Human Resources: The Intern, Kaylee, Part 1
"OH MY GOSH!", Kaylee Farmer screamed excitedly when she opened and read the letter. It was from the Michelle Pruit Advertising Firm, the firm to which she'd applied for an intern position. A member of their HR department had visited her small, Missouri college, Harris-Stowe State University, and had seemed to be pleased with her interview. But it seemed like it took forever for them to finally make a decision. She'd almost written them off and figured she'd just work at the local ice-cream parlor again this year.
But the letter was clear. Mrs. Nicole Patterson, the HR directory at the Firm, told her they had accepted her! She was going to start May 26th for a three-month position. That was only three weeks away! There was so much to do!
She quickly called her parents to tell them.
"That's great!" her Mom, Rebecca, said, almost crying herself. She knew just how badly Kaylee wanted this position. "I'm so proud of you!"
"Thanks Mom," Kaylee's smile was evident, even over the phone. "The letter says that they typically have intern rooms in a hotel nearby, but that there's construction going on. They want me to stay with my boss initially. Her name is Emily Bostwick. And...," she paused for effect, "you're not going to believe this..."
"What?" Rebecca said.
"She has a condo on the twenty-first floor that overlooks Central Park!" Kaylee said excitedly, squealing and bouncing up and down. "I can't even imagine what a great view that'll be. Oh my gosh! I'm so excited!"
"Wow! This will be a wonderful opportunity for you!"
"How close is this place to work?" her Dad, Brian, ever protective of his little girl asked. "I don't want you wandering the streets too often. You know the more you're out there the more likely something bad is going to happen to you."
"Dad! I'll be ok," Kaylee said, trying to calm his nerves. "I'm sure it's pretty close. But we can see for ourselves. You're going to come with me, right? To help me move in?"
"Oh, honey, I can't," Rebecca said. "The hospital is too understaffed at the moment. But your father should be able to take you."
"Yeah, I can go," he said. "You need to be there when?"
"Early enough on Sunday so we can scope the area out and then unload my stuff at Ms. Bostwick's condo."
"Ok. I'll book the flights. I'll pick you up from your dorm on the way to the airport, then."
"What are you going to do for them? Do you know?" Rebecca asked.
"I'm not really sure. Ms. Bostwick is the head of the Digital Graphics department so I assume I'll be working on print advertisement."
"Oooh... it sounds so exciting!" Rebecca gushed, truly excited for her daughter.

Brian picked Kaylee up from her dorm at the college on Saturday and loaded the three suitcases into his car. Then they drove to the airport and checked it in. The two-and-a-half-hour flight seemed to go quickly, with Kaylee's excitement growing every minute, and exploding when she saw the skyscrapers of New York City through the airplane's window. She couldn't wait!
Brian grabbed a rental car, loaded the suitcases into it, and started to drive around the city. GPS got them around, although driving in the city was far worse than driving in Billings, Missouri. A city of nineteen million people was far, far different than the one thousand they'd left. Even the two-hundred-and-eighty thousand people in St. Louis where Kaylee's college was located didn't even compare. This was truly the BIG city.
They located and drove by Central Park Towers, where she'd be living for the next few weeks, drove around the area to get her a little familiar with it, and drove by the Firm. Then they went to their hotel for the night, about a forty-five minute drive outside the city.
On Sunday afternoon, they drove back into the city to move Kaylee in. Brian parked in a temporary loading zone and pulled the three suitcases from the car, then they made their way inside. A security officer checked his list and let them in, directing them to the elevators where they rode up to the twenty-first floor.
There were only two apartments on this floor of the building, and Kaylee rang the bell for apartment B. In just a minute, the door opened and a beautiful, middle aged woman opened the door.
"You must be Kaylee," she said, extending her hand to shake Kaylee's. "I'm Ms. Bostwick."
"Hi! It's nice to meet you. I'm Kaylee," the young woman said nervously.
"Hi," Brian said as he took the woman's hand into his own. "I'm Brian... Kaylee's dad. Nice to meet you." He was struck by her beauty. She was older, his age, with lightly greying brown hair that she kept pinned back. She was wearing a simple dress, which appeared to be tied at her left hip. It went down to her knees, but the front had a deep opening that revealed a lot of cleavage. It made him a bit tongue-tied as he imagined the whole thing coming undone with just a little tug on the tie at her hip.
"Please, please," Emily Bostwick said, stepping aside to let them enter. "Come in."
Kaylee was shocked at how beautiful the place looked. This was almost a dream come true for her. The short entry hallway led into a spacious kitchen, dining room, then a living room. Large windows were on two walls, providing a gorgeous view of the city skyline and the park below. By one set of windows, in the corner, was a hot tub. "Wow," she whispered.
"You have a very beautiful home," Brian said softly, taking it all in himself. This was far more opulent than he'd ever seen, too. He knew she was paying a lot of money to live here. She was probably paying more per month than he made in six.
"Thank you," Emily smiled warmly. Her smile made them both melt. It was both warm and inviting as well as sensual. "There's not much to show you otherwise," she giggled. "You pretty much see the whole place." She walked towards a short hallway with three closed doors. "Here's your room."
Brian and Kaylee pulled her suitcases across the stone floor as Emily opened the bedroom. It was a smaller room, about the same size as her room in Missouri, with a full-size bed and two dressers. The closet was good sized, plenty of room for the amount of clothing Kaylee brought. She opened the blinds, but noticed that this angle only showed the high-rise next door; not a view to get excited about.
"This is so nice! Thank you for letting me stay here," the young, short, brunette said.
"Oh, no," Emily said. "It's no problem at all. I'm just sorry that the intern rooms are not available right now. You'd probably prefer your own space. But we'll make due here."
