Chapter 2: Generosity

This is a work of FICTION, made by and for adults 18+. The following chapter includes depictions of hypersexuality, mentions of abuse (disownment, rape), shaming (childfree, sterility, promiscuity), and unintentional misgendering. Reader discretion is advised.

The tall figure's skin was as white as snow, though her black dress covered most of it; her hair was just as dark while the straight strands nearly reached the floor. '

Oh,

wow

,'

Vixen gawked at her piercing violet eyes. 'SHE'S--

prett--'

"OH!" the bartender cheered. "Hel

lo

, Sol

ar

is! You're back

already

?!"

"Hello, Selena," Solaris set her wide cap on the bar and took a seat. "Yes, the other shops I want to visit were already closed. I'll have to try again closer to sunrise tomorrow."

"That's a shame. Well, if it means I can see you for another night or two, I can't complain on your behalf.

So

, whatΚΌll it be?"

"Just a glass of wine for me."

"Same as usual?"

"You're a

darling

, Selena.

And

," Solaris leered at Vixen, "for our

stranger

--"

"Uh," Vixen balked, "I-- don't have anything to--"

Solaris pulled a silvery ring out of thin air and offered it to Selena. "Will this do for our stranger?"

"

OH!

" Selena cheered. "This is

lovely

, Sol

ar

is!" She slipped it onto a finger. "And it's

my size

.

Thank

you, sis. Of

course

, it will do. What will it be, dear?"

Vixen could still only gawk. "I-- Well, what--"

"Let her hold your hand." She glanced at Solaris. "Selena's

very

good at reading someone's tastes."

"

Oh

,

don't

," Selena sheepishly waved. "But, they're right."

Her tail fur stood on end. '

Oh, shit.'

"If I touch you, I can get a good idea of what would taste good to you." She shrugged, "It's uncanny," then reached out, "but it works." With a gulp, Vixen gently grasped her hand. Selena soon hummed, "I

think

I know what would taste good. It's a shame, though; you haven't been able to try very many foods.

Hope

fully I can change that! A friend of sis is a friend of mine."

Before Vixen could be taken aback, Solaris announced, "So, stranger. I've paid for your food and board, you've listened to me and my sister banter, but I can't say I've heard anything about you, nor have I received anything for my

generosity

."

"O-

oh

," Vixen squirmed, "well, I-- can't offer anything--"

"You can offer me your story." Solaris flourished their hand; from a bluish glow, tall cards backed with intricate moon-like illustrations stacked themselves into their palm. "I'm clairvoyant, you see. By reading my cards, I can learn many things about someone. Their past, their present, even hints of their future--if the cards wish for it."

Vixen stared in bewilderment. "If the cards--

wish

for it?"

"It's uncanny," they smirked as a sizable deck finished forming, "but it works. Or, at least it has since I was little. When I came into my magic and first tried to create something, I made these cards. I didn't really know what to do with them until I shuffled them." Solaris demonstrated. "

Then

, if there was something I wanted to know, I could understand what the cards were trying to say. And

then

, when someone

else

shuffled them, I understood what the cards were saying about

them

; often general things, but sometimes I can learn things they hadn't told me or they'd kept hidden; in some cases, things they didn't know themselves--not until they looked deeper into their lives and learned my cards read true." They handed the deck to Vixen. "Would you add your energy to the cards so I may learn of what brought you here?"

"Add my-- But, I can't perform magic."

"You still have energy, though." She perked up. "That's what we immortals are: energy given form.

Magical

; if you want to be romantic. It doesn't matter if you can

perform

magic--most kin can't anyway; just by putting your energy into the cards, you influence

their

magic."

'

Wait,'

Vixen's tail swayed, '

I'M MAGICAL?!

I didn't even

know

!'

Her elation faded as she realized, "Wait-- if most kin can't perform magic to make things... how do we barter?"

"Well, I can't say many kin visit my shop in Quies, but--for those who can't use creation magic or have limited magical abilities--I offer to read their cards like I'm offering now. Selena?"

Their sister perked up, "Well, I can't say

I

get very many kin customers

either

, but

most

offer something they've made by hand--like your necklace. Others offer their services, like cleaning up; but, honestly, more energy is what I really need." Selena pointed out an abandoned mug on the bar; the sudden disappearance of its foamy contents made Vixen flinch, but she jumped as it slid to Selena. "I made everything in this room my

self

, so as long as customers don't con

sume

the things I made recently, I can take the energy back.

"

Most

of the time, my customers consume

my

energy and I don't get it back; so, I need more energy. This necklace sis gave me the day before yesterday," she held up the shimmering emerald pendant hanging off the intricate silver chain around her neck, "actually held a great deal of their energy, but most of it's gone now. This new ring, as well; in fact, I'll be using its energy to make your meal. If I use their energy

too

much, though, they'll disappear--like the rest of the jewelry sis gave me over the centuries. I'm already quite fond of them, so I don't want

that

to happen."

Solaris cleared their throat; Vixen just caught them carrying a light blush before they carried on, "So, usually kin offer their services, since items created with magic offer more energy than most things crafted by hand."

"What do you mean by--

most

."

"Well, for example, anything grown inside the Inner Keys will have much more energy; another advantage beyond bartering."

"

Stop

trying to convince me to move to Quies, sis!" A new, delicious scent wafted as Selena declared, "I

told

you, I'm

per

fectly

comfortable here on the '

edge of civilization

,' as you put it. Besides, I have

no

interest in living under this 'Duke' you speak so highly of! One monarchy was enough for me, as it should have been for you."

"And

I

keep

telling

you that the Inner Keys have so much more to offer! Protection, resources, customers with energy to spare! Quies is even quieter than Refuge and the trees are so tall you can only see the sun at noon! If you'd ever visit to

edge

of

civilization

' was the

we got out of."

," Selena insisted. "Just because we're vampires doesn't mean

everything

was

bloody

!"

"

Are You

Kidding

?! Everything

smelled of blood! Every

ONE

smelled of blood!"

"

Stop

--" Selena cleared her throat, "stop making a scene in front of

customers

, sis. I'm sure--" She covered her mouth and snapped back to Vixen, "OH, DEAR! I

never

asked your

name

!

Oh

, what a

host

I've--"

"

If

," Solaris interrupted, "you'll let me hand our dear stranger my deck to shuffle, perhaps I can answer that question for," they offered it to Vixen, "

her

?"

Still trying to catch up, Vixen gaped, "Uh-- yes, her. And," she took the cards, "I

suppose

I can-- shuffle it."

After a clumsy attempt to shuffle, Solaris reassured, "

That's

plenty.

Thank

you..." they took the untidy stack, "Vixen."

Frozen, Vixen gaped, "H-- how did--"

"I told you, my cards have their own will." They neatened the deck, "By adding your energy, you've influenced them; I know through centuries of experimentation that their arrangement is

entirely

different than when I handed them off to you, as is the energy they carry. Just by

feeling

the new energy, I can already read

so

much,

especially

since you were thinking of your name as you shuffled."

She darted between Solaris and the cards. "It's not just un

canny

," Selena postulated, looking over her shoulder, "it's

eerie

,

isn't

it?

I

was the first one Solaris asked to shuffle the deck. I had

gooseflesh

just

looking

at them when I handed it over; the

glare

of a child who knows some

devil

ish

secret--"

"

You

were the one who left herself open to a magic she didn't understan--"

"

You

," Selena dropped a delectable plate on the counter, "were the one who asked me to '

play a

little

game

' with you

knowing

you hadn't even

begun

to

understand

the magic

your

self

." She had the final huff before beaming at Vixen, "

Please

, I hope you enjoy your meal, Vixen.

Do

let me know if

anything

isn't to your liking, my dear."

Vixen finally took a seat after glancing at the dish: a steaming leg of venison infused with aromas she'd never smelled nor conceived. Drooling as she picked it up, Vixen peered at Solaris when they began, "

Well

, now that

you

have your food and my cards know

you

, would you mind if I--"

"OH!" Selena set a glass down, "

here's

your wine, sis."

"Thanks, sis. I'd nearly forgotten." Their glare didn't break from the cards as Solaris took a sip. "So, shall I begin?"

"I-- sure?" Vixen took a bite; the succulent juices made her melt as she tore a hunk off.

"

Wonderful

. So, I wanted to know 'what brought you here?' The deck is telling me only the first three cards can be used to tell that story."

"Just--

three

?" Vixen mumbled.

"You'd be surprised. I learned your name without even looking at

one

, didn't I? So, the first question is: '

who

are

you

?'" Solaris drew the top card of the deck, "'The

Reversed

Hermit.' Lonely, though not by choice." Vixen stopped chewing and peered up. They placed the card on the bar which showed an orange fox in an empty forest. "Shunned by family, shamed by peers, and turned away by lovers. Your joyless path towards fulfillment didn't just drive you mad but away from everyone whom you thought mattered."

Struggling to finish the bite she tore off, Vixen finally noticed that tears had welled. '

Turned away-- and shunned by--'

"It isn't

too

hard to guess what sort of hardship you're facing from what I know now, but," they turned the second card up. "'The Reversed

Lovers

.'

Two

Majors; now that

is

interesting." Vixen couldn't wonder anything before they explained, "The seventy eight cards in my deck are split into two categories: Majors and Minors. There are exceptions, but I've theorized that the more Majors that appear in a reading, the more important that person's role plays in destiny. Both The Lovers and The Hermit are Majors, though it's ill fortune that they were drawn in reverse.

"The Reversed Lovers," the card showed the fox cuddling with a brown wolf, "implies you were seeking fulfillment with another, but your relationship was, or became, cold and detached. Something about it felt incomplete."

Vixen tried to choke down her mouthful. '

Incomplete.'

She couldn't dry her eyes, '

That's what Den-- That's what they

all

--'

"You're a hybrid." She jerked up. "You were raised by your mother, never knowing who your father was--"

"Ha--" Vixen shivered, '

How did they know--'

"

Stop

!" Selena shoved Solaris. "It's

bad

enough the poor girl is starved and alone, but

now

you're just using your

own

life to fill in--"

"And you're sterile." Vixen gripped her mouth and began to sob. "That's why he-- why

shunned--"

"

So

is?!

That

is--"

Their voice softened, "No, it's not

just

that--"

Selena reached for the cards, "

Stop

it,

sis!

No--

"

"You're in heat." Vixen finally broke. "You've

been

in heat

ever

since you reached maturity. That--

burning

desire to breed never faded, did it? Not after

any

thing your lovers did."

"Solaris,

maybe

this isn't--"

"

Wait

," Vixen spoke up. "I," she sniffled, failing to hold back the tears, "I never even

wanted

pups. Ever since my mother explained, I just

didn't

-- For

years

I tried to tell her, but

every

time she'd say: 'Wait until you've reached your first heat.' When I finally told her: 'I

never

want to go into heat,'" she hunched over and whimpered, "she

threw me

out

!

"

"

I

," she tried to compose herself with a deep breath, "The rest of my family turned me away, so Den let me stay with him, but... But he didn't believe me either. He was just--

waiting

..."

When Vixen's cries renewed, Selena carefully put a mug filled with purplish liquid down before her. Noticing the pleasing smell, she hardly glanced at it before snatching it up to take large gulps. Solaris interjected, "That might not be--" but Selena halted them.

"It's just blueberry juice. I thought it might help."

Not even hearing them, she set the half-empty cup down and wiped her eyes. "For

months

I was just

waiting

--

dreading

when it would start. It didn't, though. I finally thought--after two years--that I

wouldn't

go into heat. But

then

it-- I felt it. I-- I didn't even have time to understand what I was feeling until I was--

we

were..."

"Vixen." She met Solaris' careful gaze. "It's okay. You don't have to--"

"

No

, I," Vixen used her sleeve to clean her fur. "I haven't-- been able to talk to--

anyone

-- about..."

"Hey," Selena reached over and held her shoulder, "you can talk to us if you need to, dear. You're not alone anymore."

'

I,'

she looked at Selena and then Solaris, '

I'm not-- alone?'

Her tears renewed but Vixen nodded with a whimper. "I... I don't remember how much we, uh-- But, even after a few weeks, my heat never faded; and then, after a few

months

, I never showed signs of bearing pups. D-despite my-- discomfort, I was

so--

so

thankful

that I wasn't-- but then," she held her trembling mouth, "Den threw me out too... He said-- he said I'm...

broken

."

"

Sweetie

, there is

nothing

broken about you," Selena reassured.

Vixen could only stare at her. "But-- I can't--"

"Having kids isn't all there is to living; neither of us have plans to create a new life."

"That's in part why we left our clan," Solaris interjected. "We were under a great deal of pressure to be like-- well, like everyone else, but neither of us

were

like everyone else."

Her heart eased but Vixen still worried, "But-- my heat--"

"Vampires are supposed to draw their energy from other people's blood." Finally distracted, Vixen's hair stood on end at the insinuation. "But, I didn't have a thirst for it when I was

supposed

to need blood, nor did I suffer from any energy deficiency.

But

, my mother made me drink it anyway; and it didn't taste

anything

like she or anyone else insisted

"They threw up on the spot."

"HEY!" Solaris snapped to her. "You didn't have to say

That

!"

"

What

? It's

true

!

All Over

mother, too. You should have

seen

her face!" Solaris covered their face as Selena looked back at Vixen, "I don't mind the taste,

usually

, but

everyone's

blood tastes different, and I can taste what

they've

been eating! It's not always pleasant and I can't tell from how they smell, so it's often a nasty surprise."

Unsure how to react, Vixen just gaped until Solaris spoke up, "What we're trying to say is that there's nothing wrong with being different than what people say you should be."

"Nothing-- wrong?" Vixen cleaned herself again. "Th-thank you. No one has ever told me that... I..." She took a deep breath. "After-- Den... I didn't have--

anyone

to turn to, so I-- I just

wandered

,

hoping

someone would give me shelter, but," she glanced between them. "I-- I don't know how well

vam

-pires can smell, but...

everyone

in my tribe could smell when-- someone was... And normally-- I guess normally you'd just stay inside but the looks people gave me, and... the--

things

... people did to me... I... I-it was--"

She halted as a hand touched her thigh. "It wasn't your fault," Solaris soothed. "None of it was your fault."

'

Not my...'

The words echoed and calmed her heart. Vixen dried her eyes, as poorly as the streaming tears would allow; nothing compared to the solace Vixen received from these strangers. "Th-thank you." She turned to solaris. "I want to hear the rest."

Her hand retreated to the deck. "Thank you for sharing and-- being so vulnerable with us. The last thing the cards want to tell me is what trial you're facing now." Solaris drew a card. "The ten of cups; a minor, but a stronger one. It's also a simple one to read: you want fulfillment, 'your cup to be filled,' as it were. Happiness, security, homecoming, something you've never had before, if I'm not mistaken."

Vixen nodded. "I-- I suppose that's true. After... Well-- After the whole village... shunned me... I set out in search of my father." She clutched the tallon. "You were right. I am a half-breed. My mother is from a wolf tribe but my father was foxkin. I didn't know where I could go, but-- trying to find him couldn't be any worse than..." After another deep breath, she met their gazes. "After wandering through the woods for a few weeks, a faerie pointed me to Refuge, and that's how I ended up here."

They both held their breath for a moment. "That's quite a tale," Selena finally spoke up.

"Is it? I don't think there's much to it besides-- pain."

"Oh, dear," Selena lamented as a customer came to the bar. "Just a moment."

"There's much more than that," Solaris held Vixen's hands; she blushed and turned towards the stunning figure. "There's hope. And a future. My cards wouldn't have shown what they did if there weren't."

'

A future... for me?'

Vixen stared agape, unsure what to say. "I... Thank you... I'll-- try to believe that."

Their hands retreated. "I'm glad. Well, I'm sure I've upset enough of your evening. Selena might be a bit busy, but she'll keep you fed and set you up in a comfortable room for as long as you need. Perhaps we'll see each other before I leave tomorrow.

"

Wait!

" Vixen reached for Solaris' sleeve as they stepped down from the stool but quickly retreated with a heavy blush. '

Oh, no... that was...'
