As a level 28 wizard, Edwin knew he could safely travel at night. There weren't high level monsters anywhere nearby, and the weaker ones that sometimes wandered close to the road at night were free experience points. He kept the purple crystal orb at the end of his wooden staff lit up with a simple Light spell, just so he could see the road ahead, maybe attract some curious monsters, and reassure any other travellers that it was just an unthreatening, maybe slightly shorter than average human wizard in some ordinary blue robes and a big hat.
With only 35 experience points left until level 29, just one random hostile monster or bandit or whatever would do the trick. He couldn't help but itch for a fight. There were so many good spells that he would have the opportunity to learn then, including Lesser Invisibility. As he walked down the gravel road in the dark, he wondered what kind of hijinks he could get up to with that...
Just before he reached the dense patch of woods just outside of town, he saw a shape in a ditch. Brightening the light on his staff with a simple wave, he illuminated it and saw... A girl? Actually, a catgirl. Memories of the last few times he had to save someone flooded in.
"Are you okay?" he said as he rushed closer, dropping his staff on the ground, its light still illuminating the area. Wearing a plain beige dress and some ordinary brown shoes, this white-haired catgirl was almost face down in the dirt. Although she didn't look wounded, she wasn't answering...
He rolled her over and got a closer look. She very faintly stirred, relief flooding through him as her head turned slightly and a little grumble escaped her lips; at least she was alive. If she weren't asleep in a bad way, she'd be so cute: busty, eyes closed, lips open just enough to be a little bit of a tease, the fuzzy ears on top of her head to top off her long hair that was still perfect even though she was passed out in a...
Edwin tried to shake her awake, resuming her stirring. She let out a groaning meow as one of her eyes tried to flutter open.
"Are you okay?" he asked again, shaking her again.
"Five more minut... hmhmng," she mumbled out.
"Wake up!" he said.
She gained awareness more quickly, her cat ears stiffening as she seemed to realize she wasn't in a bedroom or wherever it was catgirls liked to sleep.
"Oh... oh, where am I?" she said, still groggy. Her voice was sweet and quiet. She wiped her eyes as she slowly tried to get up; he reached out to help her, and seeming confused at first, it took her a moment to accept his help. Pulling gently upward on her soft hand, he helped her stand up. She was about his height, and scanning her body, her dress was somehow less dirty than it ought to have been given the circumstances.
"I found you in this ditch," Edwin said. "Are you okay?"
"Oh... I don't know, maybe I fell or something? I can't remember..."
"Hold still for a second. I'm going to cast a Scan spell to see if there's anything wrong..."
Edwin cast the spell, and he got a basic overview of her. Level 3 catgirl, missing a few hit points, no status effects. Her highest stat was luck, but that was all the spell told him.
"Huh? Oh, you're a wizard... Am I okay? I dunno what happened..."
"You're fine," he said. "Just a little hurt. What's the last thing you remember?"
She rubbed her head. "I was maybe... Something hit me in the head and I passed out. Do you see my backpack anywhere? I'm still dizzy... At least my head doesn't hurt all that much."
Edwin looked around, knowing it wasn't there. He took the opportunity to pick up his staff.
"Sorry. I think someone hit you in the back of the head and took it."
"Aww... At least it didn't have much inside. I'm going to the capital for the fireworks festival, and I was going to... oh, that's not that important."
He was curious, but decided not to probe for now. "Mhm. Went there once, pretty good. Have you ever been? The snacks are..." He caught himself getting off topic. "Nevermind. I want to make sure you get to town safely. I assume you were headed North; that's where I was headed, and town's not that far away."
"Uhhh... Yeah!" She seemed nervous. "Actually... I had some gold with me and I was going to get an inn room, but unless that bandit or whatever left some of it behind, I don't think I'll be staying at an inn anytime soon. Do you know anywhere I can stay for just the night?"
Edwin figured it was worth helping a random cute catgirl in need. "The capital's three days away, right? You need this more than me, so..."
As he got out his coin pouch and fished around inside, she seemed nervous.
"Oh! There's no need for that, I can't take money... I feel really bad about taking money without doing anything in return. I couldn't live with myself if I did, I hate stealing..." She held up her hands as if she were begging him not to give her anything.
"It's fine," he said, starting to take out a nice stack of coins. "Wizards get a lot of gold anyway."
"Wait, if you're fine with it... Can I stay with you tonight instead?"
"Huh?"
"You know, at your place... If that's okay."
Edwin didn't really see how that was different, but if she was in need and couldn't take money, then that was also fine. He put the coins back in the pouch and stowed it away.
"I mean... Sure, if you really want."
"Yippee!" she said. "Thank you so much!" She rushed in closer for a hug; not expecting it, his fight or flight instincts got scared for a moment, but he quickly calmed down. It was just a hug. He let it happen, unsure how to respond at first, then he reluctantly and gently put his arms around her.
"It's going to be alright," he said, slowly becoming aware of how much she was pressing her body against his. He had been trying to ignore her chest, but with it touching his...
Eventually, she pulled away, leaving him feeling a little warm inside.
"You can lead the way," she said. "Oh, and I'm Saffron! That's my name. Mhm."
"Edwin, at your service," he said. "It's not far. Let's go, Saffron."
"Sure thing!"

She walked alongside him, and they chatted together on the way back. The air was cool, and even though Edwin's robes were reasonably warm, he was still looking forward to being in his house, where he could warm up the air with a little magic and be as cozy as he liked. And if Saffron was cold, she wasn't showing it.
"So," Saffron said, "You live there all alone?"
