CHAPTER 2: INTERLUDE
The next day was Thursday, everyone went about their daily business. The couples didn't have plans to see each other that night, but that didn't keep Kate from playfully sticking her tongue out at Amy every time they passed in the hallway that morning, taking care to do it quickly and so only Amy could see. Lunch time came, and Kate sat down at the table Amy had taken, sitting without comment in the chair next to Amy's instead of the one across the table. Others might have thought that strange, but sometimes doctors did need to discuss things quietly so no one overheard patient-oriented conversation. They'd both chosen the Caesar salad bowl.
They began eating in silence. Both knew the other was trying to think of what to say to the other. Finally, Amy couldn't stand the awkwardness.
"I'll just ask it, Kate," Amy began, "Are you... are we... ok with last night?"
Kate sat her fork down in her bowl and finished munching her romaine. She looked at the table for a brief second, then up to Amy's eyes.
"Amy, you and I have a certain... history... that I believe only you and I know. I consider what happened last night to be a continuation of the story we started in med school. The next chapter of our book, so to speak. You ask me if I'm ok with last night - my answer is an emphatic, an ecstatic, a joyful 'YES!' I feel like it was something that was fated to happen eventually. The dynamic between the four of us, the things you and I have experienced together, the way our husbands look at both of us when they think we can't tell..."
