The Story
"Miss Larson?"
"Yes?" Grace Larson looked up from her computer, just responding to an email from a prospective mother interested in adopting. She was a twenty-five year old social worker at a large orphanage, and being adopted herself, very late when she had turned eighteen, she had a lot of sympathy for the older girls left under the orphanage's care who had grown up there, but if not adopted soon, would be left to pretty much fend for themselves.
"Mikaela is crying again..." Amber, one of the eighteen year old orphans, rolled her eyes.
"Okay, I'll come talk to her." Grace said, locking her computer screen then following the teen.
Mikaela was sat on the floor, outside of the common room for the older girls, sobbing with Chrissy half-heartedly patting her on the back. She was eighteen also, and had a reputation for crying at just about anything, which meant most of the other girls and staff had grown fed up with comforting her. This disposition had also perhaps been the reason she had not been adopted, as potential parents couldn't put up with her crying over just about anything.
Seeing Grace approach, Chrissy got up and returned to the common room with Amber, leaving the social worker alone with the crying girl.
Mikaela was an attractive girl, with pale skin contrasting with her sleek black hair and dark brown eyes. Her mouth was wide with puffy lips, especially her bottom one, that were pinkish, and her cheeks also had a blushing complexion. Grace wasn't sure whether this slight puffiness and pinkishness was due to the girl's regular tears, dilating the blood vessels around her face with increased blood flow, or if it was just how she looked naturally anyway but regardless the affect was quite pretty.
"What's the matter Mikey?" Grace asked, sitting down besides the girl and putting her arm around her shoulders. She narrowly avoided saying 'what's the matter now' but realised that the 'now' would probably be interpreted by Mikaela as meaning she was a reoccurring annoyance, which would just make her cry even more. Mikey was a nickname she had given the girl, as Grace felt it might be something the teen would find affectionate and comforting.
"I just know I'll be kicked out soon, and not sure how I'll get by alone!" Mikaela sniffled. When girls reached eighteen at the orphanage, they unofficially became considered by most of the staff as 'no-hopers' but Grace, having been a no-hoper herself, gave most of her attention to these girls and had made it her personal mission to find them all homes.
"I am sure you'll get by just fine, you are an adult now remember? And we'll make sure to get you a job somewhere so you will start off on your feet in the world." Grace said, wanting to comfort but also be practical, though saw that the girl didn't want to hear this so changed tack. "But you might not even need to worry about that as I am doing my very best to find you a home before you have to leave us..."
"But no one has ever wanted me all the years I've been here so why should someone adopt me now!" Mikaela sobbed.
"It's just a matter of finding the right person... you'll be someone's dream daughter and I am really doing my best to find that person for you!" Grace reassured, wishing she could guarantee to the teen. However though she couldn't make promises, Grace was truthfully doing her upmost to find homes for all the no-hopers. "I found great homes for Cassidy, Colina, Alix, and Madi, so perhaps you'll be next!"
"But there are still so many more of us left... and I'm probably the least desirable." Mikaela said, as despite the unexpected success that Grace had in housing four of the no-hopers since committing to helping them, there were still many more of them left at the orphanage.
"Shush, you are desirable. Somebody will just love having a daughter as sensitive as you."
"Not true, they'll think I'm an annoying cry-baby!"
"Aww Mikey, no they won't. Anyway, don't you have faith in me doing my job?" Grace said, trying to cheerfully tease the girl.
"I'm sorry Miss Larson, I must be sounding like such a brat. I didn't mean to suggest you aren't good at your job!" Mikaela began sobbing again, thinking she had insulted her social worker. Grace sighed to herself, and comfortingly squeezed the girl, thinking it might take a while to stop her crying. She was currently finalising for Bibi to be adopted, being what she was emailing about before she was interrupted, but the woman thought that cry-baby Mikey should probably be the next priority... after all, if she didn't have to comfort the teary-eyed teen so much, she'd have more time to spend searching for potential parents for the other 'no-hopers'.

Mikaela got out the taxi and carried her bag to the front door of No. 5 Lavender Lane, which was a large detached house in a wealthy suburb, and the kind of home and neighbourhood that the teen had dreamed of living in. She was dressed in a white vest and a black and white striped pleated skirt, wanting to look pretty when meeting her new mom.
The girl couldn't quite believe how swiftly Miss Larson worked, as it was just a little over a week since she had been crying in the corridor, and despite her social worker's reassurances and her own awareness that she was being a little selfish, she had lost even more hope when Bibi and Renate were found homes before her, so had been surprised when she was told that she'll be moving in with her adoptive mother on Saturday!
Grace had kept to her plan of prioritising the girl, though the next woman she found who was interested in adopting was a tattoo artist and piercer, who wanted a daughter who'd be into those things too which the social worker know Mikaela, who had such a low pain tolerance that she cried when she got a splinter and had always required suppositories for vaccines as she couldn't handle the sight of a needle, would not be suitable for so she had offered the woman Renate instead.
However the next woman she had spoken to wanted a 'little lamb' to mother and protect which sounded perfect for Mikaela so Grace had shown the woman the girl's file and explained her teary temperament, and had been delighted when the woman agreed the teen seemed exactly what she was looking for!
