"Julia? Julia! JULIA! Wake up! We're here!" a voice whispered.
"Huh? What?" Julia mumbled.
"We're here!" the voice was louder and sounded very excited.
Julia slowly opened her eyes, "What is it?"
"We're finally here! In the Congo!" the voice shouted.
Julia brought her hands up to her face and rubbed her eyes. She turned and looked out of the window of the plane.
Manuel was right. The plane was indeed flying over the jungles of the Congo.
"Down there is where our destiny lies!" Manuel said.
Dr. Manuel, a well-known archaeologist, received an e-mail from one of his colleagues two days ago, stating that a lost Congolese tribe was located. And that the tribe's elders had granted permission for Manuel and his team to conduct research on them. In exchange, the tribe's elders requested that the outsiders were not to disclosed the location of the village.
Julia, a medical doctor, became very excited. She decided to accompany her husband on this trip. Her purpose was to document the natural medicine that the tribe used to cure ailments and perhaps, to discover new cures.
As the plane flew over the jungle, the speaker crackled and the pilot's voice was heard over the intercom.
"Doctors? We're here. If you look to your right, you will see the runway." the pilot said.
Both Julia and Manuel quickly scrambled out of their seats and looked out the windows.
"Doctors? Please sit down and fasten your seat belts." the pilot said. "The landing will be bumpy one!"
Julia and Manuel quickly took to their seats and fastened their seat belts.
The tarmac was a strip of dirt and the pilot tried his best to land the plane smoothly. It was indeed a bumpy landing. But they made it.
As the plane slowly taxied to the building, the pilot said over the loud speaker to keep the seat belts fastened until the plane came to a complete stop.
After five minutes, the plane reached the building and came to a complete stop.
"You may now remove your seat belts and gather your on-board luggage." the pilot said. "But do not exit the plane until the ladder has been locked into place."
Julia and Manuel unfastened their seat belts and stood up. They began removing their luggage from the overhead compartments and slowly made their way to the front of the plane. The pilot came out from the cockpit and opened the door. He slowly lowered the ladder and locked it into place.
"Please wait inside the plane until I have chocked the wheels." the pilot said.
Once the wheels were chocked, the pilot entered the plane.
"Please exit the plane slowly and I'll bring your luggage out." the pilot said.
"Thank you." Julia said. "Let's go, Manuel!"
As Julia and Manuel walked down the ladder, they saw a car approaching the plane.
"That must be Danny!" Manuel remarked.
By that time, the pilot had removed and placed the luggage by the doctors.
"Thank you." Manuel said as he pulled out his wallet. He opened the wallet and pulled out a hundred dollar bill. Manuel gave the bill to the pilot.
"Thank you, Sir!" the pilot said with a big smile on his face. "If there is anything else I could do for you, please do not hesitate to contact me!"
"Will do." Manuel said.
At that same time, the car finally reached Julia and Manuel. The pilot had disappeared back into his plane.
The front passenger door of the car opened and Dr, Danny stepped out.
"Hey Manuel! Hello Julia!" Danny said. "Welcome to the Congo! Ready to make history?"
"Hello Danny!" Manuel replied. "Absolutely!"
"Hi Danny!" Julia said.
Danny waved to the driver and he exited the car.
"This is Bowy! He's my research assistant and translator." Danny said.
"And don't forget driver." Bowy said. "Let me help you with your luggage, Madam and Sir!"
"Thank you, Bowy!" Julia replied. "Please call me Julia and this is my husband, Manuel."
"You are very welcome, Julia!" Bowy replied.
"Bowy? Let me help you." Manuel said.
"That's okay." Bowy replied.
"I insist." Manuel said.
"Thank you." Bowy replied as he picked up both suitcases and headed for the car.
"Julia? Let get into the car. It's too hot!" Danny said.
As Bowy and Manuel loaded the luggage into the truck, Julia and Danny climbed into the car. Julia sat in the back while Danny sat in the front.
Once the luggage was secured in the trunk, Manuel climbed into the back and Bowy climbed into the driver's seat.
Bowy started the car and turned on the air conditioning.
"That feels must better!" Danny said. Julia and Manuel, both, nodded in agreement.
"Danny? Why do you need a translator? Bowy speaks perfect English." Julia asked.
"The Democratic Republic of Congo was a colony of Belgium and they speak French here. Also, when we meet the tribe tomorrow, we'll need someone that can speak Swahili as well.
"I see." Julia replied.
"Okay Bowy. Let's go home." Danny said.
Bowy nodded his head and put the car into gear and drove off.
The house was about thirty minutes away and the road was made of dirt. It was a bumpy ride to Danny's house.
When they arrived, Bowy was very happy to see that his family was waiting for them.
"This is my family. Doctor Danny was very kind to give us a home." Bowy remarked.
"Bowy, you and your family deserve a home." Danny replied.
"You have a wonderful family, Bowy." Julia added as Manuel smiled and nodded.
Bowy parked the car and got out.
"Des gamins! Venez aider avec les bagages! [Kids! Come help with the luggage!]
" Bowy said.
His children came running as Bowy headed for the trunk. He opened the trunk and took out the luggage.
Bowy's wife also headed towards the car.
"Hello." Bowy's wife said.
"This is my wife, Nancy, and my two children, Glen and Jennifer." Bowy said as he introduced his family to Julia and Manuel.
"Hello. Nice to meet you all. You have such as lovely family." Julia replied.
"Thank you." Nancy said.
As they all headed into the house with the luggage, Nancy asked Julia is she'd ever been to Africa.
"Nope. It's my first time and it's lovely." Julia replied.
Once inside the house, Danny asked Nancy to bring some refreshments for our guests. Nancy nodded her head and headed for the kitchen. The children also headed for the kitchen.
"Bowy? Please take the luggage to the guest bedroom. Thank you." Danny asked.
Bowy nodded his head and headed upstairs with the luggage.
"And when you come down, please join us in the living room." Danny added.
Bowy nodded his head and continued upstairs with the luggage.
"Wow! This place is amazing!" Manuel said.
"Come and sit. Your journey here must be tiresome." Danny said as he led Julia and Manuel to the living room.
As Julia and Manuel sat down, Nancy and the children came into the living room with the refreshments. Soon after, Bowy showed up.
"Please sit. Everyone." Danny said. "And help yourself to the refreshments."
As the children started to select the food, Nancy spoke up.
"Jennifer. Glen. Guests first. Please offer our guests first."
"That's quite alright." Manuel said.
"No Sir. Guests first." Nancy replied.
"Yes Ma'am!" Manuel said.
They all started to laugh.
Danny, Bowy, Manuel and Julia discussed the research project that was going to take place tomorrow. He re-emphasized that under no circumstances that the location be divulged to anyone other than the team. Everyone understood. The team created a list of research topics to investigate. By the time the list was created, it was time for dinner.
Nancy had created a traditional Congolese dish for the guests.
"Very tasty!" Manuel exclaimed as Julia nodded in agreement.
After dinner was over, Danny and his guests retired to the living room once again. Nancy took the dishes into the kitchen to wash them.
"I'll give you a hand." Julia said as she stood up and joined Nancy.
"That's very kind but not necessary." Nancy replied.
"I insist." Julia answered.
"Okay then. Please take the platter with you. And thanks!" Nancy said as she smiled.
The two ladies took the dishes and headed into the kitchen.
"Where's Bowy?" Julia asked.
"He has taken the children for their baths." Nancy replied.
"Okay." Julia replied.
Meanwhile, Danny and Manuel continued discussing tomorrow's project.
"What are we to expect?" Manuel asked.
"About what?" Danny replied.
"From the tribe. Are there going to be issues?" Manuel continued asking.
"There shouldn't be. Bowy and I spoke to the tribal elders and they seem fine about the research project." Danny replied.
"That's good! I'm glad to hear that." Manuel said.
As the conversation continued, Bowy showed up.
"The children are bathed and in bed." Bowy exclaimed as he walked to the liquor cabinet. He opened the cabinet and took out a bottle of wine.
"Congolese wine! Would you like to try some? Manuel?" Bowy asked. "Danny?"
"Sure!" Manuel replied.
"Not for me! That stuff will grow hairs on your chest!" Danny said as he laughed. "I have enough!"
Bowy and Manuel started laughing as well. At the same time, Nancy and Julia walked into the room.
"Are the children in bed, dear?" Nancy asked.
