"They want to buy the place for 7 million theals...."
Even considering the size of the property, it was an incredible sum, which Jev had been guessing would sell for slightly more than a million. BigBuy was intent on expanding into the area, ideally taking advantage of the planned expansion of the GemLifts, but they had encountered a fair amount of resistance from the locals. The paid security seemed like an overreaction, but maybe it had gotten more heated than Jev realized. Granddad's property was the first one to come up in a while which was large enough to host the warehouse-style shop, and the fact that the decision was to be made by someone without deep roots in the community seemed too good to be true. Jev hadn't even approached anyone about putting the property on the market, and yet it seemed that word had gotten around.
"They said they're willing to subdivide the property to allow you to own your tree. You'd be able to stay without problems... But you'd be living beside the parking lot."
Dione sat on the couch, breathing deeply. She fought against a rising tide of panic. Jev selling the property had always been a potential outcome, possibly to some sour old bastard who hated her, but the idea that everything here would be bulldozed for an ocean of asphalt had never been a factor in even her worst-case scenario.
Jev walked over to the side of the couch, where he sat beside her and took her by the hands, comfortingly.
"I don't think I'm going to take it."
Her eyes locked with his, disbelieving.
"I know it's only been a bit less than a week that I've been here, but for the first time in my life, I feel like there's potential for something better, you know? Maybe I'm gonna be a terrible farmer, I don't know. But I can still do
something
here. Back home if it's not a BigBuy corporate office job, then it's something equally soul-crushing. There's no way I could ever afford property like this on my own in Garnaca, even if I sell to BigBuy."
His gaze dropped, looking down at their hands together.
"And, I mean, it's been a week and I have
friends
here. Between you and Cyd β maybe we're not bound-at-the-hip soulbound buddies or anything, but I've made a closer bond with you two here this week than I have with anyone in Balisport since high school. I don't think I realised just how lonely I was."
He looked up at Dione and nodded back at the fridge. A sheaf of papers sat there, held onto the refrigerator with a magnet.
"I was going to tell you during our date tomorrow, but one of the places I stopped at today was Selrington, to visit the government offices there. I'm going to start the immigration process."
There was a pregnant pause as Dione absorbed the information he was giving her. Then there was a flurry of movement as her arms wrapped around his shoulders and she pressed her lips into his. Despite his surprise, he kissed her, savouring the gentle softness of her lips pressing into his, the faraway smell of pine on her breath.
Her eyes flicked open as though she suddenly realised what she was doing. She withdrew from the kiss, apologizing. Jev grabbed her behind the neck and drew her back, kissing her deeper and more intensely as she melted into his arms. She felt good moulded against him, and he felt her tongue tentatively probing against his lips. His mouth parted to grant her access and he met the gentle caress of her tongue with his own. A part of him wanted to slip the shoulder of her dress off, to press on aggressively, but he kept it in check. She needed to set the pace she was comfortable with so that he didn't accidentally intimidate or scare her off.
They made out like this for a few moments before Dione pulled away and rested her head against his chest.
"I mean, that's only if you want me to stick around, of course."
She reached over and slapped him gently on his far shoulder, nestling her head further into his chest in response.
It suddenly struck him how much would need to be done. He needed to transfer or cancel the lease for the apartment back home, go through the immigration process β part of which meant learning the language properly, getting the property ready, learning farming... It was almost too much to consider. As he started to create the "to-do" list in his head, Dione piped up.
"Oh, yeah, Cyd wanted me to remind you the pack will be here this weekend, and to be ready 'cause they'll be here early."
"How early is 'early'?"
She shrugged.
"Probably 6, 7-ish."
"In the
morning
?"
"Welcome to the life of a farmer, I guess."
He sighed.
"Well, I grabbed a big box of frozen burgers and some buns while I was out today, so we'll throw them on the barbeque and hopefully that will take care of food."
She sat up and looked at him very earnestly.
"Oh, you believe me, when the pack gets together you will not have to worry about food."
A loud creaking came from outside as a heavy form walked onto the front porch. The door creaked open and Cydwen's wolven head poked in.
"I'm boβ hey, look at you two cuddle bugs!"
Dione immediately sat up, scooting away from Jev to a respectable distance.
"What's up, Cyd?"
Cydwen seemed to battle internally over whether to interrupt them or not, but eventually apparently decided that the moment had passed as she walked into the cabin. Her thick claws clacked against the wood floor and she came over to the third cushion on the couch and collapsed into it. Her thick reddish-brown fur was more than enough covering for the sake of her modesty, as she wore no clothing.
"I'm bored. I tried to do some more work, but I'm too clumsy like this."
Jev raised an eyebrow.
"What, no more random tourists for you to waylay in the dark?"
"I don't remember you complaining..."
"Maybe I didn't want you to rip my face off?"
