August turned to September, and then to October. The days got a little shorter and the weather a little colder. It was, however, the Midwest, and there were pockets of hot days even as the leaves became a spectrum of reds and oranges. While kids settled into the routine of school, the adults looked forward to the cooler days and cozy nights that autumn and winter delivered.

Sam Murray had been finding himself the least depressed he had felt in a long time. In fact, he had been experiencing a blissful happiness that kept him energized and appreciative. There were moments when he thought that it was all a dream. But it seemed whenever he would think that, one or more of his partners reminded him how real their love was.

On a calm Saturday afternoon, they hung out at Sam's house, passing the time with conversation and playing with the kids. Stephanie Russo had brought her chocolate lab Maggie, who happily kept Nicole Hennigan's children entertained. Nicole and Stephanie watched Ben and Kaylee take turns throwing squeaky toys across the kitchen. Emily Brown and Kim Collins were upstairs; Kim was showing Emily some new clothes that she had purchased on sale, while Emily resigned as the audience that Kim found much satisfaction in having.

Meanwhile, Sam had joined Nick Collins in playing video games. They sat side by side in the lounge, controllers in hand, staring up at the large television. Sam was helping Nick complete a level in Halo.

"Back in college," said Sam, "my buddies and I would get together in a dorm room and play split screen multiplayer for hours on the weekend. The first Halo game came out while I was in school."

"You didn't just play online?"

"They didn't have it back then. Xbox live came out around the time of Halo 2, which was after we had graduated. We played it a little, but life started to get busy as we either got jobs or went to grad school." He took a deep inhale. "Jeez, that seems so long ago."

"Do you still talk to them?"

"Nah, not really. We kind of lost touch."

"At least you've got me to keep you company now."

Sam smiled at the eleven-year-old. "That's right."

Kim and Emily walked into the room. Sam paused the game.

"Hey!"

He unpaused it so Nick could keep playing while he turned toward the women. Kim wore a new white blouse and light blue jeans, complimented by a pair of dazzling silver pearls. Her light blonde hair was extra wavy. Emily wore black leggings and a seafoam green t-shirt, which looked good with her straightened strawberry blonde hair. Sam studied them from top to bottom, which made Kim blush and prompted Emily to wink.

"Lookin' good, ladies!"

Kim beamed and scuffled Nick's hair. Her son fumbled his controller to flatten it back down with a groan.

"Whatcha up to?" she asked.

"Sam's helping me beat a level in Halo," said Nick. Kim watched the screen for a moment. Nick shot at some aliens while they yelled in intelligible languages.

"That's violent. You think this is fun?"

"Yes."

She looked at Sam, who shrugged in agreement. The blonde shook her head.

"I'll never get it," she said. "Sam, can I borrow you?"

"Sure."

Nick frowned. Sam hesitated.

"I'll cover for you," said Emily. Sam handed her the controller; Nick failed to suppress his excitement at spending some time with the redhead.

Sam followed Kim upstairs. She questioned if she should be letting her son play video games like Halo.

"I think it's fine. I was playing games like that as a kid, and a lot of kids are now. At my age it was Doom. Also, research shows that video games don't make kids violent. I think as long as what he's playing isn't inappropriate or overly sexual like Grand Theft Auto, it's fine."

"Okay. I trust you, Sam."

They went into her bedroom. "I don't think now is the time for getting frisky," he said with a chuckle.

"No, I had something to show you," she said, though when she turned around, she immediately eyed his crotch. "Although..." She shook her head. "Nope, not now." Instead she reached into the closet and pulled out a box in gift wrapping, and she handed it to him.

"What's this for?"

"As a thank you for letting me and Nick live with you. You saved us from a bad place. Greg..."

"Kim, it has been my absolute pleasure. In more ways than one." He shifted his legs and bumped into her hip.

She swatted his arm lovingly. "Open your present, you horny animal."

Sam began unwrapping the gift, a wide smile on his face. His smile widened even more when he discovered its contents: a smart watch.

"No way!" he exclaimed, shredding off the remaining wrapping. "I've been wanting one of these! How did you know?"

"Stephanie mentioned that you'd been thinking of getting one. Looks like I beat you to it."

He gave her a tight hug, lifting her off of her feet. She squealed and struggled playfully until he gave her a firm kiss on the lips. She moaned through his lips, melting against his body. As the fire of the kiss simmered down, a heat in his pants prodded her leg.

"Mmm, what have we here?" she whispered.

"My present for you."

"I'll open it later. We have dinner to get to."

"Thank you for the gift," he said with a smile. He kissed her on her cheek, giving her a lasting smile.

"I'm the one thanking you, remember?"

Sam chuckled and patted her ass as they walked out of the bedroom and went downstairs to meet Stephanie, Nicole, and the kids in the kitchen. Maggie rushed over to greet him with a toy and a tail wag. Kim entered a moment later, drawing the dog's attention and kneeling down to pet her.

"How's it going?" Sam asked the group.

"I think the kids are getting hungry," said Nicole. She looked down and put a hand to her stomach. "I think I'M getting hungry!"

"We can probably head over a little early if you're ready."

They all agreed to do so. Sam went to the lounge to let Emily and Nick know. He found Nick laughing while Emily looked confused.

"I think he's killing me," she said.

Sam looked at Nick, who seemed to be enjoying himself. "I hate to end it," he said, "but we're gonna head out soon. Nick, you're in charge of Maggie. Make sure you take her out a couple of times."

"Will do."

Emily handed Nick the controller. "Thanks for letting me play." The boy grinned and blushed. She stood up and gave Sam an amused look when they were out of the room.

"Is there anyone that doesn't like you?" he asked.

"My twelfth-grade math teacher Mr. Weicht, my ex-best friend Bree, and I think Kaylee, to name a few."

Sam laughed. "Kaylee's four and shy, she doesn't count."

"Well, don't forget about the other two, and probably more."

"Whatever," he said, running a hand through her soft hair. "As long as you remember that I like you."

She closed her eyes and shivered as his fingers reached her ends. "You might have to remind me." He gave her a tender kiss, nibbling on her lower lip before pulling back at a teasingly slow pace. She cooed. "You're getting there."

"I owe you a full reminder later. We have to get going."

"Okay. But I get to choose how you remind me."

"Uh, remind me what I'm reminding you of?"

She squeezed the front of his pants. "I'll make sure you never forget, big guy."

He chuckled. "You've done that plenty of times."

They gathered in the foyer and got ready to go to dinner. Before heading out, Kim called out to Nick with a reminder to take Maggie out. After confirmation, they left the house. A brief autumn gust greeted them as they walked to the driveway. Sam drove Emily and Kim while Stephanie drove Nicole and her kids to their dinner destination, Red Robin. This evening was Nicole's choice, on behalf of Ben's wishes to go somewhere with crayons and fries.

This was the third Saturday since the beginning of the school year where the gang had gone out to dinner. They had decided to rotate who got to pick the destination. First, Sam had taken the ladies to a nice hibachi restaurant. Then, Stephanie had chosen a steakhouse in the city known for its quality meats. Emily was next in line after Nicole, and she had repeatedly foreshadowed McDonalds as a running joke. It was unclear to Sam if she would actually be picking the fast-food chain for her dinner choice.

Despite the relatively uneventful evening, Sam enjoyed it immensely. Spending time with the women and their kids had filled a void that previously haunted him. He had recently been feeling like a dad, helping Nick with homework one day and showing him how to mow the lawn the next, all while playing video games with him on the weekends. Other times, he took Ben and Kaylee to the park because recess did not seem to deplete their daily reserves of energy. And at the end of every day, there was a high chance that he would spend some quality time with one of the women he loved. It wasn't just sex, either. Sometimes they would fall asleep watching a movie or make each other laugh or just sit together in silence, content with each other's company. It was the little things that were making Sam feel like the happiest guy on Earth.

Their party was given a long table with a booth on one side and chairs on the other. The kids sat in the booth with Nicole and Stephanie while Sam and the other two sat in chairs. The waiter was a young man, maybe in his early twenties. He was a little awkward around the women, who were all looking as beautiful as ever. Sam couldn't blame him.

"I'll have a bacon cheeseburger," said Sam, placing his order last.

"Got it," said the waiter. They all thanked him as he went off.

Emily leaned inward. "Did you see his cheeks get all rosy when Kim asked for her salad?"

"He stuttered around Stephanie too," noted Kim

"Really? I didn't notice."

"You were too busy looking at Sam the whole time."

"I was wondering if he was going to order a pizza."

"I don't think they have that here."

"Careful- you'll get his appetite going."

Sam smiled and looked up thoughtfully. The women chuckled.

"How's work?" Emily asked Nicole.

"It's alright. It's nice to be making some money again, but something's bugging me."

"What?"

"I thought being a librarian would be kind of fun. I mean, I'm finally putting my degree to use... kind of. But it's just not as exciting as I'd expected."

"Maybe it's because it's a job," Stephanie suggested.

"I don't think so. I think I actually looked forward to Target more than this."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Maybe this job is kind of like a tease," said Sam. "It's closer to what you actually want to do, but not quite there, so it's unsatisfying."

"That makes sense..."

"So, what DO you want to do?" He asked. Nicole thought for a moment and then shook her head.

"I don't know... I don't know."

Sam placed his hand on the table, and she took it. "As great of a sexy librarian you are, there are lots of other opportunities for you. We'll figure it out. Don't worry. Maybe being a librarian will spark something soon?"

Nicole chuckled, her grin lingering. "Maybe. Thanks, Sam."

Sam smiled back, and the table was silent for a moment. It was an appreciative, supportive silence. Conversation soon resumed.

"So, what's going on with you?" Kim asked Stephanie, tapping her forearm. Stephanie scratched the back of her head; her long blonde hair was tied into a loose ponytail.

"Not much. Well, I guess there's this one thing. I dunno."

Everyone but the kids, who were busy coloring, leaned forward with raised eyebrows.

"Two guys came to the restaurant on Thursday. They, uh, seemed interested in buying it from me."

Everyone's eyes went wide. A couple mouths dropped.

"Really?" asked Nicole. "What did you say?"

"We had a short conversation, but I told them I wasn't selling."

Sam felt a bit of relief, but also some concern. "Steph, I love the restaurant- we all do- but haven't you been saying since I met you that you've been wanting to move on? Explore other opportunities?"

"She's been saying that for years," added Kim.

"I know what I've been saying, but... I can't just let it go. It's complicated. It's my family's restaurant. I practically grew up in that place."

"Was your mom a part of that conversation?" asked Sam.

"No, she wasn't working at the time... I haven't told her about it yet."

"What do you think she'd say?"

"I've always figured she'd be against it. But I'm actually not sure how she'd react."

"Have you ever asked?"

"I'm afraid to."

Sam scratched his beard. "Maybe you should at least have a conversation about it. You never know how it might go. The worst that can happen is she says she wants it to stay in the family. But look where Lauren's headed, studying computer science. Things can't stay the same forever."

Stephanie looked at him thoughtfully. "You're right. My mom is so passionate about food that I assumed she wouldn't want to even hear it. But who knows. I'll talk to her soon."

"And I'll be there to support you. Whatever you need, I'll help."

"We all will," said Nicole, grabbing Stephanie's hand. She smiled at them all appreciatively.

"You know, selling the restaurant might not even make a huge difference there," said Sam. "If we find the right person, they can continue the culture. You'll just be handing it off to them."

Stephanie smiled but said nothing. She clearly had some things to consider; they dropped the conversation.

Food arrived, and they practically dove in. Sam finished his burger first, wolfing it down before anyone else finished half of theirs. Ben and Kaylee had kid's meals, and Sam watched Nicole constantly dab a napkin at Kaylee's chin.

Talk drifted to the topic of autumn and winter. Ben told Sam that he wanted to dress up as Spiderman for Halloween. According to his mother, he'd recently developed a deep fascination for the hero.

"Oh!" she suddenly exclaimed. "How fun would it be to have a Halloween party! We could all dress up- we HAVE to dress up!"

"I like that idea," said Emily. "Could we invite some more friends? Might be more fun than just the five of us."

"No kids?" asked Nicole.

"Honey, I love your kids, but we need some adult-only time."

"Fair."

"What other friends do we have?" asked Sam, somewhat jokingly.

"Rose," said Emily. "And Josh."

"Amanda," added Kim. Stephanie rolled her eyes. "Also, Nick probably won't want to go out on Halloween. Maybe he can invite a couple friends over and they can play video games while we party. Their parents can come."

"What about no kids?" asked Nicole.

"Adolescents aren't as needy as the little ones. Is it fine to have Nick and some friends, Sam?"

"That's fine with me," said Sam. The other women agreed. "Nicole? Any friends?"

"I'm sure they'll all be trick-or-treating with their kids. I'll probably join them for a little before bringing Ben and Kaylee home and leaving them with a sitter so I can come to the party. So, just count me."

"Sounds good. Stephanie? Will Lauren be around?"

"I'm sure she and her friends will be at some college party, so I wouldn't count on it. But maybe a few of the Russo's employees might be good guests."

"You invite whoever you want," said Sam. He smiled excitedly. "This could be really fun!"

"How about we keep our costumes a secret?" suggested Emily. "We surprise each other at the party."

"I like that. How many weeks until Halloween?"

"Three and a half."

They continued to talk excitedly as they resumed eating the rest of their meals. Sam eventually drew quiet, content with listening to the women talk. When they were done eating, he asked for the bill and covered the group. There was a little protest, but that sort of thing had gone down. They had gotten accustomed to Sam's generosity over the past few months, but no less appreciative. They all thanked him with a loving kiss on the cheek, with a few whispers that promised a more thorough thanking later.

As they headed out, Nicole decided to head straight home with the kids. They said their goodbyes, and Sam took the other three women back to his place. When they arrived home, they were greeted by Maggie barking and wagging through the glass of the front door.

"Hey girl!" greeted Stephanie, dropping to her knees the moment they walked inside. They all gave Maggie a bit of attention before settling into the kitchen. Nick was in there eating a bowl of cereal.

"Did you take Maggie out?" Kim asked.

"Yeah, twice."

"Good!" She gave her son a tender squeeze, and he winced but smiled. "I see you're eating a balanced dinner."

"There's nothing wrong with a little Frosted Flakes."

"Mm hm. Just promise me you'll eat broccoli or something tomorrow."

"Sure."

Sam chuckled and bent down to pet Maggie, who had been licking his leg. Then she ran over to the door to the deck.

"She's got some energy! I think I'll take her out one more time, then head home," said Stephanie. She let Maggie out, and Sam followed the two of them outside.

"Getting chilly," he said. He hugged the blonde from behind, putting his face against her cheek. She made a small moan of appreciation and snuggled into him. Meanwhile, Maggie raced down the stairs and chased after a bird.

"Do you know what you do to me?"

"Nothing you don't do to me."

"You know, sometimes it's torture. Going home without you."

"Next week I'll spend the night."

"That would be wonderful."

"And tomorrow I'll come to Russo's for another one of those magical pizzas."

Stephanie kissed his cheek, and he kissed her back on the lips. They heard the door open, and Emily walked out.

"You two plotting something out here?" she asked.

Sam turned around, keeping Stephanie in his arms. "Just chatting."

"You hold her any tighter and you're gonna make me jealous."

"Of me or of Steph?"

Emily smirked and winked. Stephanie blushed, remembering the time all three of them got naked together in August.

"I'm gonna head out too," said Emily.

"Whatcha up to tonight?" he asked.

"Josh is coming over."

"Ah."

"Don't you start getting jealous."

Sam raised his hands. "You do what you want to do."

"Plus, you've got Kim to keep you satisfied."

"Hey, just because we live together doesn't mean we're having sex every night," he said in defense. Both Stephanie and Emily raised an eyebrow.

"You do realize that we talk to Kim, right?" said Stephanie. Sam rolled his eyes but grinned slightly.

"Anyway, you have fun tonight, Sam. I'll see you soon."

"Bye, Emily."

They kissed goodbye; their mouths lingered, and she pushed her body firmly against his, her breasts squished into his torso. Stephanie bit her lip watching them.

Emily left, and Stephanie went down to fetch the dog. Then they went back inside. The kitchen was empty, and Sam heard the television from the lounge.

"I'll see you tomorrow," he said, giving Stephanie a kiss. She tried to mimic Emily's force, and she did it well. He let out a soft sigh against her lips just before they broke apart.

"You sure know how to send someone off," she said with a happy exhale.

"It takes two to make a good kiss," he replied. She grinned and shook her head.

"You always know how to make me smile."

"I love you."

"I love you too." She gave him one more kiss on the cheek before leaving.

Sam walked into the lounge. Nick was back to playing Halo while Kim sat on the chair, looking at her phone.

"Sam, will you play again?"

Before he responded, Kim stood up and stared at him. He looked at Nick. "Maybe tomorrow, bud. I'm gonna get settled into bed."

"Okay," Nick said disappointedly. Sam considered playing a little just to spend some time with the boy, but Kim's sway as she walked past him sealed the deal. He followed the blonde upstairs, this time going to his bedroom instead of hers.

"I think Nick really wanted me to play with him," said Sam.

"But I really want you to play with me," she replied, then looked past him. "You think he knows what we're up to?"
