Both ships broke through the atmosphere of Veldhern, making a beeline for the station up in orbit. The shuttle headed straight for the military docks, while the
Darkstrider
moved to its assigned berth. They had already been granted clearance to dock, which was something as far as the crew was concerned. Several of them looked back and forth at each other with worry.
"Was it really necessary to tell them who we really were, Alex?" Kasumi questioned.
"Considering that Shazza's disguise matrix shorted out, I figured the truth was necessary. A version of it at least," Alex told her.
"I have to agree with Kas. What happened was unfortunate, but coming up with a lie would have been preferable," Korsa agreed.
"We will need to cultivate allies outside of the Artucian and will need to find those who have potential to be allies," Alex explained.
"He makes a point," Inari replied, finishing up with the docking procedure. "I have heard of Ana Williams, back when I was still with the Federation. She was known as a hardass, but a fair hardass and one hell of a tactician. It explains why she made it to commodore while still so young."
"You think we can trust her?" Priya wondered.
"To an extent. I am unsure where her loyalties lie, but if I'm right, she would be a powerful ally to have in our corner. Hell, maybe if tabled right, she could well come over to our side," Inari laughed.
"Interesting thought, but let's shelve that for now. We have a debrief to attend and it's best not to keep them waiting," Kasumi reminded everyone.
"Does that mean us too?" Luminia asked, indicating herself, Tahral and Aesha.
"We keep no one out of the loop, Lumi. You better come with us, if for nothing else, to help us with explaining things," Inari told her.
"All right," she agreed, with the other two Artucian nodding along.
"With that said... Jaesa, Stanley, you have the ship. Deploy Sentries to patrol the
Darkstrider
and keep watch. Lord only knows what will happen now," Alex stated.
"Acknowledged, sir. Carrying out your orders," Stanley told them as the crew debarked the ship. As they walked off, the crew was surprised to find Williams' aide there, waiting for them.
"Hello... Maia, was it?" Inari asked.
"Commander Maia O'Toole, Captain Sunara. If you'll follow me please, the commodores are waiting for us," she replied in a chipper voice.
Inari caught the ghost of a smirk, and the commander's roving eyes told her all she needed to know about Maia's state of mind. Priya caught the looks as well and stared daggers at the woman's back. Inari almost guffawed, but kept a lid on it as she watched her lover seethe. It was cute, watching her woman get jealous, but she assuaged Priya's scowl with a few whispered words.
"She can look all she likes, but you're the only one who gets to touch me and make me scream," Inari breathed into her lover's ear. Priya breathed out happily, her anger dissipating, and she fanned herself gently, getting a little hot under the collar.
Commander O'Toole kept a brisk pace, which was no trouble for the taller members of the crew. She led them along to administrative offices as had the Lt. Commander had before. Only this time, she led the crew in a different direction, one which saw less foot traffic.
They kept their guard up, mindful of any treachery, but so far, saw no sign of it. Maia then stopped at a pair of double doors, stepping up to security console. She placed her hand on a scanner and looked right at it; the machine scanning her hand and eyes simultaneously. A green accept prompt lit the screen and a clicking thunk emanated from the doors.
"The way is open. If you will all please enter," the commander ushered them.
Seeing how they had little choice in the matter, the crew pushed past the doors and walked into the room. It was decorated much like any ordinary board room, but much simpler than the one they were in earlier. Inside waited Williams, Saubath, Dohbalan, their aides, minus Maia and another man they hadn't met before.
He was a tall and reedy sort, but with a youthful and jovial look about him. Though thin, he worked out, and he had some muscle to show for it. He wasn't quite as brawny or powerful as Alex, but had a look that said he could take care of himself. He wore a small goatee and had a small smile on his face. He stood close to Commodore Williams and Inari guessed that he was important to the woman.
"Welcome, crew members of the
Darkstrider
! Please be seated!" Williams told the crew.
"Is this room secure?" Alex asked, eyes darting to the walls.
"It is. There are no recording devices present in this room, and it was designed that way. Though information is important, the UCW saw the necessity to create a place here on the station that was... private. There are some situations that require secrecy, and this is one of them. Oh, and miss Shazza? You can go ahead and remove that disguise matrix, if you wish," Williams informed them.
Shazza smiled, before looking up at Alex, who nodded his assent. Shazza then tapped at the matrix on her upper breast and deactivated the device. Both Dohbalan and Saubath looked a bit unnerved by her proper form, as did the aides. But the new man there didn't seem fazed or surprised, and if he was, he gave no indication.
"So... Commodore Tomisic, why don't you start from the beginning?" Saubath asked, seating himself.
"Well, I think it's best if Commander Sunara speaks her piece first. It was because of her and the original
Darkstrider
crew that we were found in the first place," Alex informed them.
Inari spoke about how they had recently picked up the bounty on Rat Faced Mike. She went on about how their recon job went south and were forced to flee. How they made a blind jump into Wild Space, which is how they locate the
Perseus
. She told her part of the story, up until their capture by Kasumi, which is where Alex picked it up.
He recounted the events that followed afterwards. Shazza's capture, the crash on Talemkha, the battle that followed, their meeting with the Artucian, all of it. The assembled group were a captive audience, hanging on Alex's every word. Both Williams and Saubath were intrigued at the mention of the old Human Systems Alliance and what it had become.
Alex was careful in telling the story, leaving out the more sensitive bits about the energy they used. Though they had a recording of Shazza using the Aether, it was clear that it wasn't a recent occurrence. They had seen Shazza use it, but not the other members of the crew. As far as Alex was concerned, there was no point in showing all their cards just yet.
"That is quite the tale! If it turns out to be true," Dohbalan replied.
"I doubt they're lying to us. Do you not remember the
Darkstrider
tearing that destroyer a new one?" Saubath growled.
"Point taken! If I may ask a question... Commodore Tomisic?" Dohbalan wondered.
"Go ahead."
"If you have such a massive ship full of advanced technologies, then why leave it in the Talemkha system? Why not bring it with you?" the administrator asked.
"Several hundred years of atrophy has brought the hyperdrive down to where it is little more than a paperweight. We have the tools to bring it back to functionality, but we lack the raw materials to do so," Alex explained.
"If you would humor me, maybe we could be of assistance. If you were to give us the co-ordinates for the Talemkha system, we could help you in effecting repairs to the
Perseus
," Saubath offered.
