This is number twenty of the twenty-one parts that make up the Friends series. Each story can be read independently, but the characters and plot line make much more sense if you have read the earlier parts. The series tracks the growth, personally, professionally, and sexually, of a group of friends, all in their mid-twenties. Alan and Lisa are a young married couple. Audrey and Tim were recently engaged and are Alan and Lisa's best friends.

This chapter begins on a Thursday morning, the day after the previous chapter, "The Games Begin" ends. On Friday, Alan and Lisa will host Lisa's work colleague Michelle and her new girlfriend Lizzie for a fancy dinner. Audrey has a Saturday pool tournament paired with Maria, the wife of Javi, another work colleague of Audrey and Lisa. The story returns to being told from Lisa's perspective.

Marty sticks his head in my office, "Emergency meeting with you four in the conference room, now."

I can see him heading over to Michelle's office from my mine.

Soon Audrey, Javi, Michelle, and I are all looking at each other. The four of us are somewhat running the company now. Other than Marty, who founded the firm, the partners seem to have largely checked out from any day to day operations of the company.

Unbeknownst to us at the time, Marty hired all of us straight out of college a few years ago with the intent to grow us into taking over the company. We each learned of this plan a few months ago, including that we are to be named official partners in six to eight months, when the existing partners fully retire.

"Eddie quit today and did so dramatically," Marty announces, "He was on a two day visit to a client This morning, in the middle of a public meeting with the client, he stood up, announced that he quit, and walked out. I have previously talked with each of you about the expectation that he would eventually quit, but even I didn't expect him to do so this unprofessionally."

Eddie was supposed to be the fifth of us, Marty's dream team of budding superstars. Eddie's specialty was economic development. While the four of us had thrived, Marty had lost faith in him and Eddie had been notably absent from our recent promotion to Senior Analyst.

Audrey and I had long referred to him as, "Sleazy Eddie". I don't think Michelle thought any more highly of him; he regularly hit on all three of us women. Javi didn't seem to like him either. I suspect Eddie was a racist along with being a misogynist pig. He tried to hide this all from Marty, but Marty is spookily aware of our secrets.

"I am about to hop a plane to visit the clients and smooth over things. Audrey and Lisa, I need you to work together, reviewing everything you can find about his economic development plan he was working on and look for any holes and any ways to improve it. I will be combing through the files on the plane, but I want you two to send me what you find and anything I can use to sweeten things for them by the time I land. Michelle, start thinking about how to present this to any other clients who hear about it. Javi, I don't think I need anything from you, but pass any brilliant ideas through either Michelle or Audrey. Thanks everybody."

As we start to head out, Marty adds, "I will check in with you this afternoon and tonight. Anyone not able to stay connected tonight?"

Everyone seems comfortable with the plan. Audrey checks with Becky, Marty's assistant / office manager, to see if anyone needs the conference room today. Hearing no, Audrey and I start pulling all the paper files along with two extra laptops around the conference table.

Audrey is pouring through the financials of everything, while I am trying to understand the impact on the city itself. Is this the best way to spend their money? Are these the right districts to focus on? My specialty is neighborhood revitalization plans, but I was backing up Eddie recently, knowing this day was coming. Audrey is a finance and accounting geek at heart, at least if you completely ignore sex and pool. But when she was first hired, she was helping with the economic development work until Eddie came on board.

After an hour, Audrey asks Becky to order lunch for the two of us so we can keep working. Phil, one of the retiring partners, sticks his head in about an hour later. I hadn't seen him in almost a month, but he was the company's original economic development guru. We can definitely use his experience.

Audrey and I explain what we have found and where we think things could be improved. He likes most of our points, but explains why a couple won't work. After some more thought and more discussion. We find alternatives and soon Audrey is writing a three page memo for Marty, containing talking points and ways we can improve the plan. And Audrey has found some good ways to shave the costs for the city, to put a cherry on top.

She sends our write-up to Marty by the time his plane is scheduled to land. Ten minutes later, we get a thanks, looks good note back.

Audrey and I stick our heads into Michelle's office to give her an update. The two of us return to the conference room to divvy up Eddie's existing clients between us. She sends Michelle a list of which clients each of us will handle, in case a question comes in. I think we both will be working well into the night reading files, bringing ourselves up to date on each of them. At least all of this should be electronically available, so we can work from home.

Audrey and I had carpooled this morning, so we talk more about economic development and Eddie on the way home. I drop Audrey at her apartment. We got back too late for her to see Tim before he left for Aikido; she has a quiet evening to herself to study the reports.

Alan is home when I arrive. I had texted him already, warning about my evening. He can work from home as well and always has work he needs to do, especially tonight, since he is taking tomorrow afternoon off to prepare the big feast for Michelle and Lizzie. We grab a quick dinner at Tito's, a local high-end pizza place, but neither of us have our usual alcoholic drinks with dinner.

I work later than I usually stay up, but I am at least reasonably aware of the state of each of the clients suddently in my care.

I apologize to Alan, but I am too wiped for any extracurriculars in bed tonight. He is a bit disappointed. I think he can survive; Audrey played my game last night. She was tied to the table, stark naked. And four of us (including Tim and MaryA) drew cards for the right to do whatever we wanted to her sexually for a turn, time determined by the card. It is almost as much fun on the player side as it was when I was the one tied to the table last month. I think all five of us were sexually sated last night and that will have to last until tomorrow for Alan.

I wake up in the morning to the sound of Alan's shower. I would love to roll over and go back to sleep. But Audrey is not carpooling with me today, so I can't count on her waking me up. For all I grouse at her, I do enjoy her watching me wake up, ogling my body. And I promised myself I would go to the gym this morning; that is why we are not carpooling.

Then I remember Alan's disappointment last night. If I get up now, I can make that up to him in the shower and still make it to the gym. And I need to catch back up on my own work after spending all my time on Eddie's yesterday (and last night).

I slip out of bed and sneak into the back of the shower, grabbing Alan from behind. I squeeze him in a big hug, then start teasing his nipples. I slide a hand down to his quickly rising member. He turns around and kisses me.

"I don't think my lady parts are quite awake enough to do anything, but I can give you some morning relief."

"That would be greatly appreciated."

We go back to kissing for a minute before I crouch down and take his cock in my mouth. It never takes him long in the morning; I think he would rather shift most of our sex life to the morning, but morning sex generally doesn't work well for me.

I pull off at the last minute and he sprays the top of my tits with his cum. He likes the feeling of cumming in my mouth, but he does enjoy the visual of marking me. With the easy cleanup, the shower is the ideal time to satisfy that kink.

We eat the leftover raspberry chocolate chip muffins from breakfast yesterday and some fresh fruit before heading out. At the gym, I stick to my new routine of fifteen minutes on the rowing machine and a half hour stationary bike ride. I feel virtuous by the time I get to work, still earlier than my usual arrival.

I dive into work preparing for my trip next week, my last sales trip paired with Marty. I will get a break from these for a month or so, then be doing them with Javi. My style is to just absorb as much information about the client cities as I can. I don't have Marty's charisma; I have to win customers over with competence, and for me, that starts with knowing as much as I can.

I take a quick break when I see Michelle come in. I check with her for any news from Marty and whether any of the other clients have reached out. She says Marty said things seem okay with yesterday's client. They were kind of shocked by Eddie's unprofessional departure, but have been impressed with our response.

I also check that everything is still a go for dinner tonight. She says she and Lizzie are looking forward to it.

Audrey walks in before I am even back to my office. I check with her about what she has heard from Marty.

"We exchanged a bunch of e-mails last night and again this morning already. Things are going well, but one of us will probably need to make a follow up visit to them in a couple of weeks," she says.

She clearly notices me looking surprised at being left out. "Don't worry, he hasn't lost faith in you or anything. Marty didn't want to interrupt you. He knows your style is to completely immerse yourself in a client. He was afraid of breaking the vibe."

I work solidly until our weekly partners-to-be lunch.

We gather in the conference room as usual. Audrey starts the meeting saying, "Marty has something he wants to say to us."

She puts her phone down on the table. Marty's voice comes out.

"Can everyone hear me?"

We all say yes.

"Good. This is an awkward way to talk to you, but I don't think we will all be in town at the same time until next Friday, so it should be today.

"I can't even begin to say how proud I am of the four of you and nothing brings that out like our mini-crisis yesterday. Phil left me a nice message saying how blown away he was by the work Audrey and Lisa did yesterday. It's really his first time working with you, Lisa. And you have grown immensely, Audrey, since you last worked regularly with him three years ago.

"It is obviously your company now and it is silly not to make that official sooner. But I need to give Michelle some leeway. Even she can only pull so many rabbits out of a hat on a moment's notice. You have all passed your probationary period with flying colors. And I think we will make your promotion to partner come at the end of this year. It will still be company confidential, but I will send out a memo to everyone in the office today.

"Michelle, you and I need to work out a timeline for you to roll this out. We may not have time to unfold your entire plan in the next two to three months, but figure out what we can do. And Audrey, tell her about the Atlantic article. It is definitely a go.

"And thanks from me to all of you. I staked my standing on the five of you. Even if Eddie flamed out, the other four of you have more than made up for it. I will see you in person next week, especially you, Lisa."

"Marty," I say, "Do you think we can work an arrangement with the partners to do occasional short de-briefs with us after they are fully retired? That meeting with Phil yesterday was really valuable. I would hate to lose all their experience."

"I think they will go for that. Phil will be tickled pink that you suggested it."

As he hangs up, we sit staring dumbfounded at each other for a moment. Then Audrey starts high-fiving everyone. I high five Michelle and Javi, and they high five each other.

Audrey says, "The Atlantic article he mentioned is largely about you, Michelle. It's going to be about how cities and towns handle the media in a sudden crisis. One focus area will be the difference with having a media consultant to help or not. The writer will be contacting you soon to interview you and some of the cities you worked with. You will be the exemplar for the article."

Michelle is tearing up, but they are tears of joy. "Is it okay if I hug you?"

Audrey nods and Michelle comes over and gives her a hug. She walks away, wiping the tears from her eyes.

But then she is ready to go full speed. "So we need to go into overdrive to get the PR out. The new NYT article about Lisa should be out sometime next month I think. He will be contacting you directly soon, Lisa. I will turn on the spigot for the power couple article about you and Alan. I bet I can get you two on the cover of the January issue of Boston magazine. Audrey, if you and Maria would just win that tournament next week, it would make my life so much easier.

"I think the article that I am working about you Javi, will come out a bit late for the new timeline. I want to wait and see if your mom's painting gets accepted into the exhibition or not. If she gets in, and Audrey and Maria come through, then once the partnership is announced, that story will definitely be an easy sell.

"I think my idea for promoting the group of us at once as a new business best practice is going to have to wait until after the announcement. Unless anyone has any brilliant ideas to promote it faster."

Audrey says, "Thanks for handling all this, Michelle. And the Atlantic article was really all Marty's doing. So give him a hug, too, when he gets back.

"With Eddie officially gone, Lisa and I will pick up all his work. Javi, we may need you to do more solo sales trips. Starting the week after next, you will be taking weekly sales trips with Marty for three or four weeks, then I think it's you, with Lisa when she is available and you think it will help close a sale.

"Marty and I were talking last night about our recruiting right now. I am going to help him winnow possible candidates for both high urgency positions, a new economic development person and an IT partner. We are still looking for someone like us, or rather like we were, for the economic development position: a bright, energetic, graduating senior with a huge upside. The IT partner is a very different search and Marty thinks he may have a lead on someone. I am flying out next week to meet with her. If I like her, I will schedule a visit here to meet with all of you and Marty.

"Make sure Becky knows any days you will be out of the office; she will be helping schedule that visit.

"Oh, and on a personal note, Tim got a new job this week."

I don't think Michelle has ever met him, but I guess Javi and Tim hung out together at the tournament last week. And Tim's unemployment has impacted Audrey's presence at work.

We settle in to eating our lunch while talking about a range of topics. We each take a moment during lunch to text our significant others to relay the updated schedule for our promotion.

I make sure Michelle knows where our condo is and that dinner is planned for six. Casual dress.

I am trying to keep my head buried in my prep work all afternoon, but about 2:30 I get a steady stream of the office staff sticking their head in, congratulating me. I guess Marty's memo got released. I finally give up around 5PM and head home.

When I walk in the condo, I can smell onion soup. Alan is actively grilling chicken on the stove.

"I never did hear the final menu," I say.

"It's a five course meal. You said they liked wines, so there is a new wine for each course. It starts with a cheese, bread and fruit plate, paired with champagne. I have three different soft cheeses, fresh baguette I picked up at the bakery this afternoon and some melon and strawberries.

"The second course is french onion soup paired with a nice Pinot Noir. The third course is linguini in a light garlic sauce with shaved truffles, paired with a Chardonnay. The fourth is a mixed green salad with grilled lime chicken. I have a Pinot Grigio for that.

"And I made an orange chocolate mousse for dessert, along with some port. I tried to keep the courses relatively light, since there are a lot of them. And the linguini is the only one requiring me to leave the table for longer than about a minute to bring out."

"That sounds really good."

A few minutes later, the doorbell rings and I let in Michelle and who I assume is Lizzie. Michelle introduces us, saying, "Lizzie, this is Lisa. She is the one who gave me the courage to realize who I was. Without her, there would be no us.

"And Lisa, this is Lizzie, the love of my life."

She gives Lizzie a hug and reaches up to kiss her. Lizzie is taller than Alan, probably around six two. She is slender and VERY muscled. I should have remembered that they play basketball together. She has very short hair, wearing a sleeveless tee shirt that does not come down to her navel, ripped jeans and has numerous tattoos along both arms. I don't think I would want to see her coming towards me in a dark alley.

Not sure what I was expecting, but this was not it.

Alan comes out of the kitchen, apologizing for not being able to greet them immediately. He is still wearing his apron over his work clothes.

"This is Alan, my husband. Michelle I think you have met and this is Lizzie."

He shakes their hands.

"So you are the Alan that Michelle keeps going on and on about," Lizzie says, sounding somewhat annoyed.

I can't tell if there is some hostility in that or just social awkwardness.

"Why don't the three of you take a seat at the table and I will bring the first course out for us to enjoy in a minute," Alan says.

"How is your art coming along, Lisa?" Michelle asks, trying to break the ice a bit. "I think the only picture of yours I have seen is the drawing of Alan on the cover of Wired."

"If you want, I can show you a couple of my other pictures while you are waiting. Two of these are being submitted for the same exhibition as Javi's mom's painting is."

I bring over a half dozen pictures. I include the two ones that are being submitted and the pelican from St John. I also include a picture I drew of MaryB this week, the last picture of Audrey from last week's class and the picture I drew of Audrey and MaryA kissing on Monday.

Lizzie looks like she is licking her lips at a couple of the pictures.

"I am crazy or are two of those pictures Audrey? Prim and proper Audrey?"

Alan is bringing in the cheese plate and almost drops it at hearing that.

"I keep telling you that Audrey is a very different person outside of work. I won't tell it, but ask her about the old bastard story. Or you can hear Marty's version of it. You really have to know that story to appreciate her."

A loud pop accentuates the end of my sentence as Alan opens the bottle of champagne.

Alan pours a glass of champagne for each of us and sits down. "The cheese closest to Michelle is brie, the second, the one by Lisa is Camembert and the one closest to me is Chèvre."

"Oooh, fancy cheeses and champagne, to go with fancy drawings of lesbians. Aren't we all so fancy here?" Lizzie says, her voice dripping with snark and distaste.

Michelle stands up, grabs Lizzie's arm, and says, "Excuse us for a moment."

She half drags Lizzie into the guest bedroom and slams the door shut. Alan and I look at each other. Then we hear the voices from the other room.

"What the fuck is that attitude, bitch!" Michelle is yelling. "These are people I care about. At least pay me the common curtesy to be civil to my friends. I have never seen this side of you and I don't like it."
