned, as she stood up.
"Sounds good."
Rachael returned wearing only a short, spaghetti-strapped, slip handing me a drink.
"You look comfortable."
"Yeah? I was hot. I hope you don't mind." She eased down next to me.
Smiling, I held up my glass for a toast, all the while, staring at her breasts on display.
"Enjoying the view?" she quipped, offering a sexy, little, smile.
"Always."
Rach nudged me with her shoulder, making her tits jiggle. "I know, they are nice, huh?"
I smiled and turned my attention back to the stars. A long silence fell between us, with Rachael nestled against my shoulder.
