Apprehended: Twenty-Four
Pregnancy is defined as the quality of being heavy with important contents, issue, significance, etc.; unusual consequence or capacity; fertility.
Currently, my capacity was reaching its limit. It was in every nauseas episode, every bought of indigestion and every hormonal imbalance that afflicted me to the point of insanity.
Annnnnddddd...it was also my birthday.
Which was a day I never really celebrated. Jerry would treat it as any other day of abuse. Before I met him, I had no one to celebrate it with. Now things were different. I acquired Ethan...friends...people I
wanted
to share it with.
And Ethan was more than-
"Hey there, dream-cloud." Lily waved a small hand in front of my face to get my attention.
"Oh. Sorry," I mumbled.
"Are you feeling okay?"
"Yeah...yeah." I pointed above my head, attempting to steer the conversation away from my thoughts. "Are the balls really necessary?"
She nodded vigorously. "Absolutely."
"But pink?" I pointed out. "Other people are going to be here."
"It's your day. Not theirs."
I glanced around and shivered in my coat. "Why are we doing this outside again?"
She began stringing some pink and white lights from one thick tree trunk to another, forming a large circle and shrugged. "It wasn't my idea. I thought it was yours."
"No. Just because it stopped snowing and the wind calmed doesn't mean I wanted it outside. It's going to be freezing tonight."
She continued decorating, moving around the clearing. "I'm sure Ethan will build a small fire or something." She glanced at the time on her watch. "We only have about an hour of light left. You want to head in?"
"Will you be alright here?" I asked.
"Of course I will." She pointed a finger behind her. "Gavin is here."
I laughed lowly. "Alright then. I guess I should get ready?"
"That'll be great. I'm almost done." She turned. "Hey Gavin?"
The male's eyes lit up as he focused on her. "Yes, sweet rose?"
Lily blushed. It was quite endearing to witness from an outside perspective. "I need to string these last lights up here but I can't reach."
Gav was on it, excusing himself from Richen and Jared as he approached and the two began talking intimately. I politely excused myself and walked away to make my way back to the cabin.
"Where are you going?"
I turned, catching sight of Richen. "Oh. Hello."
He didn't greet me. Instead, he began to walk beside me, his eyes straight ahead.
"I'm just going back inside."
"You're not supposed to be walking out here alone."
Puffs of heated breath rose from my mouth, mixing with the icy air. "Everyone is busy," I said.
"It doesn't matter."
Well...alright then.
His odd eyes scanned the woods swiftly. "There are dangers out here. The light of day doesn't provide protection. You and Lily must be with a male at all times outside of the cabins."
I stepped over a particularly large rock. "Well, is Ethan back yet?"
"No."
"Did he call you?"
"No."
"Do you know what time he'll be back?"
"No."
Wow. So informative.
"Did he tell you where he was going? He only told me that he would be back before the party."
Richen didn't answer. Which wasn't a surprise. The male was difficult to communicate with; always tense and rigid. Like a tight band on the brink of a firm snap. One I didn't want to be around if he so happened to lose his shit.
We walked the rest of the way in silence. Which was fine. Richen creeped me out a bit. I stole a couple of glances in his direction as we moved along. Him: steady, silent and sure. Me: awkward, clumsy and noisy.
By the time we made it to the cabin, the tension was so thick, it was nearly visible. I gave him a nod. "Thanks for walking me back."
"Don't leave again without a male." That was all he said before turning around and heading back.
I entered the cabin and exhaled deeply as the heat of the fire licked at my frozen skin. It felt great to be indoors again. I wasn't sure why we were celebrating my birthday outside in the cold but I welcomed the heat like an old friend.
I peeled off my coat and tossed it on the couch. "Ethan?"
No answer.
I moved to the stairs and made my way up. "Ethan?"
Once more, no answer.
The bedroom was derelict. I glanced at my phone on the dresser and wondered if I should call his cell. I didn't want to appear desperate or anything. I only wanted to know where he was. I considered it me being nosey. Not needy.
Ugh.
I grabbed my phone, took off my shoes and sat on the disheveled bed. I sifted through the screen, tapping until I found his number and called.
It rang twice.
"My female. You alright?"
"Uhhh...yes. Where are you?"
"Just buying some last minute things, Luna."
I rolled my eyes. "Ethan, stop. It's not that big a deal."
"It's your birthday," he said. "The day you were given life. I'd say that's reason enough to celebrate."
"It's just another day."
"Not for me. I fully intend to celebrate you. Whether you agree or not. Are you ready?"
I glanced at my clothing. "Do I have to get dressed up? I really don't want to."
"Wear whatever you want. Just shower and be dressed. I'm on my way."
"How long will it be until you arrive?"
