Lonely Desire
Cherry Springs, 1979
It was Summer, and the street was full of kids running around playing, and adults sitting on porches talking to friends and neighbors. They all looked up as the police car rolled slowly down the block, and went on with their activities as it continued.
The car stopped in front of a simple one-story craftsman house with a red-brick exterior and black-tiled roof. Officer Phil Danbury of the Cherry Springs PD checked the address on the mailbox against the one written in his notepad, and seeing that they matched, got out of his cruiser.
Even under normal circumstances, Danbury would be noticeable, standing six feet tall with broad shoulders and dark-brown skin. The shoulder holster that he wore on duty made sure that he stood out in a crowd.
Danbury made sure his weapon was secure before walking up the pathway to the house. He stepped up onto the porch and rang the doorbell. Through the closed door, he could hear the sounds of music in the house. After a few moments with no answer, he pushed the doorbell again.
"I'm coming! Hold on!" Officer Danbury saw the silhouette of a person through the door window before it was opened. Standing in front of him was a woman of about average height. Her hips were squeezed into a pair of black capri pants, and her ample bosom was on display in the pink blouse she was wearing, the upper buttons undone. From inside the house, the voice of Teena Marie could be heard belting out a song.
"Are you Ms. Charlotte Bellini?"
"Yeah, I am," the woman responded, a cigarette in her fingers and frustration evident in her hazel eyes. She took a moment to take in who was standing in front of her. "Oh, fuck, what happened now?"
"We picked up your son, Daniel, earlier today. One of our officers caught him and a couple of his friends smoking marijuana behind the old abandoned Batista Hotel."
"Goddamit!" Charlotte exclaimed. She took a pull on her cigarette and turned her face away from the officer before blowing the smoke out. "I warned hm to stay away from those fucking trouble makers."
"Well, it looks like he didn't heed your warning, and now we have him down at juvie. I've been sent to bring you down there so you can see him."
"Shit. Okay. Give me a minute to get my shoes on," Charlotte said. She backed away from the door and gestured for Danbury to come in before padding barefoot across the carpeted room. She stopped in front of the stereo and turned it off before going down the hallway to her bedroom. She appeared a couple of minutes later with a pair of black peep-toe kitten heels on her feet and a white purse over her shoulder.
"Okay, Officer..."
"Danbury. Officer Danbury, ma'am."
"Okay, Officer Danbury. I'm ready to go and see my damn son."
The two of them walked out of the house and made their way to the parked police car. "Do you mind?" Charlotte asked, holding a cigarette in her fingers.
"No, go ahead," Danbury answered, starting the car.
Charlotte lit the cigarette and cranked the window open. The two of them rode in silence. Danbury had enough experience in these situations to know that trying to engage a parent in small talk when they were on their way to see a child locked up in juvenile detention often just made them more annoyed.
Twenty minutes and two cigarettes later, they arrived at the detention center. Danbury parked in a spot close to the entrance and escorted Charlotte into the building.
"Hey Danbury," the officer at the front desk greeted him.
"How's it going, Pearce? How's the family?"
"Kids are driving me insane, and my wife loves spending my money. So, you know, the usual," Officer Pearce said with a hearty laugh. "What brings you here?" he asked, tilting his head to peer at Charlotte.
"This is Ms. Bellini. We picked up her son Daniel this afternoon, and she's here to see him."
Pearce's eyes scanned the logbook in front of him. "Bellini. Bellini. Ah, here we go, Daniel Bellini, age seventeen. Brought in this afternoon on a possession charge. Danbury, take Ms. Bellini to Room 9, and I'll have him brought down."
Officer Danbury led the woman to the appropriate room and waited in the room with her until there was a knock on the door. He opened it, and another officer led Daniel Bellini into the room.
"I'll be outside when you're done," Danbury said to Charlotte before exiting the room. The officer who escorted Daniel posted himself right outside the door.
About ten minutes later, Phil was leaning against the front desk, talking to Pearce, when Charlotte walked down the hall towards the front door. Danbury cut his conversation with Pearce short before approaching the woman.
"How did it go? Is he okay?"
"You mean besides being locked up in juvie because he decided to be a dumbass?" Charlotte answered, visibly annoyed.
"Okay, I guess that was the wrong question to ask," Danbury said, walking with Charlotte to the exit. "Do you need a ride back home?"
Charlotte looked at Officer Danbury as if she was going to give him another angry response, but she stopped herself. "That would be nice," she said. "It would save me having to call a friend or a cab."
The two of them walked back out to the police car and settled in for the ride back to Charlotte's home.
"I'm sorry about giving you attitude earlier," Charlotte finally said, exhaling the smoke of another cigarette.
"It's okay, it's not your fault. I know how stressful things like this can be for a parent. I see it all the time."
"I just don't understand why he has to be so damn hard-headed."
"Boys can be like that. We always have to test our boundaries, especially at that age."
"But why can't it involve girls? Why something that gets him arrested?"
Phil Danbury shrugged in response. "While you were in the room with him, I made a phone call. I know the judge who's assigned to his case. If you want, I can take you to see him Monday morning before court."
"Really? You'd do that for me?"
"I don't wanna see a kid like that fall through the cracks," Danbury answered.
"You know what's fucked up? I work nights at the hospital just to provide for my son, and he goes and does some shit like this."
"He's not so far gone that he can't be put back on the right track," Phil said.
"I just need to keep him out of jail."
"We'll work on that when I take you to see Judge Parker on Monday."
At this point, they arrived back at the Bellini home. Charlotte opened the door and stepped out of the car. "Thank you again for the ride, and for listening to me rant."
"It's okay," Phil said, smiling at the single mother. "I'm just trying to help give the kid a second chance."
"I really appreciate it." A look came over Charlotte's face, as if she wanted to say something else, but wasn't sure.
"I'll see you Monday morning," Phil said, saving her from the awkward pause.
"Yeah, see you on Monday, Officer Danbury." Charlotte closed the car door, and Phil watched as she made her way up the walkway to her house. Charlotte looked back, and Phil waved at her, hoping she didn't see him watching her ass sway as she walked. She returned the wave, and Phil drove off.
Monday morning found Officer Danbury pulling up to the Bellini house at the appointed time. He had called Charlotte the day before to establish what time would be good for her. He remembered that she worked nights and wanted to make sure she wouldn't be sleeping or anything. He saw he didn't need to worry when he parked the car and saw Charlotte sitting on the porch, smoking a cigarette. She waved to him and stood up, letting the cigarette dangle from her lips as she slid her purse over her shoulder. This time, Charlotte was wearing a sky-blue pleated skirt that came down to her knees, a black button-down blouse, and silver heels. Phil felt a rush of excitement as Charlotte walked towards the car. He tamped it down, hoping it wasn't obvious on his face as Charlotte reached for the car door.
"Good morning, Officer Danbury," she said, settling into the passenger seat."
"Good morning," he responded.
"Thanks again for doing this," Charlotte said as Phil pulled off.
"It's no problem, really. Just trying to do my job." The two of them rode the rest of the way in silence. Charlotte rolled down the window and finished smoking her cigarette. She was trying not to let her nervousness overwhelm her.
They arrived at the courthouse, and the two of them walked in together. They stopped at the front desk, and Danbury introduced them to the clerk. "Officer Phil Danbury, and I'm here to escort Ms. Charlotte Bellini to a meeting with Judge Truman."
The clerk looked in her book and found their names. "Okay, you can go up. Room 322 on the third floor," she said, pointing to the elevators.
Danbury noticed Charlotte's nervous shuffling as they waited for the elevator. "It'll be okay," he said, gently grabbing her hand. "This will all work out." Charlotte just gave him a nervous smile in response, and didn't pull her hand away until the doors opened and they stepped into the elevator.
