Prologue
Charlotte was out of Alex's league and he knew it. His fingers tapped the table in the dimly lit restaurant as he waited for her to arrive. He'd researched about a hundred different restaurants in their university town for the perfect place to spend their six-month anniversary. It was the sort of place where the wait staff were rude to you and you paid extra for the privilege, especially on a Friday night. He hoped it would be up to Charlotte's standard.
She glided in seconds before the time they'd set to meet, flashing a smile at the maรฎtre d' as she made her way toward Alex's table. Her golden brown hair bounced around her face, framing those piercing blue eyes that seemed to cut into Alex's soul from the moment they first met. An asymmetric black dress clung to her curves. One of her shapely legs was exposed up to her thigh, while on the other side the dress was held together with ladder of strings offering a tantalising glance of her lightly tanned skin up to the neckline. Alex found himself staring at her ample chest and the gaps in her dress next to it looking for signs of her underwear before she sat down opposite him.
"I'm sorry, have you been waiting for me long?"
"No, no, I only just got here" Alex lied nervously. He'd got there half an hour early to triple check the booking.
"Wow, a seven course tasting menu! I hope we can get through it quickly, I'm meeting up with Jess and Rachel in half an hour for a quick shopping trip." Alex's mind went haywire. Half an hour! Maybe he could talk to the waiter. Could they bring the first three courses at once? Why would she arrange to meet up with her best friends on today of all... her wry smile stopped him in his tracks.
"Alex. Shopping? All the shops are closed at this time for a start." She let out a gentle laugh. "Just relax, I really appreciate you organising this dinner - the menu looks divine. And you're looking very handsome in that shirt. Babe, I'm yours for the whole evening".
Seven courses later, Charlotte was staring at him in that way that stripped back his layers, made his heart swell, made him want to be a better man. "I've really enjoyed the last six months together, Alex. You're kind, caring and incredibly compassionate. I can see this relationship going somewhere, and I think you feel the same way."
"Yeah of course. I mean, it's been the best six months of my life. You're smart, you make me laugh and it doesn't hurt that you're incredibly hot."
She brushed the compliment off with a giggle, but then her face became more serious. "Ok great. In that case there's something I need you to do. There's this... tradition, let's say. A test. It will prove to me beyond any doubt that we can be a perfect partnership, that our relationship is destined for the long haul."
"Wow ok. Sure, what do you need me to do?"
"You'll learn more as we go, but the test is in three parts, performed over a week, starting tomorrow. First is a test of self control: you must show that, when necessary, you can put your desires to one side for the good of our relationship. Second is a test of service: I need to know you can adequately cater to my needs. And finally, a test of trust: you must show you have absolute trust in me. The last test is the most important and you will likely find it the most challenging."
Alex's life had been transformed since they'd started dating. He'd opened up to her about things that he'd never told anyone else. He could hardly see how something testing his trust would be a challenge.
"So you said it's a tradition? From where?"
"All the couples in my family went through this and you've seen how strong they are together. They simply wouldn't allow me to be with someone who couldn't pass it. I've had ex-boyfriends try and fail. Alex, this process will be hard on you at times. You need to know that you can drop out at any point and there will be no hard feelings between us. But if you do choose to persist till the end, I know we will be something special."
Alex thought about Charlotte's sisters and parents. He'd not considered it before, but while the men did seem, plain perhaps, compared to the beauty of the women in her family, the bonds with their wives seemed both steadfast and electric. Not to mention their stratospheric careers, bar none. It was a future he could only dream of six months ago. "I'll do it, whatever you need me to do. I'd do anything to show you how much I care about you."
A smile lit up Charlotte's face. "Fantastic. Now, handsome, while these challenges might be difficult at times, that doesn't mean they can't be fun. And whilst they officially start tomorrow, I do have a gift for you to say thank you for officially accepting." With that she leaned down and picked something off the floor. "I took these off during the seventh course".
All of a sudden Alex found something being thrown towards him from across the table. He wasn't sure if the stuffy waiter or the stuffier patrons looked round at that moment, but if they had they would have seen Alex frantically trying his best conceal a lace thong in his shirt pocket whilst the sexiest woman in the room sat across from him, giggling to herself. "Come on Tiger, let's get home. I want to have some fun with you tonight."
