Looking around Streidel Lake, Kaia Stevens once again thought that this was a huge mistake. Just like in high school, the cliques had banded together immediately upon arrival, excluding any that did not belong to their circle of friends. Being the valedictorian of their school, she certainly did not fit in with any of these people.
Carrying the cup of very potent 'Jungle Juice' to a log, Kaia sat down and took a sip of the foul-tasting beverage. She shuddered as the excessive alcohol burned from her lips to her throat to her belly.
"Should have stayed at home," Kaia again thought, looking around at the former high school students.
There had been twenty three students in her graduating class; three students had failed to make the cut. Eddie Trahan had failed too many classes to simply go to summer school like Evelyn Dorchester; Eddie would repeat the twelfth grade. Kaia could hear Evelyn whoop, already on her way to a monumental drunk as she showed everyone that she'd managed to pass her classes and was now a high school graduate.
In just a few days, some of these teenagers would be going on to college, or to the military, like Keith and Kevin O'Neil, the O'Neil twins. The majority would most likely languish in Burstyn, Mississippi until marriage and kids pulled them deeper into their mire. Or drugs would drag them through desperation and finally, if they were fortunate, death.
Kaia took another sip of her potent drink and wondered why she'd even bothered to come for this end of summer bonfire. Looking around at the seventeen or eighteen of the remnants of their graduating class, she could not think of anything she had in common with any of them.
"Hey!" Ashleigh Wilson squealed, stepping over the log to flop down on Kaia's left side.
"Hey!" Marta O'Neil, cousin to Keith and Kevin O'Neil flopped down on Kaia's right.
"Marta, I would have failed Mrs. Ortega's class, I swear," Ashleigh declared, squeezing Kaia in an unexpected hug.
"God, yeah, I know, I know, you would have failed if Kaia hadn't helped you out," Marta teased Kaia and Ashleigh. "I got to hear all this all over again? Really? Do I really?"
"All I did was show you the steps," Kaia protested.
"Did a lot more than that," Ashleigh declared, rubbing Kaia's bare back in an affectionate manner.
Looking at the blonde cheerleader's outfit of bikini, Kaia didn't feel underdressed in her bikini top and denim cutoffs. Underneath the shorts, she wore her bikini bottom, even though she wasn't quite brave enough to swim Streidel Lake. They might claim they'd cleaned the lake, but less than five years ago, this entire area had been a landfill. As it was, the water of the man-made lake was a suspicious brown color.
"I am so glad you're here," Ashleigh enthused, again hugging Kaia.
"I, really?" Kaia asked, surprised.
"Well, yeah!" Ashleigh said. "I mean, Marta and I are fixing leave Sunday. Kaia, we might never see each other again."
"And that's a bad thing?" Kaia thought, listening to three of the football players loudly braying to one another about nothing in particular.
"God, what's in this anyway?" Marta asked, taking a monumental sip of her Jungle Juice.
"It's got rum, that dark rum, um, fruit punch, um, couple cans of fruit cocktail," Ashleigh said. "I made Nina dig down and get me a couple chunks of the fruit."
"Oh, cool," Marta said, peering into Ashleigh's solo cup. "I didn't get any."
"Really, I am just so glad you're here," Ashleigh said again, squeezing Kaia in another hug.
Kaia did not doubt the head cheerleader's sincerity. Looking at the beautiful blonde, bikini top barely containing her 32DD breasts, narrow waist and nicely rounded buttocks, Kaia felt out of place. To her right, Marta was also a striking blonde with waist length straw colored hair, vivid blue eyes and a straight nose above pouting lips. Her own bikini was taut across her 32D breasts and her bikini bottom was a thong style, displaying her sweetly rounded buttocks.
In her own bikini top, Kaia's 29B breasts would get scant attention from any of the males in attendance. Her shoulder length carrot orange hair and multitude of freckles over her pretty face usually garnered her sneers from their classmates. At five feet even, her slim body was proportional; she did have to admit, she had a cute butt.
"And these damned stubby little legs," she thought, looking at Ashleigh's sleek legs, Marta's sleek, lightly tanned legs.
"Doctor did a great job fixing up your nose," Kaia blurted out, looking at Marta's face in the fading light.
"Oh, thanks!" Marta smiled, hand going up to her nose.
Burstyn High School had been eliminated from the State finals by the team from Yorda, Mississippi. Everyone protested; Yorda had two biological males on their team but the boys were allowed to compete; they claimed to be transgender. A savage spike from one of the boys struck Marta in the face, knocking her unconscious. Her nose had been smashed flat from the ball's velocity.
"I still say they should have..." Kaia said bitterly.
"Yeah, well, thankfully the national news about it got me a full volleyball scholarship," Marta shrugged. "Without that? I'd probably be stuck here, sitting over there listening to Chuck and his idiot buddies arguing about the same thing they was arguing about yesterday, and the day before, and the day before that. Anyone here actually care about Ole Miss or Mississippi State's upcoming football schedule? Anywone? Anyone?"
"Marta and me? We're going to the same university!" Ashleigh crowed happily. "I got a cheerleading scholarship!"
"Uh? Thanks to me?" Marta declared. "Like that university would have ever even heard of you if I hadn't got creamed by that boy?"
"Oh, whatever," Ashleigh laughed happily, jostling Kaia with a shoulder bump. "You believe her?"
Someone's car stereo boomed out a current hit song. Kaia sang along with the song while Ashleigh and Marta continued to playfully bicker with one another over a myriad of topics.
"So you got a tent here?" Ashleigh demanded, breaking Kaia out of song.
"Hmm? No, no," Kaia said, pointing to where her car was parked. "Just going sleep in..."
"Nuh uh!" Marta objected.
"We got my tent right over there," Ashleigh insisted, pointing to a domed tent among the other haphazardly arranged tents. "You're bunking with us."
"You are staying the night, right?" Marta verified, clutching Kaia's hand.
Someone lighted the bonfire and Kaia's answer was cut short by the collective gasps then cheers and the longs burst into flames. The blaze of light temporarily blinded everyone and the laughter and cheers continued for a few moments.
"Come on; Nina's got some hot dogs and sticks," Ashleigh said, pulling Kaia to her feet.
"I got stuff on my butt?" Marta asked, thrusting her well-formed haunches toward Ashleigh.
"Let's see. Yeah, here," Ashleigh said, brushing the loose bark from the log off of Marta's rump. "I got any on mine?"
"Little bit," Marta said, quickly brushing Ashleigh's rear end free of debris. "Kaia, let's see..."
Kaia flamed bright red as two cheerleaders brushed her exposed rear end with their soft hands. Then, hand in hand, Ashleigh dragged Kaia to one of the picnic tables where Nina Lyons, a striking red head had packages of hot dogs and hot dog buns arranged.
