Second Sight Chapter 10
That Friday most of the campus emptied out. Many people were going home. Quite a few were heading for the warmer climes of Florida and Texas. A few lucky ones were flying to St. Somewhere in the Caribbean. Nancy and Maura were staying put for the week. As it turns, out so was Kimberly. She was not about to go back to her hometown where Brent was one of the "in crowd" and she would have been subject to all sorts of hateful talk. Plus, she had a lot on her mind.
With the campus practically empty, the main dining halls were closed and Nancy and Maura had to go to the Student Union to get dinner. They knocked on Kimberly's door, but she did not answer. Finally, they walked over on their own.
The library was still open and the next day, Nancy had to go and spend the better part of her time there. She and Maura went to a late breakfast at the Student Union and then Nancy walked to the library while Maura walked back to their dorm. Maura was just sitting on the bed, listening to music with the door wide open. "
What the heck, almost no one is around
." she thought.
Eventually there was a knock on the door and Kimberly was standing in the hallway looking in.
"Hey, Kimmy. How ya doin'?"
"Is Nancy here?"
"Nope. She's actually at the library. Such a dedicated student. Can I help at all?"
"Well, I kind of wanted to talk to you both, but would it be okay if I came in and talked to you for a while?"
"Sure Kimmy. Come on in." Maura turned off the music and moved on the bed. Maura clearly made room on the bed for Kimberly, but she chose to sit in one of the desk chairs.
"You've known that Maria is a porn star, haven't you?"
"Yes Kimmy. I know and Nancy knows."
"How did you find out?"
"Well, that's a bit of a story Kimmy."
"I have time if you want to tell me?"
"Okay well, first, do you watch porn Kimmy?"
"No."
"Well, neither had Nancy or me. But when we first got together, we had never even thought of having sex with another girl and we didn't know what to do. I found this website that had videos and I watched a few to try to get ideas.
"So, they had these two actresses and one was a redhead and one was blond and so I started watching them and I got Nancy to watch them with me. This is like winter break our freshman year. So anyway, we liked them so much I signed up for the site and we could start watching all their movies and their newer releases. They started including this hot Latina babe with the redhead and the blond."
"Alexis Vegas?"
"Alexis Vegas. So, we come back for the spring semester and there is a new person in the dorm."
"Alexis Vegas."
"Well, we didn't know that at the time. The RA says it is a girl named Maria Ruiz. But when we first saw her, boy she sure looked like Alexis Vegas. And so, Nance and I - mostly me - went back and watched a bunch of Alexis Vegas movies to see if it was her.
"You already heard the story about how we became friends and then we became more than friends the other night. And by the end of that semester, we stopped thinking or even caring if Maria was Alexis Vegas. In fact, by that time she had convinced us she wasn't.
"But what you probably don't know is that during that summer, Maria got her production company to do a series of shows that was loosely based on Nance and me. And then Maria joining us. It wasn't exactly the same but it was close enough to make us start to wonder again, could Maria be Alexis Vegas? When we came back last fall, we confronted her about it and she finally told us the whole truth."
"And it didn't bother you that she lied to you about it?"
"No, I get it. She doesn't need the attention here. Remember that one girl at that school in North Carolina? Maria didn't want any of that. Actually, at first, I was very turned on by the idea that I was having sex with a porn star. And in some ways, I think that rubbed Maria the wrong way. She never complained at all, but one day she something very profound, a porn star was what she did, it was not who she was.
"And I had to think about that. I realized how much I felt for Maria, not as a porn star, but as a person and a friend. I don't love Alexis Vegas; I love Maria Ruiz. So does Nancy. And I think if you are honest with yourself Kimmy, so do you."
As Maura had been speaking about her feelings for Maria, Kimberly had looked down. But this last sentence brought her eyes back up to Maura.
"But what if I don't want her to be a porn star?"
"She'll give it up. In fact, she was already going to give it up. She told her friends out in LA she was not going to come this week. But when they reminded her about things that were already in place and how many people would get hurt financially and professionally if she just didn't show up, she had to go. But she is going to tell people she is getting out of the business. It's a shame too because her career was about to skyrocket."
"Well, I don't want to do that to her?"
"You're not doing it
to
her Kimmy. She is doing it
for
you. And that is a very important difference. Don't doubt for a second that Maria loves Nance and me very much, she does. But in the end, her dreams in the industry were going to take her away from us. I have no doubt about that. As strong as that love is, it was not going to be strong enough to keep her with us. But she's willing to give all that up for you.
"It's not just that she loves you Kimmy. She loves you so much that she is willingly giving up her dreams on the hope that you will love her back."
"I don't want to be the one to take that from her. She'll grow to resent me." Kimberly was beginning to get teary-eyed.
Maura smiled at her and said, "No Kimmy. You're not taking anything. She's offering it up to you as a sacrifice. She wants you to know that you are the most important thing in the world to her. And she will do anything to get you to take her as your own."
"That's a lot of power to have over someone."
"It is. But if you love them back, would you ever misuse that power?" Maura paused to let that sink it. Then she continued, "She's giving it to you because she thinks you'll use that power to make things great for both of you. So, what's it gonna be Kimmy?"
Kimberly went silent and was clearly deep in thought about what Maura had just said. Maura got up off the bed and went to her own desk. She grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and started writing something down.
When she finished writing, Maura handed the paper to Kimberly. "What's this?" Kimberly asked.
"It's the website and the login information for my account for the company Maria works for. Go through and watch some of her scenes and see what it is that she does. But just keep it in the back of your mind, it's what she does, it's not who she is."
Kimberly went back to her room and Nancy and Maura did not see her until dinnertime the following day. At that time, they all went to the Student Union for dinner, but the talk in that public area was mostly about school. However, on the walk back to the dorm, Kimberly final changed the subject.
"I watched all of Maria's movies. They were incredibly sexy and erotic. Do you think she would do all of those things with me?"
