KHALED
This is the second time Khaled bin Hamad Al Thani aka Khaled was visiting India in last three months which was unusual for him. Sitting in his suite room at Surat Mariott, he was impatient and full of anxiety to see his garment supplier who has been frequently missing the timelines in shipping the consignments to Doha from where Khaled operated his business in the countries of Middle East and North Africa.
It was almost eight years ago that he first visited India when he was part of the business delegation accompanying His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the then Amir of Qatar. It was during one such meeting of the delegation with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) that he had got the lead to source his textiles from Surat, known as the "embroidery capital of India". He had to review many proposals before he zeroed in onto Sandeep Aggarwal, the proprietor of Darpan Textiles who became his steady supplier of textile products like Abaya, Kaftan, Burqah, Keffiyeh and even the undergarments. All that Khaled had to do was to send the designs and the kind of fabric required for these products and his supplier would match the expectation close to perfection. The result was that his brand's market reputation and market share from the garment business had increased manifold apart from the perennial and steady source of income from petrochemical business.
Allah! This Qafir has been playing all the pranks for last 6 months. Even though he had given more than a Million USD in advance to Sandeep, he has been often breaching the promised timelines due to which his stores had started reporting short supplies and complaints by the loyal customers. It was not possible to substitute the supplier without a short disruption in operation. Moreover, his previous experience with the Bangladeshi suppliers was not so pleasant in terms of quality and perfection of work. The delay had started seriously eroding the goodwill and reputation of his brand. I will not allow this to happen, this Qafir cannot spoil my reputation that I built against all the odds, thought Khaled.
Khaled was accustomed to surmounting the odds right from his childhood. He and his siblings were always considered half royal blood by his relatives in Doha and they did not have many of the privileges of the royal family. That was so because his father, who was a senior military officer in Sudanese Army and Deputy Ambassador in Qatar, got married to his mother who belonged to Al Thani Family, the ruling family of Qatar, with origins tracing back to the Adnanite Banu Tamim tribe. This marriage was more for the political consideration than anything. Else, his dark-skinned father of African origin was no natural choice for his blue-blooded beautiful mother. To compensate the situation, his paternal grandfather had given away an oil field and Qatary Riyal 45 million to his mother apart from bestowing the Al Thani title on the kids. Even though Khaled's father would go back to Sudan and occasionally visit Qatar, his mother and kids remained in Doha.
Later, Khaled's father had introduced (only) him to his clan, the Toposa tribe to which his ancestor belonged from South Sudan. Toposa are the warrior tribe and most feared among people of this part of the world. Agriculture and animals are the two means of livelihood for them, and Khaled's father had inherited the vast tract of land. Even though his father had married a woman outside the community, Khaled was accepted by the clan because he resembled to Toposa men by his height, built, skin colour and most importantly, the hair. His father bequeathed the inheritance in favour of Khaled. On the other hand, Khaled has also lived up to the wishes of his father and remained stay connected with his community.
While his other siblings did not pursue the higher education, Khaled managed to do so. Unlike his two brothers, he got into trading of petrochemicals and established his brand with sheer hard work and professionalism which is rare due to easy money from oil economy. Not only did he manage to buy a huge mansion in the same royal enclave where other families of the Al Thane clan lived in Doha, he bought huge tracts of land in the beach city of Umm Bab and made another mansion in the middle of this private property. No wonder, he caught attention of the Amir and became member of business advisory boards and the industry bodies. He also participated in the soft diplomacy between the state of Qatar and Sudan.
