Anna almost did a spit take. With trembling hand, she hurriedly put down her cup of coffee before she dropped it and looked incredulously at her partner. "What?" she said.
Theo just looked at her with her usual, maddening, all-knowing smile. "You heard me," she said.
Anna had but she couldn't believe it. She also couldn't believe that Theo would say that in public. She hadn't yelled it, in fact she'd kept her voice rather low, but still. Anna looked around worriedly to see if anyone else in the cafΓ© had heard them, but it didn't appear so. Luckily no one else was seated near them and the street traffic prevented easy eavesdropping. If anyone had overheard, they were doing a good job of pretending otherwise.
"That's not funny," Anna said, taking another sip of coffee.
"I'm not joking," Theo answered.
Anna fought the urge to slam her cup down on the table. "You can't be serious."
"I am."
"You can't mean it."
"I do."
"Then the answer is no," Anna hissed through closed teeth. "Not now, not ever."
"C'mon."
"I said no."
"Say yes instead." Anna could almost hear the laugh in Theo's voice.
"This isn't funny."
"Just think about it," Theo said. Her smile hadn't slipped a bit.
"No," Anna said, "and screw you for asking." She hurriedly finished off her coffee and took a last bite of her croissant. "I'm ready to go. What's up first this morning?"
"I thought we'd take the boat tour first. Supposed to get cloudy this afternoon."
"Fine, let's go."
It was a fine day in the city as Anna and Theo walked from the cafΓ© to the riverside. It was still somewhat early in the morning, but the streets were crowded all the same. It was fairly easy to tell the tourists from the natives. The tourists were generally smiling, taking photos, pointing out various sights to their partner or families. The natives were generally frowning, ignoring everything around them except the tourists that they had to keep avoiding as they hustled to wherever their jobs were.
Anna stewed about Theo's request during the walk, as they got their tickets at the dock, and as they took their seats on the boat. On the one hand, she wasn't too surprised that Theo had brought it up. She'd hinted at it before from time to time, hints that Theo had found funny and Anna had done her best to ignore. And Theo certainly didn't have any reservations. About anything. But even so, Anna was still surprised, even a little shocked. She'd never thought Theo would really go there.
They sat in the back of the boat, a few rows away from the other tourists and the tour guide. Theo had her arm around Anna's shoulders as usual. Anna tried to concentrate on what the tour guide was saying as the boat sailed languidly down the river, but her mind kept churning over Theo's words. She couldn't stop thinking about it.
"God, I can't believe you said that earlier," Anna said, keeping her gaze firmly on the water and not on her partner.
"I don't know why not."
"Even if I wanted to -- which I most certainly don't -- it's not like we can. We didn't bring anything like that with us and we're not going to buy anything like that on vacation."
"Oh, I already took care of that. I brought one in my case."
"You did?"
"Yeah, bought a proper one just before we left, just for the occasion."
It took a moment for the realization to fully dawn on Anna and when it did she spun around in her seat. "Wait a minute," Anna said, "you bought one already?"
"Yeah."
"You bought one already and brought it with you ... before you'd even asked me?"
"Yeah," Theo said, grinning.
"God damn you!" Anna said. She didn't care anymore if she was overheard or not. "That's just like you! You always do whatever you want, however you please, and I have to always go along with it. And when I don't want to, you push, push, push until you get your way. I'm sick of it. I told you no and I meant it. Not as in maybe later, not as in I'll think about it, no as in no." She got up, slid past Theo, and sat a couple of rows away from her. Theo didn't follow her, instead they spent the rest of the boat tour sitting apart. After it was over and they were docked again, though, Anna resumed her place at Theo's side, as she usually did.
