Los Angeles, California

Two thuds echoed in the small bathroom, followed by the sound of breathing. The fresh scent of lemon perfume left a strong impression in the air. It was from a boutique designer brand that sent a sample bottle that was now sitting on the counter, directly below a small, oval shaped mirror. Kara Del Toro studied her reflection, making sure that her makeup had been applied perfectly. Shining gold streaks were visible in her long locks of brunette hair. This dark blonde look was another recent choice to go with her look. Below her face was a creamy, beige crop top hiding her busty chest. Kara allowed a friend to talk her into trying a brown colored top to go with a black leather outfit. The straps covered her shoulders with only four buttons to contain her breasts. She wanted to give the impression that the outfit was a size too small. Below her chest was a pair of leather pants to match the jacket hanging on a coat rack.

Life changed for most people in their thirties. Kara was coming to terms with this fact now at thirty-one and looking to the future. She had enjoyed a successful career in fashion modeling despite not reaching the heights she once dreamed of. Ten years had passed since she first broke into the industry. Kara had given up on the idea of becoming a household name like other models from the time frame of when she entered. The struggle she had with trying to reach success gave her a different mindset. Nothing was ever guaranteed, let alone to be taken for granted. She wasn't an actress or a social influencer. Kara took pride in being known as a professional model first and foremost. While she was happy to accept deals from brands to be modeled on her social media profiles, Kara refused to consider herself to be an influencer.

Throughout the years, she collected names of various associates. Agents, photographers, PR consultants, and the like. All of them worked a different gear in the industry. She had the experience on her side at this point to branch out on her own. For the past three years, the thought had been in the back of her mind. Kara saw what other models were doing online and wanted a piece of that action. Some were able to turn their careers into a more profitable venture by utilizing the online world. By this point in her life, Kara was looking for some kind of balance between the two. She had gone through multiple agents who served her right by opening pathways into the industry. Now she had a moment to consider her name online and the future going forward. Kara had big plans for launching her own company, but the time wasn't set. She still needed some help figuring out where to go with specific fashion brands.

Today's interview was related to that question. Going into 2025, Kara put out word that she needed a new social media manager. It was a bold decision to hire someone from outside her inner circle of friends and previous managers, but Kara felt the need to go this route. She placed advertisements online for this new job. All of them were processed through her agent, whom she allowed to help in this search of strangers. It was his duty to do background checks and all the legal means necessary to filter out any potential troublesome individuals. If Kara had a good first impression on someone, she preferred to do the interview alone in her villa in the hills. The luxury home served as a base of operations when she wasn't traveling to do photoshoots. Kara converted one of the rooms downstairs into a personal office. She saw the opportunity to welcome her new social media manager into her world by conducting the interview alone in her house.

Through the search, Kara settled on a thirty-three year old man with the name Kyle Alexander. He was from Germany with dual citizenship going back to 2018. His resume proved interesting with various tech companies and social media management both in Germany and the United States. He had no previous history with managing social media accounts for other models. That was something that made Kara feel good about this man. When she was ready to interview him, she invited Kyle to her mansion. They arranged a meeting where her bodyguard was required to pick him up in one of Kara's vintage cars. She thought a ride in her red 1980 Ford Thunderbird might give Kyle a good first impression. It wasn't as fancy as some of the cars she knew people outside of Hollywood owned, but it was still a prized possession. Kara acquired the car as a gift from a family member who suggested it would be well suited as a work car.

Kara didn't greet Kyle when he arrived. She left her bodyguard to offer him a drink while she fixed her hair and made sure that her outfit was perfect. This interview would serve as a test outside of work related subjects. Kara took one last glance at her cleavage, thinking to herself if he would be able to focus on her face and not the display below. The leather pants were high-waisted with the zipper tucked at the same level as her belly button. Kara grabbed the leather jacket and slipped her left arm inside first. Once she had it on, she glanced down at the zipper and decided not to fasten it. Her black stilettos made a ticking noise as she stepped across the white tiles of the bathroom. That sound would become a louder click and clack as she left the room and stepped across the stone, square tiles leading into her office behind a white door. She gripped the knob, slowly turning it, and walked in.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Alexander."

As she spoke, he smiled from his chair. Kyle was dressed in a white collared shirt and black slacks. With a black jacket, it would've made the perfect office uniform for his slightly overweight frame. His face was almost clean apart from the five o'clock shadow. The light shining from the windows across the room brightened the chestnut brown locks of his short, trimmed hair. His eyes were brown, similar to her own. Across the room was a row of reflections in oval shapes with a single line down the middle from the row of three windows. A handsome man sitting in my office, Kara quietly thought to herself.

"Hi, Miss Del Toro. It's an honor to be here today."

Moving towards her desk, Kara broke eye contact to look where her black leather chair was. She turned it so she could sit down. Atop her desk sat some white papers underneath a closed laptop. On the right side sat an empty white tumbler cup on a drink coaster. Kara sat down and smiled at Kyle as she placed her elbows on the glossy, black marble surface.

"So how should we start this? I guess I can ask you where you're from. I saw that you're from Germany."

"Yes, I'm from Kleve. It's on the Dutch border if you're curious."

"That's interesting. I've never had anyone on my team from Germany before."

"Anyone before me who isn't from America?"

She nodded.

"Yes, I had an agent from England about seven years ago. So do you work locally?"

"What do you mean?"

"Do you live in this city?"

Kyle shook his head before answering.

"I wouldn't necessarily say I live in L.A. I worked in Miami before coming out here for my last job."

"So you lived there instead?"

"Yes. I know the city well too."

A smile ran across Kara's face as she leaned back in the chair. Any mention of Miami brought back memories of good times.

"That's nice. I've always liked spending time in Miami myself. So tell me, how did you find the ads I put out for this job? Where do you follow me online?"

"Instagram is the main one. But I have you on TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube as well."

Her lower lip fell for a brief moment. Kara was impressed by this level of dedication. A true fan was sitting across from her.

"Wow, that's all bases covered."

Kyle nodded in silence.

"I must say, I'm quite impressed. I thought you may have heard about this job from someone that you used to work for. That led me to think we know some of the same people."

"I don't have any friends in this town if that's what you're wondering. I usually just work and go home."

"You don't hit the bar for a beer after work?"

Kara grinned, teasing him with the question. Kyle shook his head before responding.

"No, I'm not a drinker."

This at least told her he didn't have a girlfriend along with a lack of social life. Kara knew better than to ask about any relationships. She had her own way of feeling out a man's personal life, treating every answer as a puzzle piece of sorts. After a moment, Kara continued the interview with a new question.

"How experienced are you with photoshop? I'm looking for a social media manager who can handle image and video editing."

"Well, that's two different things. Don't worry, you're in luck. I know the difference since I've been handling both for years. I use a few Adobe programs as well as some newer apps."

She nodded as he continued speaking.

"I take it that you want to save money having just one person handle all this? That way you aren't paying another person who needs to edit things and then a different person to post it."

Flashing her teeth in a smile, Kara laughed.

"You're onto something. Does it make me a bad person to only want one guy instead of needing to pay more?"

Kyle chuckled, shaking his head.

"Of course not! I imagine fewer people to pay is less stress. I like a boss who knows how to save money."

Feeling more comfortable in his presence, Kara stood up from her chair. She turned her back to him. Kyle spoke while she took off her leather jacket.

"Things are changing right now. With the rise of AI apps, it's going to be a lot easier to get stuff done without the need for multiple people on a payroll."

The topic of AI was something Kara was vaguely interested in. She heard whispers from others about how useful it was. Some people feared it would lead to sweeping revolutionary changes across office jobs. She remembered a few years ago when someone talked her into fiddling with NFTs. That was a bad experience, leading to embarrassment and probably why no one bothered to approach her about AI until now.

"Tell me more about this AI stuff, Mr. Alexander."

"What kind of AI are you interested in?"

She turned around to face him, revealing her busty crop top. This was a subtle test to see if he could maintain eye contact. Kyle didn't take an instant glance at her chest.

"I don't know much at all about AI. I have heard some things, but no one has taken the time to explain any of it to me, so now you have the chance to sell me on it."

"Well, AI isn't just one thing. It can be used for a lot of cool stuff. It's still somewhat new at the moment, but we've seen leaps of improvement in the past ten months alone. I think it could replace Photoshop in the future."

"AI is used for editing pictures?"

He nodded.

"Editing and enhancements. It still needs a fair bit of work. You have to do prompts and all this stuff. When it's left to think for itself, the results aren't good. This is just editing stuff. I don't know anything about using AI to run social media accounts or stuff like that. I've only used it for editing purposes."

His explanation made Kara think for a moment. She sat back down in her chair, looking away from his face. Kyle could see she was in deep thought, probably considering the cheaper costs with one person to run things opposed to how many people she had on staff prior.

"You seem to know a fair bit about AI. That knowledge will come in handy later. Tell me about your experience editing videos."

"I have two apps for that. I can make stuff for your social media pages with the correct width and size for the frames. I can do various effects, post processing and all that stuff. Just know I'm not a cinematographer. I'll need videos to edit if that's what you need."

"Do you know anyone who works in cinematography?"

Kyle stopped for a moment, then a smile ran on his face as he lightly chuckled.

"No, but I know a photographer in Miami. He's really good."

"So you do have some friends outside of L.A. then."

He nodded again, this time with a smile. Kyle went on, speaking again.

"I've been a big fan of yours for a long time. I think I started following you ten years ago. Back then, I was expecting you to be in Sports Illustrated or something."

Blushing at his words, Kara flashed a smile with her pearly, white teeth.

"If you've been following me this long, I think you know I came close."

"Oh yeah, I remember when you tried out. I'm still bitter about it."

"No reason to be. I don't need a magazine like that to get my name out there. I made it without their help."

"I suppose you're right, it's a dead business now. Their glory days are long gone."

As he spoke, Kara moved her hands to the front of her top to fiddle with the front button. She made sure Kyle's eyes were focused on her chest when she popped the button loose. Kara got what she wanted when she saw his eyes widen at the sight of her cleavage. He blinked a few times before shifting his sight back to her face.

"Sorry, it's a little hot in here."

"This is your house, so no need to apologize. I'm just a guest."

"You won't be a guest after the end of this interview."

"I take it that you want to hire me then?"

Standing up, Kara nodded. She was unable to hold back the smile on her face.

"Yes, I want to bring you on board, Kyle. I hope you don't mind me calling you that. Let's drop the Mr. and Mrs. when speaking to each other. I have a good feeling about you when it comes to making friends."

"You know that line in Casablanca? I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship."

Laughing at his gesture, Kara felt that he was flirting with her. If he had truly followed her for so many years, she had to wonder if he had feelings for her. They had yet to discuss what his salary would be, yet Kara felt this was a dream opportunity for him. Kyle didn't seem like other men who were trying to work their way up the ladder of prestige in the industry. This job wouldn't be offering any of the connections required for a corporate career. Something about how Kyle handled himself told Kara that he was trying to get away from office work. He had given her a strong first impression that made her walk around the desk, ready to shake the man's hand. She extended her left hand out to him. Kyle got up from his chair, taking her hand and shaking it gently.

"We still need to talk about how much money I'll be paying you per week. That's the last thing on the menu."

"Right, I kinda forgot about that."

Standing inches apart now, Kara wanted to see if his eyes would drift to her cleavage again now that she was close. Kyle still managed to maintain a level of eye contact that impressed her.

"I was thinking of making you the offer of five grand per week."

"That's not a bad offer by any means. That's almost double what I was getting paid per week at my last job."

"Do you prefer Thursday or Friday to be payday?"

"Friday is better. I like to start the weekend with a good paycheck, if you know what I mean."

"I know exactly what you mean, Kyle. You'll have to let me know your bank details so I can make the deposits every Friday. Since today is Monday, when do you think you can start work for me?"

"I can start tomorrow. I don't have an office or anything like that. I use three laptops. I can go home right now and get things prepared."

"Three laptops?"

With a nod, he replied.

"Yeah. One is solely for a backup. I play games on another that has a better graphics card. I guess you could say that's the fun computer. My main is for work. I keep all of them in a black backpack, that way, I can work from wherever. It doesn't matter if I'm home or in a hotel room. You could even let me set up a room in this house."

"Oh, I think you would like me to watch you work."

Kara's words made him blush. That was just what she wanted to see while standing close to him. She stepped away, allowing him to see her backside in the leather pants. The interview proved to be a success. She felt confident about Kyle and now wanted to test him. After a few seconds to consider what his first job should be, Kara turned around and spoke.

"Let's start with something fun tomorrow. I'm going to email you some pictures to edit. That will be your first assignment."

"That should be fun indeed. Anything specific you want done?"

"No, that's your choice. Do you think you can surprise a girl with something nice?"

"Yeah, I think I know what to do."

"Good! I like surprises. I'll let you know if it makes me smile. That's how you'll know I liked it."

2 DAYS LATER

Rays of sunlight created lines across the white walls in the bedroom. A small crack at the top of the black curtains had become a minor annoyance for Kyle since it kept going undone from the power of a fan blowing close by on the highest setting. The hot summer days in Florida left a memory for him that he could never forget. A motorized fan was always running in his bedroom due to that and to have some noise in the background. When the apartment was quiet, any little sound would alert him. Across from his bed was a small desk. His main laptop was open in the center. Off to the left side was a metal cup. The other two laptops were close by on a table plugged into a charger connected to the wall. All the laptops had a shiny, metallic silver front. Kyle applied stickers to differentiate them. His main computer had a KC Chiefs logo sticker on the front.

The red coloring in the sticker had faded into a lighter hue due to exposure to sunlight. His gaming laptop was decorated with stickers of the Rebel Alliance and Empire symbols from the Star Wars films. Each laptop had the same black keyboard and a plug in for a mouse. The reflection of his eyes could be seen across the bright screen thanks to the dark mode he used on the browser. He finished editing a slideshow of Kara's photos that she wanted edited. Kyle was inspired by a recent post from his photography friend who utilized black and white imagery to bring out the finer details of the human body. This led him to take one of Kara's photos and blend it in black and white with some subtle lighting to reveal her muscles and the features of her deep cleavage in a bikini top. For the other photos, he ran them through a vintage film reel filter and edited the photos to appear as if they came off an old Hollywood reel.

Kara was quick to text him with praise, citing that her jaw dropped instead of the mere smile she alluded to yesterday. His first day working at home went well. Kyle shifted his focus to her social media accounts, looking for ways he could maximize outreach with her photos. Before he made any decision, he texted Kara to see if she was free. That led to a phone call where they discussed his next moves. Kara informed Kyle that she had photos waiting to be published online at specific dates. Kyle suggested they create a calendar where he could post teasers on Instagram and TikTok to drive engagement with her posts. She agreed, allowing him to make short, edited videos to place in her Instagram stories. He noticed how she was close to two million total followers on Instagram. It was a personal quest to push the number over the mark. If Kyle could help achieve that goal, he felt good about marketing measures online.

Working for her gave him a renewed sense of purpose in life. The entire reason Kyle traveled to America and obtained dual citizenship was to earn more money. He had hopes of settling down with a family in his previous relationship. It all went downhill around the time of the pandemic. He still had bad memories of the lockdown period five years after it happened. No job was guaranteed after that terrible year. Had it not been for landing this dream opportunity, he would've probably ended up back in Germany by summertime. Not many men could say they were hired to work for a woman they fantasized about. Kyle had his sole friend in Miami, with whom he played games online. Axel was living good now that he was finally able to use his talents in photography with a woman who appreciated the value he had to offer. Witnessing someone else's life turn around gave him good hope for the future with Kara.
