CHAPTER 2: INTERLUDE

The next day was Thursday, everyone went about their daily business. The couples didn't have plans to see each other that night, but that didn't keep Kate from playfully sticking her tongue out at Amy every time they passed in the hallway that morning, taking care to do it quickly and so only Amy could see. Lunch time came, and Kate sat down at the table Amy had taken, sitting without comment in the chair next to Amy's instead of the one across the table. Others might have thought that strange, but sometimes doctors did need to discuss things quietly so no one overheard patient-oriented conversation. They'd both chosen the Caesar salad bowl.

They began eating in silence. Both knew the other was trying to think of what to say to the other. Finally, Amy couldn't stand the awkwardness.

"I'll just ask it, Kate," Amy began, "Are you... are we... ok with last night?"

Kate sat her fork down in her bowl and finished munching her romaine. She looked at the table for a brief second, then up to Amy's eyes.

"Amy, you and I have a certain... history... that I believe only you and I know. I consider what happened last night to be a continuation of the story we started in med school. The next chapter of our book, so to speak. You ask me if I'm ok with last night - my answer is an emphatic, an ecstatic, a joyful 'YES!' I feel like it was something that was fated to happen eventually. The dynamic between the four of us, the things you and I have experienced together, the way our husbands look at both of us when they think we can't tell..."

Kate continued, "I doubt there are more than a handful of married couple pairs in the world that could make this work long term. But," she leaned her head in toward Amy, "I think we are in that handful."

Kate gave her a smile and tingled when Amy returned it warmly.

She started again, "The second part of your question was whether 'we' are ok with it. You have my part of that answer, you will need to supply the second part."

Amy turned her head and stared blankly at the cafeteria door. She collected her thoughts for a moment while Kate went back to her salad and eyed Amy innocently with a sideways glance.

Peering at her, Kate could read in her body language the instant she came to a decision. Amy turned her head back to look again directly into Kate's eyes. "Fuck it, I'll just say it," Amy murmured in a low voice. "What happened last night is something I didn't know how desperately I wanted until I was in the middle of it. Holding your hand while we both came on our husbands' faces was... magical... for me. It was almost like all four of us were having sex with each other. I know the guys wouldn't like to hear it put that way, but... I sort of dream about some way that I could have sex with all three of you at once."

"I'll put some thought into that, Amy, but I think you already know the answer. Think about it and we'll discuss it later.

"But tomorrow, it's the boys turn to get tested! I have an idea about that, what do you think of..."

They had a lively debate about their plans for the next night, and a couple of ways they could push things to the next level.

As their lunch hour ended, Amy smiled at Kate with that perfect smile that made her all tingly. "We're on a journey here Kate, and I can't imagine three better companions. I have this... warmth... inside me all the time lately. You and I do have our history, and we'll need to explain it to the boys before long. Am I right to think that you and I will... resume... what began in the resident call room?" She looked at Kate a little apprehensively.

Kate smiled warmly. "You always could read my mind. I'd give you a hug if people weren't around."

"Fuck 'em, hug it out bitch."

The both reached out and shared an embrace, Kate's shoulders shaking with laughter at her friend's comment. Amy suppressed a smile over Kate's shoulder. Both women's eyes were welling up with tears. To an observer in the cafeteria, it was just two women comforting each other over some shared emotion. It could have been grief, it could have been the joy of a pregnancy, anything. Hospitals are places where emotions sometimes run high, even for the medical professionals. Several people saw, but none of them gave it a second thought.
