In the 1940s, Senegal was a French colony, and these black Africans were conscripted to fight alongside the French against the Germans in the Second World War. The Nazis were outraged at having to fight what they considered to be an inferior race. For those Senegalese who didn't die in the cold mud of Europe, suffered greatly in Nazi POW camps.
