Ianto always does the laundry. Well, he does most of the housework because he works from home three days a week. But while I'm grateful for it I can never find the stuff he's washed. He reorganises wardrobes and drawers to be "more efficient" every week. I'm all for efficiency but I also like being able to find my knickers.
"Where did you put my knickers this week, Ianto!" I yelled from the bedroom.
"Oh, sorry, Min-Ji, I got you new ones. I didn't unwrap them. They'll be in the John Lewis bag in the corner or the wardrobe."
He was right. And he'd got me exactly the cut and fit I like best. He's been very good at providing everything. Well, almost everything. The problem wasn't a home to live in, food to eat, or clothes to wear. It was the lack of a baby.
We'd been married for five years and trying for three. It had stopped being fun two years earlier and we'd known the cause for about three months. Ianto was the problem. Ianto would never be able to get anyone pregnant.
I got dressed and made it to the station to see my tube leave without me. I messaged the office WhatsApp group to let them know I'd be 20 minutes late.
โ
"What's this I smell?" I asked when I got home.
"I made some cawl." He answered. "It looked so wet and cold it seemed the right kind of thing to eat. It'll be OK today but really good tomorrow."
Dinner was more than OK. But we didn't really talk. I could tell he was holding something back. Finally, after we'd shared a Gรผ chocolate soufflรฉ, I prodded.
"OK, Ianto. You've been holding something back. Out with it."
"I saw something crazy. Maybe it's worth trying?"
"What crazy thing did you see?"
"An advert in the newsagent's window. An advert for magic."
I gave him a look.
"I know, I know." He responded. "But Min-ji, we've tried so many other things. Let's give this a go. It's not hugely expensive and you never know. Maybe it will work."
I could feel the desperation in his voice. I could feel my own desperation. I wanted him to be right. My only concern was that we'd both feel worse if we were disappointed. But the fertility treatment waiting list was so long.
"How much?" I asked.
"ยฃ500. Look." And he pulled out his phone and showed me a photo of the advert.
"Why don't you think this is just a way to fleece desperate people for ยฃ500?"
"It might be. But ยฃ500 won't kill us and think of the payoff if it works."
"OK. Call and find out what I need."
I was highly sceptical but maybe he was right. Maybe doing something like this would relax us. Maybe it would give us faith. Maybe a change in attitude would somehow make a difference. And maybe this would help Ianto give me the baby we wanted.

Two nights later we went to an ex-council flat and met a woman, Kaleisha, with hair that had greyed to almost white. Her face was chestnut brown and wrinkled like a well worn linen jacket. She looked the part. If anyone could cast a magic spell it was someone who looked like her.
We explained our problem and what we were hoping for.
"I can help. But there are limits."
"How can you help?" Ianto asked her.
"I can enchant something that will influence you. Something that will push you towards pregnancy." She said while looking at me. "It would need to be something you wear close to your body."
"Like a magic ring?"
"No. Not jewellery." She quickly said. "There's far too much emotion already in jewellery. Ideally, it should be something ordinary and new."
"Like some new knickers?" I asked.
"That would work. And you'd need to wear them when you're fertile. Magic can help but it can't make you pregnant when you're on your period."
"So how does it work?" Ianto asked.
"The magic nudges. It influences. That's all. You'll find yourself choosing things or doing things differently. If you are resistant to change -- well you won't see the change you want."
We agreed to come back with a fresh pack of my favourite John Lewis knickers and ยฃ500 in cash. Then, we picked up the unopened packet of knickers the next day. I was a little disappointed and thought we'd just pissed the money into the gutter. But I promised Ianto to wear the new knickers when my fertile cycle started.
I pinned the packet to the corkboard in our room, next to the wall calendar with my cycle on it.
โ
I pulled the first pair from the packet on the first day of my fertile window. And because I knew where everything was, I had no problem getting to the office on time.
