Chapter 25: That Feeling

Todd's group was larger by the time he left the tent. Most of the others in his network had arrived. Even Martin the Weasel, who Todd recognized as probably having a dangerous amount of information the survey was looking for... but who would recognize the ruse even faster than Todd had. The dozen or so there had waited for him to come out, allowing another person in front of them. He spoke in a soft voice. "Alright, can't talk specifics, but if you want to participate then lowball and vague up your estimates. It'll make sense once you get in there."

Corey the Raven crossed his arms. "I'll trust you on that, I guess, got some time before I can get into the booth. Looks like half the test is seeing whether you can be patient enough to get a chance to score at all."

He had a point. With every person taking five minutes in one of the five booths, the crowd of dozens was going nowhere fast. Song looked at the crowd, pulled out her phone, and tapped out some quick math on the calculator. "If there's a time limit, it's probably going to be the main challenge. Only about sixty students can get through these each hour, and there have to be two hundred out here." She closed her eyes and thought. "Todd, I don't see Catherine out here, so she's probably waiting for you at our suite or in hers, number 145. No sense waiting out here."

"Catherine?" Todd was confused for a moment.

"The healer I told you about earlier. I can see bruises and scrapes on you from the last couple of days, you need this."

"Oh. That makes sense. The rest of you need anything before I..."

"No," they all said in unison.

Jem crossed her arms and continued. "You need the healing. Go."

"I see I'm outnumbered. See you all later." With a wave, Todd headed back to the dormitory building. The walk back was fairly clear and peaceful. Most students were either at the League, still eating, or resting from the day. Not too many were out and about without aim. Todd thought he saw one of Bradley's friends, but the Human (or Human-looking, anyway) guy gave him a wide berth. In all, he made it back to the dorms without incident. The first place to check would be his own room, but there wasn't anyone there. Even May wasn't back yet. That meant he'd need to go into unexplored territory: other people's rooms. Back downstairs to the first floor after dropping by the bathroom, off to the left, was Suite 145.

He found himself uncharacteristically nervous. It wasn't exactly the first time he'd had sex with a random woman in this school for a direct benefit, a sentence that would have boggled his mind two weeks ago. Song had felt that this one was worth risking her ritual. He was touched, really, but figuring out how to make it up to her would have to wait. He shook his head. No point standing out here like there was any chance of the exchange not going as expected. Todd knocked.

"Come in!" The voice was a woman's, somewhat high but not severely so. Todd opened the door and went in.

A couple of things struck him. The first was that this place was scrupulously clean, though the walls showed a bit more damage than his own area. The furniture was otherwise the same, or at least close enough that it made no difference. The couch was pushed a bit further back to make room on the ground for a cushioned mat of some kind, and next to that mat stood a Human woman. "Catherine?"

"That's me, and you must be Todd." Catherine was a striking woman. Her hair was platinum blonde, only a shade or two off of white. Her eyes were ice blue, her skin pale and flawlessly smooth. Not a single wrinkle, scar, or zit to be seen anywhere. She was wearing a navy blue tee shirt and knee-length skirt, and the body beneath it seemed well put together. Almost unnaturally so. He'd been around an incredible number of sexy women recently, some who had supernatural assistance, but this seemed a bit different. Maybe it was how she held herself. Like she knew what she had, but none of it was really hers.

"Yep. So, Song tells me you two made a deal?"

"Of course. You think I do this for free? People with my Class are not that common, so I might as well get something out of it." She was smiling, a small and cold kind of thing.

"And what Class is that?"

"I'm a Healer. I do one thing, and I do it well. Now, there are a couple of ways to do this, but I suspect the most efficient one is also the one you want. I'll activate my Healing Aura, so the longer you stay within a few meters of me the more you'll get. The closer the better. Her perfectly-trimmed eyebrows raised a bit when she added that last part.

Todd chuckled. "So the longer I last, the more healing I get, is that it?"

She nodded at him, slowly and deliberately. "Exactly. Right here, right now. My suitemates are all rushing for the Orders, so we have all evening." She started taking off her clothing to reveal a body that was exactly as he thought he'd see: pale, taut, and smooth to the point it seemed artificial.

She has NO IDEA what she just asked for. I can outlast May when I need to.

Todd also began to strip down, but as he did he noticed something. He'd always been a skinny nerd, no apologies, but now he was developing something that almost looked like abs. His arms, too, had what could be mistaken for muscle definition. Was it the boost to his Charisma and Strength scores talking, or was the exercise of thrusting into someone one to TWELVE times a day doing his figure that much good? He tucked the thought away in the back of his head for later. Right now, he had someone to do. "You have a deal."

She began to glow with a soft light, and Todd took it as a cue to get started. One last check of his Status revealed a few things. His Health was doing only half-decently, being around 70%. His Mana was at 72 after the time he had spent recovering, as well. That meant that for maximum effect he should go until her powers brought him back to full, and when he did he'd be able to Invest 53 points to recover. Todd's body was engaged with his task now, regardless of if he was looking, and by the time he brought his eyes back to reality he was pressed up against her body, cool from the dorm air but warming up. He held Catherine around the waist and guided her down onto the mat so that he could get started for real.

Todd's senses were returning odd information. She had no interest in kissing, that was off the table. Certain other areas of her body that he might have expected to be sensitive were also... not quite numb, but barely more receptive than if he'd shaken her hand. Nipples and inner thighs would be a waste of time. Her neck was reading as a decent starting point, so as he pressed their bodies together he started nibbling on it, his hands roaming. She seemed to respond best to pressure on her mid and lower back, on her neck and shoulders. Finally, he got her ready enough to accept him, and worked himself into her bit by bit. This was... definitely more effort than others despite her agreeing to it, but eventually he was in a spot that he could start thrusting smoothly in and out of her.

He could feel Catherine's specialized kind of magic working on him. The bruises, scrapes, and less-visible aches were gradually receding. It didn't need to reflect on a Health bar to hurt, the little things also added up to sap someone's willpower and stamina. As he hurt less, he could move more freely, though she did not seem to want to be moved around to try more positions.

Still, he was here to go the distance, and her body was no more able to ignore his abilities than May's was. She came. Once, twice, possibly a couple more smaller ones in there. They weren't enormous or explosive things, but they were distinct and more than enough to keep her going. He took his time, though. This one wasn't rushed, and going at it with real vigor and enthusiasm wouldn't have made a difference. As a result, he just took a moment to check his Status every now and then, and once he was at 98% Health he figured he could finish up. Instead of aiming for her pleasure, he shifted pace to help himself, and a minute or so later was firing off deeply into her while activating Investiture.

The effect, as usual, was immediate. It was different this time, though. Not that the buff itself changed nature, but the effect on her. Sure, she grew a bit. Her muscles firmed, her breasts grew, her hips widened. It all served to make her look more unnatural, though. Like it was a layer of extra artifice laid on top of what was already there. She only needed a moment to catch her breath before she was pushing him off of her and reaching for her clothes. "Not bad. And you say this lasts a day?"

"24 hours, yes."

Not bad? Seriously? At least four orgasms and almost an hour inside of you and that rates a Not Bad? Either her standards are absurdly high or sex just isn't her thing.

"Definitely well worth it. I had to cancel a different appointment for this, but I can feel myself working better."

"Wait, aren't you a Healer? If someone else needed your services, are they okay?" Todd paused a moment as he was pulling on his clothing.

She shrugged. "Should be, but they didn't have anything for me that could equal this. I'll handle them... probably tomorrow, I have three heals scheduled but those are usually easy."

"Uh, pardon the confusion, but how do you know you are going to have that? Sorry, not too many Healers running around so I'm trying to learn."

"Oh, that. Shannon and Titania are regulars, and they've been joined by a new girl. Megan, I think her name is. They train hard, so they need healing, and render services I really need."

All of a sudden, Todd was feeling a bit dirty. She really just didn't seem to care, did she? It was all just transactions to her. It didn't matter who needed it, only who could pay and how much. None of this escaped his mouth. "Uh, Tim's group?"

"Yes, how did you know?"

"I've worked with him a bit. Did he... have anything to say about his mana thing? I get he's trying to level, but the whole setup he's got makes that difficult."

"Oh, that. Yes, actually. He said he's talking to some people to secure a potion supply, though what he could possibly give them that's worth that much is beyond me. He said he wants to expand operations."

The dirty feeling immediately left Todd, to be replaced by the sensation of his blood turning to ice. "Uh. When would that be?"

She glanced at the clock on the wall. "He should be at the meeting now, actually."

The first fifteen words that went through his head were ones that his father had once washed his mouth out with soap for using at a family dinner. "Thanks for the info. He'll probably let me know soon so that I can incorporate them into his training plan. Speaking of, I still have homework since not all of my exams went well. Need anything else before I go?"

"Nope."

"See you later, then, though you'll understand that I hope I won't need your services."

"If you do, you know where to find me and how much it costs." Catherine waved as he left, either not noticing or not caring about his shift in attitude.

Todd left the room. Quickly. His pace did not abate until he got all the way back to his suite. He barely heard when Ghata greeted him, going straight to his room and closing the door. With shaking hands, he pulled up a search engine to comb through the more common sites for potion prices. While it looked, he pulled out the page of math he'd been working out for Tim. With a few starting assumptions, he could get to working out new numbers.

"Todd? What's going on?" Song had opened his door, a look of concern on her face.

Todd looked at his screen, pulling information into a spreadsheet so that he could add another column. "Couple of things. First up, Catherine? I would really rather we don't deal with her again if we can avoid it. Let her focus on people whose lives and limbs actually need saving, since she happily ignores that for money."

Song made a face. "I didn't realize that about her. There's a lot that makes more sense, now. What else?"

Predicted power in one column, price in another, a formula to determine average efficiency from there, and re-sort. "She gave me some news. Tim made a deal with someone to secure mana potions, so that means we replaced Bradley with a wildly different problem. He's about to ask me for an actual training plan, and I can't delay him any longer by saying that his mana issues are not solvable with anything but time and patience."

Song's eyes widened at that, her skin paled. "There... there could be more thralls running around soon?"

"That's what I'm trying to figure out." He did another sheet, this one only with information about ones advertised to taste good. "Okay, worst case scenario. If he's drinking one that tastes decent every day because either the sponsor is stupidly rich or his offer is stupidly valuable, he can have another Thrall up in about four days, effectively maxing out at seven in a couple of weeks. That would be OBNOXIOUSLY expensive, though, so if that's the case we have way bigger problems." He tapped a few more numbers out. "Plus the fact that he will level up very quickly doing this, possibly gaining an ability that will throw the whole thing off in his favor."

"SEVEN? Todd, that's so far beyond what we can let happen that it..."

"Trust me, I know, and I agree." He kept putting in numbers. "Most likely he's drinking potions at most half that speed. That puts him enthralling his next victim in about a week and capping out at six a month and a half from now, since at least Megan will need to be renewed between now and then. If he's willing to put up with the kind of potion that May got for me every day, that could go as high as twenty." Todd breathed in, then slowly let it out. "Obviously, none of this is okay. There are a couple of things we can do, though."

"Like?"

Todd looked up at the ceiling. "We know, just based on patterns, that he heavily favors Beastkin for his thralls. Why this is, I don't know, but the chances are a bit too much for three out of three to be a coincidence. Even here. It might be something to do with what Professor Ruddertail said while he was rescuing me. Beastkin are much more responsive to training regimens, so they make sense when they're being pushed like that. Or maybe he just has a thing for fur, I don't know."

Song's eyes lit up. "I'm rushing for Theta Delta! It's the biggest concentration of Beastkin on campus by a long shot, so if I let my Order Leader know then that will slow him down or stop him!"

"That'll work! I was about to go person by person, but if TD decides to spread the word then it'll be way faster and more effective." Todd thought for a moment. "That goes double for anyone who has abilities that can help others regenerate their Mana. Whether he needs it or not, Timothy is going to be looking for those first. Think you can get over there to let Leador Cantor know tonight?"

"I'll fly over right now!" Song got up and left the room, whether to head out the front door of the dorms or to fly out of her own window Todd didn't know. What he did know was that he had studying to do for classes that he knew he'd be going back to the next day along with a lot of pre-planning. He needed to figure out what Tim's best moves would be, then how to direct him as far away from those moves as possible without making it obvious that he was.He had to put enough grit in the gears to slow the Mesmer down, to give everyone enough time to get ready for him to be on the hunt again.

Oh, and while he was at it, he still needed to support both Song and Ghata's attempts at getting into their Orders, and make his own plans for when Jem's enchantments ran out in a few days. And doing more research for the stuff about his Class.

That gave him an idea. While he was researching his own Class and how it worked, why not get data points for other classes?

And not just my suite mates, either. What if I compile a dossier on Mesmers? Or Brawlers? Sure, it'll be harder to get the direct data points, but I have a lot of good information already that I can use. It just needs to be compiled and organized...

As he wrote, more and more of the day caught up with him, bit by bit. No matter how much he had gotten done, no matter what healing he received, it was a lot. Todd nodded, nearly napping, but his head popped up when he heard a tapping at his window. No, not his chamber door. It was, however, a Raven. Todd got up and walked over to let in Corey, who had been perched there. Corey stretched out a bit once he was inside, his wings nearly brushing both walls. "Thanks for letting me in, and for the hint on the event," he started without preamble.

"Don't mention it. I'm sure that they're going to have a lot of self-checking, but if enough people see that for what it is and poison the data pool then hopefully they don't get much progress from today's event."

"You mean that

particular one

of today's events." Corey's harsh voice was a bit pointed. "How are you doing in particular? I saw some of the marks on you before, but they seem to be gone."

"I traded for some magical healing. Just really tired now, but no rest for the weary. Oh, and I almost forgot. Glad you're the one visiting." Todd was looking down at his pages of notes.

"This is possibly why I felt a nudge to come visit. or I was concerned about you, which I choose to believe was the real cause."

Todd didn't want to think that one through too hard. He briefly went over who Tim was and what he was up to. "I know we aren't supposed to do this, but people of similar types tend to be more social with each other. Song is letting Theta Delta know. I need you to tell other Beastkin as you can."

Corey's beak was hanging open, but snapped shut. "I will do so, but also with the preface that I will likely not be believed by many."

"I get it, but for every Beastfolk woman with useful skills or Status Abilities who listens, the spread gets slowed. And the thing is, I can't let it be known that I'm involved."

"Because then he becomes a direct threat to you, personally, something you just got done dealing with. I understand. Perhaps better than you know." Corey looked both sympathetic and uncomfortable. Exchange completed, Corey turned and flew away to whatever his next plan was.

Todd felt that he might have some similar stories to his own pre-Change, but wisely also felt that this was probably not the time for them. It also occurred to him that he actually didn't know what Corey's living arrangements were, since he'd never seen the man at this building other than coming to see him. It would have to be a mystery. Suddenly feeling much more tired, Todd got changed into pajamas and went to sleep.

This time, when he found himself at the blackboard in the mental classroom, he knew exactly what was going on. "May, you in here?"

"I am." She was seated at the front desk again, watching him.

"Are you okay? The others told me you flew off after what happened today with..."

"I will be, Todd," she interrupted, clearly not wanting to talk about it. "A lot more had to go wrong for that to happen than even Professor Ruddertail knew, and I wasn't there to protect you."

"Well, it all worked out, so no worries." Todd looked back at the board. Apparently, what was on his mind was the information on Tim. "It's not homework today, but I still have some things to work through."

"So I see. Do you really think he's going to get that bad?" May stood, walking up to the board and looking around the lines and points.

"Possibly worse. And don't get me started about that Healer, I still feel dirty about that even if everything else had to happen."
