David, Piper & Emily
It was Friday afternoon and David Walker arrived home after a long and tiring week.
As soon as he entered the house, he was accosted by his 18-year-old daughter, Emily. She had her deadly serious face on. "Dad, we need to talk."
"Sure,
Baby Cheeks
, can I get changed?"
"Yep, I'll grab you a beer."
David came back a few minutes later and settled into "his" chair in front of the TV. Emily returned with the beer and sat on the coffee table directly in front of him.
"Dad, I've got some really bad news but I know I'm doing the right thing by telling you. Mom's cheating on you."
"Cheating on me! Are you sure?"
"Yep Dad, 100%. Vikki discovered her yesterday."
Vikki Welch is Emily's "
bestie
" and they are thick as thieves. They grew up together and are now both attending Northwestern University.
"Dad, as you know, Vikki is doing a Business Management degree and as part of her studies, she has a cadetship with the
Comfort Inn
motel chain. She does back-office admin work. Anyway, recently, she's been rostered at the
Comfort Inn
at the airport. The admin office also accommodates the security guy with his surveillance cameras. There's a large TV screen in the office which covers the motel vestibule. Yesterday, morning, around 11:00, Vikki saw Mom enter the motel and head straight to the elevators.
"Vikki thought this was strange and asked Eric, the security guy, if he could find out where she went. He was able to see that Mom took the elevator to the 8
th
floor and after knocking, was let in to room 815. She remained there for three hours before leaving alone. Eric gave Vikki these time and date-stamped photos. She was wearing sunglasses but as you can see, it's definitely her. I even recognised her dress.
"Vikki was then able to find out from reception who was occupying room 815. It was a guy named Randall Hughes. His loyalty card details said that he lives here in Cedarville. He's an insurance assessor. He's a regular at the motel. Every Thursday morning for the past 6 months, he checks-in around 10:30 and checks out after lunch.
"The surveillance tapes are only kept for a month, but Eric was able to get photos of Mom visiting Randall's room each Thursday, regular as clockwork on 3 previous occasions. Here are the photos.
"Vikki asked the receptionist to place a "flag" on Randall Hughes so she would know when he made his next booking.
"Sorry, Dad."
"It's not your fault, Em. It's a lot to digest," David said with a sad look.
He then seemed to gather his composure a little and asked, "Have you had any thoughts about "where to from here"?"
"Mom will be home shortly and I think we should play it cool over the weekend until you've figured out what to do. I'll try and stick close by - but not too close. I'm sure you've got lots of stuff to do in the yard and you always like to spend "quality time" with that 4-wheeled "rust-bucket" in the garage.
"Careful, Emily Walker! You're treading on thin ice. That rust bucket is my pride and joy," David said with a mock stern tone.
"Dad, maybe you can dust off your Nike's and we can go for a run or two. You'll have to "tough it out" in bed with her."
"After 24 years, I thought we had a great marriage. I thought she was happy with me," David said more to himself than his daughter.
"Dad, who knows what her motivations are. Maybe things will become clearer soon."
"All of a sudden, I'm glad I agreed to the prenup that Piper's dad twisted my arm to sign. I think there's even a standard fidelity clause in it somewhere. I'll need to dig it out at some stage."
"Dad, how about a BBQ tonight followed by a movie? I'll come to the shops with you if we need provisions."
"OK, Em. Thanks for staying close."
Emily got up from the coffee table and sat on her Father's lap. "That's what loving daughters do. Maybe you could have a quiet word to Grandpa Mike?"
Mike Walker is David's Dad and they are very close. He's a retired accountant who remains well-connected in the accounting and related professions.
"Good idea, Em. Maybe he'll have a mechanical emergency that requires my attention."
"Dad, what is it with old guys and their beloved clunkers?"
"Baby, you wouldn't understand. I'll call Dad and see if I can tee-up a visit."
Just then, David and Emily heard the garage door open.
"Showtime!" Emily said with a weak smile and a big hug.
"Well, look at this, my favourite daughter and my favourite husband waiting for me after I've survived another gruelling week in the insurance brokerage business," Piper Walker said as she breezed into the house.
"Hi Mom, I just got Dad a beer. Would you like a tipple before dinner?"
"That'd be nice thanks, Baby. I'll get changed and be back in a minute." She kissed her husband and went to their bedroom.
Piper returned and threw herself onto the lounge. Emily gave her a glass of wine.
"Dad and I were thinking about a BBQ for dinner. What do you think?"
"BBQ sounds great but do we have any steaks?"
"Dad's going to run me up to the shop to grab steaks and crusty rolls."
"Yum! I'll guard the house while you're away."
On the way to the shop, David rang his Dad, "Hi Dad, how's things?"
"Living the dream Son, living the dream. What are you up to?"
"Just heading to the shops with Em to get some dinner."
"Hi, Grandpa!" Emily yelled.
"Hi, Munchkin. Is your old man looking after you?"
"Yes Sir, I don't deserve him."
"Dad, I'm hoping to have a quiet Father / Son chat tomorrow if possible. What are my chances?"
"No problems. How's 10.30? Your mother will be at Pilates until lunchtime. While you're here, maybe you can explain to me what "Pilates" is."
"Sounds good, see you then."
Emily smiled. "Good on you Dad. Let's hope everything is as easy as that."
Emily and David returned with their provisions. David fired up the BBQ while Emily and Piper prepared a salad and set the places at the island bench in the kitchen, as was the family tradition.
The dinner was fine and the movie was watched. During an intermission, Emily asked her Dad if they could go for a run in the morning. David pretended to complain and reluctantly agreed to "around the park at 7:30 and the loser makes the breakfast."
Piper jumped in saying that either way she was a winner because someone was going to make breakfast for her.
David mentioned that he had to visit his Dad at around 10.30 to discuss "carburation".
Piper laughed and observed that "the apple didn't fall far from the tree".
"Piper, your father-in-law and I are both "motor vehicle enthusiasts". Tomorrow, I'll be blessing him with my wisdom. Perhaps you should come."
"Sweety, go and have fun with your Dad and us girls will see you back here for lunch."
As promised, David and Emily went for their run the following morning - leaving Piper curled up in bed.
Half way through the run, Father and Daughter sat on a bench.
"How are you feeling Dad?"
"I think I'm about to have a heart attack!"
"No Dad! I'm talking about the other stuff."
"Yeah,
