Los Angeles, California
Two thuds echoed in the small bathroom, followed by the sound of breathing. The fresh scent of lemon perfume left a strong impression in the air. It was from a boutique designer brand that sent a sample bottle that was now sitting on the counter, directly below a small, oval shaped mirror. Kara Del Toro studied her reflection, making sure that her makeup had been applied perfectly. Shining gold streaks were visible in her long locks of brunette hair. This dark blonde look was another recent choice to go with her look. Below her face was a creamy, beige crop top hiding her busty chest. Kara allowed a friend to talk her into trying a brown colored top to go with a black leather outfit. The straps covered her shoulders with only four buttons to contain her breasts. She wanted to give the impression that the outfit was a size too small. Below her chest was a pair of leather pants to match the jacket hanging on a coat rack.
Life changed for most people in their thirties. Kara was coming to terms with this fact now at thirty-one and looking to the future. She had enjoyed a successful career in fashion modeling despite not reaching the heights she once dreamed of. Ten years had passed since she first broke into the industry. Kara had given up on the idea of becoming a household name like other models from the time frame of when she entered. The struggle she had with trying to reach success gave her a different mindset. Nothing was ever guaranteed, let alone to be taken for granted. She wasn't an actress or a social influencer. Kara took pride in being known as a professional model first and foremost. While she was happy to accept deals from brands to be modeled on her social media profiles, Kara refused to consider herself to be an influencer.
Throughout the years, she collected names of various associates. Agents, photographers, PR consultants, and the like. All of them worked a different gear in the industry. She had the experience on her side at this point to branch out on her own. For the past three years, the thought had been in the back of her mind. Kara saw what other models were doing online and wanted a piece of that action. Some were able to turn their careers into a more profitable venture by utilizing the online world. By this point in her life, Kara was looking for some kind of balance between the two. She had gone through multiple agents who served her right by opening pathways into the industry. Now she had a moment to consider her name online and the future going forward. Kara had big plans for launching her own company, but the time wasn't set. She still needed some help figuring out where to go with specific fashion brands.
Today's interview was related to that question. Going into 2025, Kara put out word that she needed a new social media manager. It was a bold decision to hire someone from outside her inner circle of friends and previous managers, but Kara felt the need to go this route. She placed advertisements online for this new job. All of them were processed through her agent, whom she allowed to help in this search of strangers. It was his duty to do background checks and all the legal means necessary to filter out any potential troublesome individuals. If Kara had a good first impression on someone, she preferred to do the interview alone in her villa in the hills. The luxury home served as a base of operations when she wasn't traveling to do photoshoots. Kara converted one of the rooms downstairs into a personal office. She saw the opportunity to welcome her new social media manager into her world by conducting the interview alone in her house.
Through the search, Kara settled on a thirty-three year old man with the name Kyle Alexander. He was from Germany with dual citizenship going back to 2018. His resume proved interesting with various tech companies and social media management both in Germany and the United States. He had no previous history with managing social media accounts for other models. That was something that made Kara feel good about this man. When she was ready to interview him, she invited Kyle to her mansion. They arranged a meeting where her bodyguard was required to pick him up in one of Kara's vintage cars. She thought a ride in her red 1980 Ford Thunderbird might give Kyle a good first impression. It wasn't as fancy as some of the cars she knew people outside of Hollywood owned, but it was still a prized possession. Kara acquired the car as a gift from a family member who suggested it would be well suited as a work car.
Kara didn't greet Kyle when he arrived. She left her bodyguard to offer him a drink while she fixed her hair and made sure that her outfit was perfect. This interview would serve as a test outside of work related subjects. Kara took one last glance at her cleavage, thinking to herself if he would be able to focus on her face and not the display below. The leather pants were high-waisted with the zipper tucked at the same level as her belly button. Kara grabbed the leather jacket and slipped her left arm inside first. Once she had it on, she glanced down at the zipper and decided not to fasten it. Her black stilettos made a ticking noise as she stepped across the white tiles of the bathroom. That sound would become a louder click and clack as she left the room and stepped across the stone, square tiles leading into her office behind a white door. She gripped the knob, slowly turning it, and walked in.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Alexander."
As she spoke, he smiled from his chair. Kyle was dressed in a white collared shirt and black slacks. With a black jacket, it would've made the perfect office uniform for his slightly overweight frame. His face was almost clean apart from the five o'clock shadow. The light shining from the windows across the room brightened the chestnut brown locks of his short, trimmed hair. His eyes were brown, similar to her own. Across the room was a row of reflections in oval shapes with a single line down the middle from the row of three windows. A handsome man sitting in my office, Kara quietly thought to herself.
"Hi, Miss Del Toro. It's an honor to be here today."
Moving towards her desk, Kara broke eye contact to look where her black leather chair was. She turned it so she could sit down. Atop her desk sat some white papers underneath a closed laptop. On the right side sat an empty white tumbler cup on a drink coaster. Kara sat down and smiled at Kyle as she placed her elbows on the glossy, black marble surface.
"So how should we start this? I guess I can ask you where you're from. I saw that you're from Germany."
"Yes, I'm from Kleve. It's on the Dutch border if you're curious."
"That's interesting. I've never had anyone on my team from Germany before."
"Anyone before me who isn't from America?"
She nodded.
"Yes, I had an agent from England about seven years ago. So do you work locally?"
"What do you mean?"
"Do you live in this city?"
Kyle shook his head before answering.
"I wouldn't necessarily say I live in L.A. I worked in Miami before coming out here for my last job."
"So you lived there instead?"
"Yes. I know the city well too."
A smile ran across Kara's face as she leaned back in the chair. Any mention of Miami brought back memories of good times.
"That's nice. I've always liked spending time in Miami myself. So tell me, how did you find the ads I put out for this job? Where do you follow me online?"
"Instagram is the main one. But I have you on TikTok, Snapchat, and YouTube as well."
Her lower lip fell for a brief moment. Kara was impressed by this level of dedication. A true fan was sitting across from her.
"Wow, that's all bases covered."
Kyle nodded in silence.
"I must say, I'm quite impressed. I thought you may have heard about this job from someone that you used to work for. That led me to think we know some of the same people."
"I don't have any friends in this town if that's what you're wondering. I usually just work and go home."
"You don't hit the bar for a beer after work?"
