Cheerleading practice dragged on for Destiny. The new recruits were still bumbling idiots and Tara-Belle was still tetchy about her phone breaking, losing the videos and with it a nice paycheck from bitchhaze.com. Destiny didn't understand why Tara-Belle was always so obsessed with money, she'd never had a problem with it, and anyway that was a month ago now, who has time to dwell on that?
After practice Destiny went straight home, today her parents were coming to visit and take her to see some stupid play, even though Theta Eta Theta were having an awesome party tonight. But Destiny knew that when you go to as few lectures and bomb as many tests as she had, the constant stream of money from the bank of mum and dad was the only thing keeping her at Yale and so she would have to keep them on side.
Wearing one of her more demure and sensible dresses Destiny met her parents at the fancy restaurant they always went to before the Theatre, her mum droned on about the land holding business while her father boasted about a potential run for DA in the future and Destiny continued her smile and nod, good daughter routine while being absolutely bored to tears.
Next it was time for the theatre, the sign above the door proudly announcing the current play, an avant garde look at historic and modern slavery called "Chains". As they arrived Destiny's father announced to the man at the ticket counter that they were the contest winners and were told to pick up their tickets on the day. The man behind the counter apologised that the viewing booth could only hold two, but agreed that Destiny could still have a ticket, just that the family would not be sat together.
While her dad ranted and raved Destiny secretly felt her luck was changing. If she wasn't sat by her parents she wouldn't have to pretend to care about this stupid play and could be playing on her phone or something. Eventually she took her ticket and saw it was right at the back, more good news, nobody would be able to see her there. She grabbed herself a bottle of wine and took her seat, idly reading the program that bragged that thanks to an anonymous donor, tonight's performance will be more raw and visceral than previous.
Destiny began to feel sleepy.
...
Destiny was jerked awake by a horrible smell being held under her nose. So many sensations washed over her at once that she couldn't process them all and resolved herself to embrace the creeping terror while taking stock of her situation. She tried to scream but a gag had been firmly planted in her mouth that muffled the sound to a moan that couldn't be heard above the chatter of the audience. At the moment she could only see the empty stage and the closed curtain in front of her, however her view was narrowed by the black leather mask stretched over her head. She instinctively tried to move her hands to peel the mask off her face, but her hands were locked in place, outstretched on either side of her. She tried to run but her legs were also locked in place. With all this fear and sansation it took her longer than she would have cared to admit to deduce from the cold metal touching her flesh that she was completely naked, tied to an apparatus on stage and about to be revealed to the waiting crowd, a crowd that included her mother and father.
She saw the shadow of a person slip out of sight and was alone, confused and naked as she heard the music swell to a crescendo and the curtains parted.
Destiny screamed into her gag as she felt the audiences gasp at the naked young lady tied to a metal apparatus in a play about slavery. A lot of the audience gave murmurs wondering if this was OK, before the director took to the stage to address the audience.
"Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to explain. My vision for this play had always been to highlight the indifference to slavery by those who are not confronted by it's visceral realities. For a while I had sought to find a way to bring that essance to this play, however last week this actress approached with the best idea I have heard in a long time. She felt so strongly about the abuses of modern slavery she felt a real demonstration of those abuses running concurrently with my narrative, would provoke the discomfort we should be feeling every time we consume the products of human suffering." Destiny's eyes were wide with fear, she didn't know what kind of set up this was but she never agreed to be abused in front of a crowd for this weirdos play.
Destiny screamed into her gag and thrashed against her restraints, desperate to let the audience know that she did not want to be up there, even screaming to her mother and father who were in the booth watching their daughter be exposed to the audience. However the audience was already on board with the directors view that this play should be uncomfortable and saw her protests as a good actress doing her job well. Destiny collapsed against her bonds, sobbing into the mask.
The actors moved onto the set and the play begun. The director had clearly planned the use of a defenceless naked lady to enhance the play, the opening scene was a group of 19th century slave owners talking about how to get the most out of their slaves. Each time one told the others about the abuses they inflicted on their slaves they would punctuate it with a loud slap on Destiny's exposed flesh. Most of the time it would be on her buttocks, causing her toned thighs the wiggle for the audience, but other times they would slap her breasts or land a swat on her inside thigh. During one monologue where an actor talks about the torture he uses to break slaves, the actor pointedly grabbed both of Destiny's nipples and brutally twisted them, causing Destiny's loudest scream into the gag yet. At the end of the scene the audience applauded Destiny's torturers, even her parents were congratulating the sadists punishing their humiliated daughter in front of everyone.
For the next scene the actors and actresses playing slaves lined up in chains next to Destiny. The scene was a slave owner talking to his new purchases, his employees ready to punish whoever stepped out of line.
"You need to remember you belong to me now" the actor announced. On cue one of the minders got out a pen and wrote "slave" across Destiny's chest.
"You are no longer human."
The actor took this cue to write "worthless" down Destiny's leg
"You are inferior."
The actor wrote "filth on Destiny's other leg.
"And being superior I can do whatever I want with you."
The actor wrote "property" across Destiny's navel, before very deliberately groping her for the benefit of the audience.
The scene then clearly established the main character by having a slave speak out of turn. The owner promised a swift whipping as punishment, this was of course implemented on Destiny.
After that scene the play got into full narrative swing and the abuse of destiny became less frequent as more of the story was told from the perspectives of the slaves. It was actually very well written, a deep emotional story of hope for a future without slavery intercut with satirical jibes that referenced modern forms of indenture that played on the notion of modern slavery. Some moments of emotional depth were so raw they left the audience in tears.
Destiny was also in tears for a different reason.
After a while it was time for the emotionally charged final scene of the first act. One of the slaves collapsed in front of Destiny and their friend went to one of the slave owners to beg for water for their friend.
"Oh I'll give them water." The actor announced, before stepping over to Destiny and spitting on her, his globule of spit trickled down her body for the whole audience to see.
"Please sir don't you have any decency?" The actor yelled.
"I have a decent evaluation of what I am allowed to do to my property." The actor replied climbing on to the metal scaffolding with destiny and dramatically running his tongue from her breasts up to her face. "You all belong to me and I can do what I want." He announced, wrapping his hand around Destiny's neck in a fake choke hold while running his other hand up and down her body. Eventually when the tension reached boiling point the actors playing the slaves rushed him, dragged him away from Destiny and began a small slave revolt on stage.
The scene ended with the revolt being declared a success and the curtain closing to end the first act. The actors left the stage and Destiny saw the director walking right up to her. Just before the director got close to destiny the gag expanded in her mouth, filling it and making it difficult to scream. On top of that she felt invisible wires pull her arms, legs and neck tight against the scaffold, with another wire pulling tight against her ribcage, forcing her to remain completely still and driving the breath out of her body so she couldn't scream against the enlarged gag.
"Your doing great Erica, how do you feel?" The director asked. Destiny at least took solace that she had been given a fake name. Out of nowhere a speaker hidden in the mask responded to the director.
"Thanks Imani, it's working out just like I planned." Destiny's eyes grew wide. Whoever was doing this to her was now literally speaking for her.
