Jenny had to go into work for a meeting. It was something she didn't have to very often and tried to avoid if she could. Once in a while it was inevitable though.
Her office was in London. And even though the meeting wasn't until 11, she still had to get up stupidly early to get there on time.
It was late summer now, almost Autumn, and it was still dark when her alarm roused her reluctantly from her bed.
She dressed in the darkness, not wanting to disturb David. It was a pain having to put on office clothes again, when she was used to simply dressing for comfort.
When she had first started out in her career and had worked in an office full time, she had enjoyed dressing the part, feeling smart and sophisticated. But the feeling had soon palled, as had office life, and she had embraced the almost total lack of office time in her current job.
When she made it outside, the sun was just coming up and the streets were deserted. She was dreading the day ahead but there was always a slightly special feeling about being up alone in an otherwise deserted world.
The sun just peeped it's brilliant head above a nearby building in a pink, dreamy sky. It was going to be a glorious day.
She had to change trains at Oxford. She was just getting herself a coffee when her phone beeped.
It was her boss. Something had come up. The meeting was cancelled.
Brilliant, she thought. Why couldn't he have told her this last night and spared her the early start.
Still, it meant she didn't have to go to the meeting, and that could only be a good thing. What to do now though?
She thought about just going to London anyway. She had a ticket, paid for by the company, why not just have a day out? Go shopping, see the sights.
Except that she didn't really enjoy shopping all that much. And having lived in London for a few years wasn't all that bothered about the sights. Most of her friends had moved away and those who hadn't would all be working.
No, aimlessly traipsing around London didn't hold much appeal. Much better just to cut her losses and go home. She could get changed, go back to bed for some more rest. Maybe even go and see Laura.
Yes, much better just to get the next train back home.
When she finally reached her own front door again, Jenny opened it and called out, "David?"
There was no response. Not surprising really as he was would be at work. She made herself a cup of tea and then went upstairs to get changed. She had dressed formally for her meeting and was very keen to get into her usual comfy clothes as soon as possible.
