Sitting awkwardly around the old table in camp chairs, the group drank their tea in relative silence. Carter cleared his throat, "this is nice tea." He wasn't much of a tea drinker but was at a loss for what to say surrounded by his mate's siblings. He wanted the uncomfortable silence to cease.
"Mmhmm," Ramsey seconded.
"Jasmine, if I'm not mistaken?" Asked Eutus. He reached out and took his lover's hand. Izzy looked up from his cooling cup and nodded a small smile.
"Really boys?" Finn raised an eyebrow and pushed herself back onto two legs of the chair. "We're probably all going to die in the next couple of months. We could just move past whatever social awkwardness this is?" She took another drink from her cup, looking at each of the men in turn.
"Are you really so sure we're going to die?" Carter interjected in haste.
The Helmuts all began to chuckle, their eyes flicked between themselves.
Eutus gave them each a look that quieted them. "My darling, I do hope we won't die. But these creatures," a flourish of his hand to indicated Finn, Izzy and Ramsey, "are of the darkest stock. They do not see hope. Do not allow their gloomy view of our circumstances to cast doubt in your mind."
"If there is no hope, why are we here?" Carter asked.
Finn turned her attention to her mate. She allowed the chair to settle back down on the old wooden floor. "If you had to choose between doing nothing and dying or trying to do something and dying, which would you choose?"
"Well... to do something," Finn nodded as he continued, "but you told dad that we'd come home."
The other three looked at Finn. She cleared her throat, taking a large drink from her chipped cup. "No, love, I told Art that you'd come home."
"We aren't sure what the outcome will be but we are planning for as many of them as we can. You may be the keystone to our plan but the rest of it is ensuring you return home. You have a family and a pack that needs you," Izzy said, an attempt to help his sister.
"You know," Carter turned his attention to his mate, "you talk about hating the pomp and pageantry of enchanters but you're just as bad as they are. You never give me straight answers."
Finn puffed out her cheeks as his comment stung her. She released the air, allowing her cheeks to deflate. "I know. It's all been a lot," she admitted. "The issue is we don't have a lot of answers right now and the real problem is me."
"You?" He asked his mate.
"They're all dancing around the subject but the main issue, and the real reason we don't know if we're going to live, is that all of this depends on my ability to cast the spell they are working on."
"I don't understand. You're an enchanter, why is that the problem?"
"Because she stinks at magic," answered Eutus. Ramsey and Izadore both nodded.
"I've only managed to cast two spells..."
"In your entire life, you've only cast two spells?" Carter repeated, shocked.
