Serendipity can be one of the most wonderful forces in this world. This was all the more apparent on my last trek. One gorgeous sunny day, I was jogging on dirt path in one of my areas. I could smell the blue bonnets as their dark shade painted a stark contrast to the light blue above. I had slept well the night before, was highly productive in the morning, and I knew I was in for a great jog late that afternoon. Soon the sky turned orangish as the sun started to make a turn towards dusk. I was about to run up a hill when suddenly a woman had run toward me. She was a brunette with chiseled cheekbones, wearing a tank top with leggings.
"Don't you know this is private property?"
"What? No, it's not. I've been here several times and have never seen any signs."
"Yeah, I just bought this land here."
"It's yours?"
"Sure is. But I don't want to be terrible newcomer."
She slowed down to a stop and I stopped as well, out of kindness.
"You look like you run quite a bit."
"I do."
"How about this. You and I race to the top of the hill where that oak tree is. If you win, I'll let you run on my property anytime you want. In fact, since I'm a good host, I'll give you a 10 second head start."
I've always been humble, but would be lying if I didn't have a competitive spirit. Years of cross country racing, basketball, and biking only fueled that. I didn't want to give up my favorite spot either.
