The Story
"Hi, am I the last here?" Dillion said, entering the bedroom where five other teenage girls were all sat around. They were in a large detached house at No. 12 Lavender Lane, a cul-de-sac in a wealthy neighbourhood.
"Yes unsurprisingly, are you ever not last!" Macarena teased her tardy friend.
"Sorry! Anyway, happy birthday again!" Dillion chuckled, having already seen the girl at high school earlier. She passed Macarena her present, then sat on the bed besides Alix and Lexi who she noticed seemed to be wearing matching outfits.
Macarena, sat on her dressing table stool, unwrapped the present and thanked Dillion. It was a vinyl of one of her favourite singers, as she had told all her friends that her mom was getting her a record player for her birthday so they had arranged to each get her a different vinyl.
The girl had just turned eighteen, being the last out of her group of school friends to do so, and she was having a slumber party for her birthday. She was of Spanish heritage, with fair olive complexion, dark hazel eyes, brown hair that was so dark that it often looked black, and a slender body.
"It's lucky your birthday wasn't tomorrow, otherwise it would have clashed with Brooke's house party!" Dillion said, referring to a huge party on Saturday that was being thrown by another girl who went to their high school, Ginerva Academy, with the entire senior year invited.
"Yeah, no one would be here if it did!" Jessie, who was sat on the floor on some cushions, teased.
"Well, thanks!" Macarena said sarcastically. "I wish it was next week, as I'm going to my bisabuela's tomorrow for a family birthday party so I'm missing it."
"Bisabuela?" Alix asked. She was new to the group, having been adopted just last weekend by Lexi's mom who had always desired to have twin daughters (hence their matching outfits), so she didn't know what some of the Spanish words that Macarena occasionally used meant, though in truth this one wasn't familiar to any of the other girls neither.
"It means great grandmother. I haven't seen her in a few years but she wanted to have me and some of the family visit for my birthday." Macarena explained. Her great grandmother had four daughters, eight grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren, so the girl didn't know her that well, but she felt it was nice that the woman had remembered her eighteenth birthday and organised a celebration, even if it meant she was missing out on the biggest house party of the year because of it.
"Are you not seeing Lou?" Rosenda asked, perched on wooden chest. Lou was Macarena's girlfriend, who was a couple of years older and a student at Violet Liberal Arts College but worked part-time at a coffee shop where the girl tended to go to study on the weekend, which is where they had met.
"Yeah, she's actually going to be coming tomorrow to meet the wider family... poor girl!" Macarena laughed. "Then on Sunday we're spending the day together."
"Aw cute!" Jessie said. The girls chatted, bantered, and gossiped until Macarena's mom, Maribel, came in with a tray of drinks. She was an attractive woman, in her late thirties, slim with straight dark brown hair.
"A parcel has just arrived for you, I think it's a present from bisabuela." Maribel told her daughter, as she handed each of the teens a soda.
"Oh really? That's nice but she didn't really need to send it as we'll be seeing her tomorrow."
"Yeah, I guess she just wanted for you to have it on your actual birthday." Maribel shrugged. "Let me fetch it as it's a box so I couldn't carry it with the tray!"
The girls continued chatting, until Maribel returned with the wrapped present, having arrived enclosed in a parcel.
"Thanks mamá, I'll open it later." Macarena said, recalling that the previous year the woman had sent her a doll, which she had kept in the wooden chest that Rosenda was perched on, not having much use for toys at her age.
"Come on Macarena, open it now! I love seeing people unwrap presents!" Jessie urged.
"Yeah, it doesn't look like it's a vinyl so let's see what it is!" Dillion joined in.
"Come on, I'm interested too." Maribel added, so Macarena unwrapped the present, a little reluctantly as she was afraid it would be another doll which her friends would laugh at. Inside the gift box was two things neatly wrapped in tissue paper, neither looking like a doll, so Macarena, herself intrigued at what the gift could be, unwrapped the first tissue paper parcel.
It was a dress, pastel purple in colour with a pattern of pink and white flowers across the top. The neckline, high so no cleavage would be displayed, was frilly and the short sleeves were white sheer fabric. In the centre of the chest, the top was adorned with a pink and purple fabric flower, and the skirt was in two layers, the underneath being pastel purple with the same pattern of flowers, and the overskirt being wispy purple tulle.
"Let us all see." Maribel asked, as Macarena looked at the dress wide-eyed, thinking it was like something a princess doll would wear, and blushing, she showed the room. Everyone was just as surprised as Macarena, and most of the girls had to withhold giggles, finding the girlish dress funny but not wanting to offend as it was a gift from the girl's great grandmother.
Maribel had to suppress a laugh too. "What a pretty dress, I think it'll look very nice on you..."
"Shut up mamá, it's ridiculous! Bisabuela does realise I'm eighteen doesn't she?"
"I think so, why, do you think it's too small?" Maribel said, and couldn't stifle a little laugh which reassured the rest of the girls that they could giggle too without causing offence.
Macarena checked inside, and found the dress was actually in her size.
"What was bisabuela thinking?" She shook her head, confused at why the woman, who apparently knew her size, had chosen such a girly dress for her.
"What's the other gift?" Lexi asked, and Macarena turned her attention to the other tissue paper parcel, bigger than the first, and even more reluctantly unwrapped this.
It was a pack of pullups, purple with a pattern of flowers so they practically matched the dress. Macarena blushed in embarrassment. "Does she think I still wet myself?"
"Do you?" Dillion teased.
"No!"
"You did use to so guess she just doesn't realise you stopped...." Maribel said.
