"Shit!" Vera cursed as the elevator door closed. She was already ten minutes late for her internship. It was the fourth time this week she'd shown up late, and Mr. Sadler had already called her out on the carpet for it once.
She frantically pushed the call button, and tapped her portfolio nervously. Fortunately the second elevator car opened up a moment later. Vera darted in and jammed the "door close button." As she looked up, her pulse quickened; Mr. Sadler coolly put his arm in the closing door and walked into the car.
Vera shrank into herself, her portfolio held before her. Even though he was shorter than she was, his very presence was suddenly intimidating. He waited until the door closed to speak.
The floor heaved, leaving her stomach and heart behind. "Ms. Chapin, I believe we spoke about your tardy behaviors last week. What did I say then?"
Vera's mouth was cotton. She stared at her feet as she stuttered "that 'if this happens again, I'll have to find a new internship; perhaps one that is clamoring for delinquent art students.'"
He took a deep breath and smiled broadly. "You remember perfectly. A shame you have not appeared to learn from what you heard so well."
The bell dinged, Vera's stomach and heart resumed their places somewhat colder, and the door to the elevator opened.
"While I am tempted to tell you to return to your car immediately, we do need you today. It's Friday after all, and it would be terrible to have to fire you before you've done your weeks' worth of work.
"See me before you go to lunch. You'll enjoy it more afterwards I'd wager."
Vera nodded shakily, her chin hitting her chest in the process. She wiped her smudged mascara and stepped onto the office floor, nearly crashing into one of the mailroom staff pushing his cart. She apologized under her breath and dashed to her shared cubicle and crumpled to the floor, her hands wrapped around her knees.
Mr. Sadler, somewhat more composedly, went into his office, shutting the door quietly. He launched into his work, pausing only briefly to revel in the memory of the tardy intern's shapely buttocks.
Vera felt a hand on her shoulder. Alyssa spoke softly in her ear "what's wrong Vera?"
"Mr. Sadler got on the same elevator car as I did. He knew we were both late, and I have to go to his office before lunch to get blessed out again."
"Vera; you don't need this kind of stress at work, just talk to your teachers about getting a different internship."
"Are you kidding? Do you know what the graphic design market is like these days? Half the other people in my class are working through a temp agency. I was lucky to get this job and I'm not going to just give it away because I can't manage my time."
She patted Alyssa's arm and stood. "I'll be fine Alyssa, don't worry. Might have to do a little sucking up, but I'll be fine in the end."
Alyssa smiled at her slyly. "Just don't let your boyfriend know." Vera chuckled lightly and went to her desk, her mind already shifting from the elevator to the day's tasks.
-----------
Vera was checking her e-mail when she noticed it was half past one. If she left now, she would be right on time for her meeting with Mr. Sadler.
She arranged her hair in the reflection of the monitor and strode to his office, trying her best to broadcast confidence and determination.
It lasted as far as his office door.
She hesitated before knocking, leaning in close and knocked softly, her fingernails brushing against the door as her hand opened. Perhaps she had knocked too softly, there was no response. She stood up straight again and gave a smart rap with her knuckles.
Her heart skipped a beat as Mr. Sadler's voice intoned behind her "Ms. Chapin, how lovely to see you on time."
Vera whirled to see Mr. Sadler smiling at her. "Shall we chat?" he asked amicably.
He walked around her, just closer than she was comfortable with, and held the door open for her. She ducked in quickly.
He closed the door and sat on the edge of his desk. "Have a seat Ms. Chapin.
"I realize that in college, even in graduate school, you are cut some slack for tardiness. But here time is money, trite as that may sound, and coordination is key to our efforts here. If people stagger their lunch breaks or work in staggered shifts, what type of collaboration would there be?"
Vera didn't know if the question was rhetorical or not, but her throat felt so tight she couldn't bear to try to answer. She unfastened the top button of her blouse and swallowed quietly. It did not help matters any.
"If a meeting is supposed to last only fifteen minutes and someone is fifteen minutes late, what sort of position does that put them in?"
He let the question hang in the air.
"Ms. Chapin. I hired you myself, and it is easily within my power to fire you.
"While you are a very talented designer, there are several other people in your class looking for a job, I believe. If I am not mistaken, any of them might be more... temporally aware... than you are.
"Can you offer anything in your defense, Ms. Chapin? Anything you can give us that one of your various classmates cannot?"
Vera still found it difficult to swallow. "I'm sure there must be something sir. I can be on time from now on--early even! Stay late to finish up what I'm behind on.
"You could dock my pay for time missed... even give me a pay cut."
"Ms. Chapin, we are contractually obligated to pay you the rate you currently receive. The school wouldn't have it if we just cut your rates. If we dock your pay, they will want to know why.
"I doubt you would want to have them learn the answer--they might even pull you out themselves." He glanced at her neck... such a lovely sight.
"As far as coming in early and staying late, I'd hate to inconvenience you so. Though it might set a good example to the other employees.
"Of course, another student might not need to work such long hours, they might be more productive than you.
"Any other bright ideas Ms. Chapin?"
Vera felt numb and overwhelmed. What would she do if she lost this internship? She'd have to stay another year at school, but she didn't have the money for that. For that matter, her scholarship might get revoked if she lost this internship. And if her scholar--
"Ms. Chapin, please gather your things when you leave today. I'll be placing a call to your school after you leave. Try to enjoy your lunch."
She looked up, shocked. "What? No."
"No, Ms. Chapin? I'm afraid I don't understand." He was halfway around his desk, but turned as he heard her reply.
"No, Mr. Sadler, I don't think you realize how much I need this. I just... my boyfriend is going to be pissed at me, and I'll lose my scholarship at school, and I can't go back to waiting tables.
"I need this job Mr. Sadler. I will do whatever I have to in order to keep it." There was steel in her voice, and it hit a nerve in Mr. Sadler. He glanced quickly at his growing erection.
"Ms. Chapin, I highly doubt that you can say anything to make me keep you. Go to lunch, finish your day, and try to find a better placement over the weekend. Good day."
As he continued around his desk, he stopped mid-stride; something was tugging on his leg.
"I am not too proud to beg, Mr. Sadler. I--oh..."
He had turned to her, his erection now slightly lower than her eye level. She swallowed; a little harder this time.
"You're right Mr. Sadler, I should go." She started to stand, and felt his hand on her shoulder.
"I asked you what you could offer that your classmates could not Ms. Chapin. I think you've found an answer to that question. Do you understand me?"
Vera looked up at him, dread gnawing at her stomach again. "Mr. Sadler... my boyfriend...."
He gazed down at her with a look of bemusement in his eyes. "Ms. Chapin... my phone, your school..." his hand slid across her shoulder, up her neck, and around her lips, lifting away quickly. She gasped involuntarily "... your choice."
Vera looked down to the veiled manhood before her eyes.
"I think you should have something to eat for lunch, don't you, Ms. Chapin?" His hands were on both shoulders now.
