"Hello the camp!" I called out while remaining low. Never knew if a nervous trigger finger might fire first and ask questions later.

"Come on in Major, hell of a show out there." Jackson called back as I walked into the large area. They were in an old hay field with secure fencing keeping them protected from the zombies. I walked up and shook Jacksons hand and smiled a bit.

"Pretty sure the finale was your doing, eh?" I replied and he chuckled.

"Yeah we spotted them coming and going from the house earlier. I didn't think you could use the distraction so we took care of it." he explained and I nodded. I looked at the roadway and nodded towards it.

"Your tail still a few days out?" I asked him and he nodded.

"Got themselves a fair enough army, what they lack in ability they make up for in numbers." he explained and I nodded a bit.

"You all ready to move out and come inside and enjoy a real bed for a change?" I asked him and he laughed and nodded.

"Been a while sense I had to rough it, not saying I enjoyed it." he replied laughing even as other agreements were made.

"Dakota here, prepare rooms for roughly a hundred plus." I called in. Sam would send his people to work and my family would keep track of movements to clear the road ways as we walked to the large gate.

"Thanks Major, we owe you big time for this." Jackson said smiling. I kept a look out while everyone picked up their things and we headed out. After nearly an hour we arrived at the gate and watched as it opened up. Once inside the gate shut and locked into place.

"Damn, I knew you all had been busy, but I never imagined anything like this." Jackson said as he looked around slowly.

"Tell me how ya really feel.." I said jokingly.

"I should have built the base like this, prepared to defend against zombies and against raiders. All I did was save us from the monsters, not even considering the worst of them might be human." he admitted and I nodded slowly.

"For anyone hungry, the kitchen is open, just remember to pick up after yourself." I said and smiled.

"We have enough rooms for everyone, and enough beds as well as hot showers and baths for those who need them and fresh clothes as well. The building over there.." I pointed off to the large Cement and Concrete block constructed building, "That has toiletries, clothes and pretty much anything else you might need. All weapons are checked in over by the gate, and I do mean all weapons. We do not allow anything longer then a pocket knife to be carried." I explained to them all as they were listening while I spoke to Jackson.

"What about you and the sword?" a voice called out.

"You are in my Home and you will abide by my rules or you may leave and continue your journey and we will wish you safe travels and luck. But if you stay, you will be assigned work based on your skills, if you do not work, you do not eat or have a room of your own. I won't have some welfare state on our hands." I said as I looked them over.

"Some of us can't work do to injuries." another called out.

"Don't mean you can't stand watch in a guard tower and watch for possible attack from either zombies or raiders." I called back.

"Listen I ain't forcing anyone to work, but on the flip side you can't force us to support your lazy ass either." I explained and shrugged, "Choice is yours, you get a free ride today to rest up from your journey, come tomorrow you decide if the journey ends here or if you should continue on."

"He's not doing anything we weren't doing in our old base, so knock it off." Jackson shouted out and quieting his people. Sam was walking up quickly along with several other of his people.

"Okay everyone, Sam and his people will assign you rooms, show you where everything is and after that I suggest you get some rest." I called out and walked with a few over to the gate and handed in the handgun and rifle. Jackson had been watching and began handing in his own weapons along with the rest of his people.

"General, I suggest if you know anyone prone to hiding weapons, you get them to give them up, if Dakota or anyone else spots a weapon on them. They will get five minutes to grab their stuff, pick up any weapons they did check in and then escorted out the gate. He lets no one carry and it's mainly because he says people under pressure tend to snap at the wrong time." Sam explained to Jackson.

General Jackson spent the next half hour forcing everyone to give up their weapons.

"Geezus that was like disarming some third world nations." Jackson admitted as he took a seat across the fire from me and I laughed a bit. He had everyone inside taking time out to clean up, eat and rest.

"So what's the plan?" Jackson asked as Torie and Maria along with Sam all sat around the small fire. Sam had seen us all gathering and he wanted to know what was happening as well.

"Plan's simple really, most of your men, General, are trained with weapons. I hazard to guess they didn't get the strict Military training we got, but they did learn from someone who did." I said and he nodded and smiled.

"You always did pay attention to the details, continue please." Jackson said in his way of praise.

"Problem is the Civilians still out number the trained fighters by quite a bit. Most of Sam's people never fired a shot in anger in their lives before the zombies came." I reported and Sam nodded in agreement.

"Only time we fired a shot in anger was when some rabbit made it to their hole before we got in a second shot." Sam admitted and had everyone giggling or chuckling lightly.

"So we need the Civilians who have no warfare training to move to the Basement and wait it out." I said and Sam started to say something and I held up my hand.

"The Basement has an escape route that will take them two miles east and from the exit they can continue east to the farms. The two houses and several barns are actually behind a stand of trees and from the road you never see any of the farms and ranches that are located there. It was another reason to put the cattle out there instead of leaving them in plain sight here in town." I explained and he nodded.

"Now for the rest who want to fight and can fight, I want Sam's people paired up with your people General. Even if all they are doing is running for resupply of ammo or medical staff. We need them if we are going to hold this place from a siege. The fact is we have all the food locked up within a fifty mile radius, we'll last longer then they will if they go for the siege tactics. If they pull an all out assault, again we have the advantage of higher ground from on top of the walls." I explained while they listened.

"We also have claymores set around in the abandoned cars along the streets, the ones most likely to be traveled based on their width and how clear they are of zombies." I said while pulling out a map of the City. Everyone moved closer to have a look.

"Ten yards from the base of the walls, we have land mines and they are spaced out randomly, there are no maps to show placement so don't get lost in the middle of them." I stated and Sam's eyes widened a bit.

"Now you know why I run next to the foot of the wall instead of away from it." I said and he nodded with a grin.

"Now on these main roads, we set up twenty plus claymores hidden within objects that would also add to the shrapnel flying in every direction. Again stay down when these go off as a few are well within range of dropping stuff into the Stronghold here, another reason for the Civilians to stay under cover." I explained and everyone nodded.

"We have the four corners over lapping with missile defenses and twin 50 caliber machine guns mounted at every look out tower and enough ammo to make it sound like World War Three just started. At the top the outside of the wall helps to give good concealment against return fire while still affording a good vantage point. And as a Salute to the General we have murder holes placed every few yards that we can uncover for a nasty surprise on those who make it to the base of the wall. Motion sensors also let us know if someone has gotten too close, the sensors only react to a body mass like a large dog. Anything smaller and it's a none issue, cameras will be monitored twenty four seven, I want shifts of every four hours, I do not want people falling a sleep out of boredom while on duty." I explained further and the General smiled a bit.

"Wish you had been my CO when I was younger, some of them eight hour shifts were murder." Jackson admitted and I laughed lightly.

"Well for us, we had different training, different rules. Here we have people with no real training to speak of and the rules don't count for much." I replied and he shrugged but agreed at the same time.

"By now the enemy knows their people are most likely dead sense they have not reported in by now. They may just figure a late report, but in a few more hours they will know something went badly for them. During that time, Maria and I will head out to scout them for a bit, with them being roughly two days behind, we'll head out and catch them at night. See how they move, their defenses and maybe even lead a few zombies to them and see how they respond." I told them and watched as their faces went through a wide range of emotions.

"While I am gone, Jackson, Sam and Torie will maintain order and control over operations. I want this camp to continue as if we are not expecting anything. We need to resupply, we need more ammo reloaded and ready when needed. When Maria and I return, we will update everyone on everything we have seen. And I will want your reports as to how things went here and if there is trouble, I want to know how it was dealt with and if anyone got banished." I stated while looking each of them in the eye. They all nodded in agreement.

"Sam, you and the General need to find common ground, for one I think the best common ground is the survival of our people and this Stronghold. Everything else can be worked out over drinks." I stated with a grin as they both laughed and nodded.

"Like you and I did?" The General asked. I gave him a smirk.

"At least I didn't wake up tangled up in legs and arms in that Hotel, only to find out one of them was..." I started saying and his eyes shot wide.

"Now, now, no need to rehash old memories." he said quickly and I started laughing as did everyone else.

"One of them was what?" Torie asked with a grin.

"One of the young Ladies, Grandmother. The General had somehow convinced her that it was all completely respectful, in no time she joined them in bed." I answered while everyone started laughing.

"I'm going to bed now that you have completely embarrassed me, how you never did anything like that while on leave I will never know." The General admitted.

"Who said I didn't, I just never got caught with my pants down or over my head." I replied and his eyes shot open again.

"Do not ask.." he said pointing at Torie who was giving him a 'who me' look and then pointed at me, "And you keep it to yourself.." he grumbled and then stomped off towards the Casino while we all just laughed a bit. Sam also retired for the night and ran off to make sure Jackson knew where his room was.

"When do you plan to leave?" Torie asked slowly.

"Sun will be setting in about ten hours. I figure we leave this afternoon, been a long night and could use some rest before we start running off to find the enemy." I told her, Maria and Torie both nodded slowly. We headed back inside and up to our home in the Penthouse.

We both packed food and water on a light weight trailer using the harness system I had originally come up with, then we left after saying good bye to everyone. Charlie and Tami took it the hardest. I also reminded Charlie not to take advantage of Tami's faith in her, stand up for each other and have your own will, not follow others like some sheep.

Maria and I took off, for some reason I was still much faster then her even after all this time with the Cure in her system. When we had more time we would figure out why later, for now we kept running at her best speed. We did find them after running most of the night, they were camped out right on the highway, a couple large vehicles being pulled by several horses teamed together. Along with prisoner slaves doing most of the manual labor and guards keeping watch on the area.

"Now what?" Maria asked uncertainly. I grinned at her a bit and winked.

"Stay here, we're going to make it a little more rustic for them." I replied and we both hooked up our radios so we could hear each other. Then I slipped into the darkness.

"Damn you are good at that.." Maria whispered and I laughed softly. I slowly worked over to where the horses were tied up, sense Zombies don't mess with the animals, they never thought to put a guard on them. Walking up I untied all of the horses more then thirty of them and led them to Maria to hold on too.

"What am I suppose to do with them?" she asked and I shook my head.

"Nothing they will have loads on them soon enough just wait here for arrivals." I replied and she nodded. Then I moved back to the camp, carefully I opened each of the prison cages while the men and women watched me. I waved at them to follow and led them back to Maria and the horses. Even the women being used by the so called soldiers were woken up and made their way out of the camp.

"Okay who knows how to ride best?" I asked and a woman raised her hand.

"You ride lead and set the pace. Believe me we have gained at least another day with these fools having no one but themselves to move their wagons, and with no animals or slaves to pull for them it means they have to do it themselves." I told her and Maria and I helped them onto the horses. I handed the woman a spare walkie talkie and showed her the proper channel.

"When you get to Reno, just outside of Sparks is a rise over the City, make a call into General Jackson. Tell him that the Major sent you, he will know who you are speaking of. Tell him you are at his camp on the rise. He will send people out to lead you in on the safest route back to the stronghold. There is a small coral area, you can wait inside, it is strong enough to keep away the stray zombie." I explained to them and they nodded at each point.

"Do not run the horses at all, this Highway has no zombies, so save the horses and your strength. When the sun hits high Noon, find a shady spot with some sort of fencing and give the horses and yourselves time to rest." I explained and nodded before they took off riding down the side of the road.

"Now what?" Maria asked and I smiled again.

"Now, we have some real fun." I said and I pointed off to the opposite side of the camp.

"That way about a mile is a small town. Lead as many as you can get to follow you, but before getting here make sure to slip away. The heavy scent of humans will lead them the rest of the way. Over this way, "I pointed behind me, "There is another town, I will bring as many as will follow."

Maria nodded and sprinted for where she assumed the township was located, while I ran in the opposite direction. I found the township in no time, what I didn't expect to find, more then a thousand of the buggers milling about in the middle of town. I got their attention and led them back, I could already hear gun fire and full automatics going off. I picked up speed and darted away while the zombies continued on to the noise. Maria lay on a rise watching the mayhem and I joined her.

We saw the men had climbed on the two large vehicles, they would remain safe from getting bitten, the problem for them was that only about thirty or so could fit on the vehicles at a time, plus who ever had gotten inside the vehicles, I guessed each vehicle would be holding and carrying roughly fifty people total each. So if that was true, a hundred were safe from the zombies. The rest was at least another hundred on the ground and had to fight for their lives.

Those on the ground were dying rather quickly, apparently they had been so focused on the initial attack, they were not covering their rear. It took several attacks before they realized they had more to their rear. They were not military trained by any means, they were simply bullies who happened to find an armory and sacked it for everything they could carry.

"What now?" Maria asked as the men on the ground all fell. Now those inside the vehicles and those on top just began to kill the Zombies at will. I sat back and sighed a bit.

"Well we know for a fact that they lost their means of hauling the vehicles, and with a loss of half their men, they won't have the numbers to just pull them themselves. We also know there are no more Strongholds along the way that they can ransack or build their numbers with." I mused while she listened.

"Chances are good they will simply gather what they can carry, and try to slip into our home as refugees." I stated and she nodded a bit.

"Lets hang out here, after they are gone we will check the vehicles before heading home." I said while she nodded in agreement. After a few hours of no one able to sleep, the men packed up and left the vehicles. It had been a heated debate until someone demanded who would pull the damn things. That seem to settle the argument. After they left we went and checked them out. They were simple troop transports that they had modified with steel plates and both had been outfitted with cannon and heavy ordinance which increased their weight by triple what they should weigh. After that we ran off and took a route that would parallel the highway and yet they would not be able to see us.

We did catch up with the once prisoners and their horses, told them we had taken a short cut which allowed us to meet them. We called into the stronghold and led everyone inside the large gate. They were amazed and happy to be free of those men. Then Sam, Jackson, Maria, Torie, Charlie, Tami and I all sat down at a table.

"I am curious why the kids are here for this." Jackson said as he looked over at Charlie and Tami.

I smiled as I looked over at them, "They are the future, they need to know what it takes to lead, we're not living forever and one day they have to be able to step up." I explained and he smiled as he nodded in understanding.

"Okay the men who are coming are well armed, now Maria and I were able to reduce their numbers by half, we also took away their prisoners and the horses they were using to pull along their transports. They had to leave behind their heavy hitters too because of their weight. It still leaves them a little over a hundred strong and with no armored vehicles, they will scatter in order to find cover for their attack instead of being massed behind and within those vehicles." I explained and they nodded while they listened.

"Fighting tactics?" Jackson asked.

"Think about your worst trained recruits, but who knew how to fire a weapon wildly and you will have knowledge of these men. They relied on heavy weapons, armor for protection and the fact that everyone else is not well armed in the least." I replied and he nodded as he considered it. I looked out the window and noted one of the new arrivals walking, his steps very deliberate as he moved between the buildings.

"Jackson what does that remind you of?" I asked him and he looked over and sighed slightly.

"Looks like someone mapping out our home for an attack. Usually for air raids or mortar attack." he muttered sourly. He touched the ear piece, "Simmons grab that piece of shit between the barracks and the ammo bay number four..." he paused while several men and women grabbed the new arrival, "Take that shit to holding and chain him to the wall after you strip him of everything." he added sourly.

"That is Steve, no one really trusted him, he never seemed to be wanting for food. Only reason we didn't actually suspect him is because he would get dragged away and when he returned, he was always sporting new bruises. After he was returned though, within hours or the next day, any secrets we had were well known by them." the woman who rode horses explained while looking at the monitor showing the man in chains within a cell.
