Chapter 4.
I wake from a deep sleep with the feeling of satisfaction seeping through my body. Maybe now that it's over with I can get over this silly schoolboy crush and get on with my investigation. I sit up and look around. Ella's nowhere to be seen, and her clothes have been picked up while mine are still rumpled on the floor. I hop off the bed and get dressed before padding down the hall and into the kitchen, where she's sitting at the counter. Her hair's pulled into a messy bun. She's wearing the same hoodie from last night, and jeans that are begging me to peel them off her. Maybe the investigation can wait a little bit longer...
"Mornin'," I say, walking past her towards the full coffee pot.
She says nothing as I pour myself a cup, flipping through the pages of a file...I almost ask her what's in it but she seems preoccupied. I lean across the counter across from her. "Morning," I say again as I place the mug in front of her. She looks up at me. I can't read her expression.
"Wayland Barker," she says.
I figured as much.
"What?"
"Wayland Barker," she says turning the folder around and pointing to the page. "It says here a man name Wayland is the key witness in the death of those cops."
My eyes narrow as I look at her, almost in disbelief. "Seriously?" I ask. The folder was a file on the murder of my friend... where she's the lead suspect.
"What do mean seriously?"
"I mean you want to ask me about a witness now? First thing after last night?"
She yanks the folder back and and closes it. "Yeah, first thing after last night when you accused me of murdering 3 cops."
"Yeah, one of which was my best friend!" Our voices are louder now.
"So I would think you'd be more interested in finding out who killed him." She stands up and glares at me as she grabs the coffee and goes to sit on the couch.
"What do you think I came here for?" I ask, following her.
"Oh so what, your dick just got in the way of your sleuthing?"
I don't even know how to respond to that. I sit down on the ottoman in front of her. "It happens."
She doesn't look at me as she drinks, clearly fed up.
I sigh. "Look he's an accountant."
She looks at me. "An accountant?"
"He had missed his subway and was on his way to find another when the gun went off...said he saw a short woman with dark hair before he ran off scared."
I watch her chest rise and fall as she looks at me, worried and confused at the same time...
"We matched your prints to the ones found on the gun left at the scene. "
She closes her eyes. "I am not short." She says, taking a sip.
I chuckle and scratch the back of my neck.
"I'm going to go take a shower," she says standing up. "And when i get out you won't be here, so bye."
Chapter 5.
I can still feel his touch on my skin as the hot water falls on me. His hands running over me, the weight of him against me as he pressed his soft lips to mine...the throbbing between my legs where I swear i can still feel him stretching me open even though he's gone. Part of me wishes I'd stayed in bed with him this morning. He was so warm...Damn. I can't afford to be falling for the man trying to put me away for killing someone. I'd hoped he could help me...but he's too much of a distraction.
13 DAY LATER
I've read the file over and over again. On a weeknight in an abandoned part of the subway, 3 cops were found shot to death. One of them, Gavin Dubois, was Ashers partner, a man I never even knew. But somehow, a gun with my prints ended up at the crime scene so now I'm the lead suspect. Well, Tess Reims is. Poor Tess. I stole her identity 2 years ago. I have to figure out how I'm connected to all this... who would want me in jail? I mean besides all those curators I robbed. I have to do some digging myself. I decide to go to the scene of the crime.
~~~~~~~~
It isn't difficult getting into the subway tunnel. They closed this part of the system after floods damaged parts of the track. I can see where the bodies were, based on the pictures I have from the file I stole from Ash.
I study the scene, trying to figure out how Barker could've seen the shooting without being in the tunnel himself. I'm too preoccupied to notice the neanderthal sneak up on me.
"What do you think you're doing," Asher asks me.
I squeal and jump with surprise.
"Don't sneak up on people!" I say hitting his chest. He laughs and I glare at him. He grins at me and I turn around.
"Didn't know you were so jumpy," he says slapping my ass.
I turn around an in anger try to slap his face, but he grabs my hand and yanks me close to him.
"Let go," I say calmly. I'm not going to let him get the better of me. He looks at my face for a moment before releasing my hand.
"What exactly are you looking for?" He asks.
"I'm not exactly sure," i say squatting down to look where the first body laid, Gavin Dubois...Ashers partner.
"I promise there's nothing here the feds didn't find already."
"Maybe you're right..." but I see something tucked underneath one of the rail ties. I get closer to the ground so I can see better. "Aha," I say.
"What?" He asks.
