Devin Arnett is a short, slender, red-haired and pale-skinned young Irish-American fellow living in the City of Boston, Massachusetts. One day, while in his dorm at Northeastern University, Devin is visited by his buddy Stevenson Croix, a big and tall young Black man of Haitian descent. Stevenson was in a heap of trouble as his embittered ex-girlfriend Malika Draughn called the cops on him, and he had to leave the apartment they shared in Bridgewater. When there's a domestic dispute, the authorities always side with the woman, and the man is always at fault. Such is the law in the United States of America.
"I've got nowhere else to go," Stevenson said to Devin. The young Haitian man was being totally honest. He'd hitched a ride from Bridgewater to Boston and had run out of funds. Stevenson's parents Amelie and Jean-Paul Croix were vacationing in the Caribbean and attempts at reaching them had been unsuccessful. Stevenson was caught between a rock and a hard place. Devin and Stevenson have been old buddies since their high school days, so Devin let his pal stay at his place for a couple of days. What are friends for?
"Stay as long as you want," Devin said to a very grateful Stevenson. The two buddies left the Northeastern University campus and went to grab a bite at a nearby restaurant. Stevenson bought Devin lunch and the two stocked up on groceries. They returned to the dorm, and spent the day watching movies, playing video games and having a good time. Devin understood Stevenson's problems all too well. A few months ago, Devin split from his girlfriend Mira Yamamoto, a gorgeous young Japanese woman whose uptight parents didn't approve of her relationship with Devin.
"Sorry to hear about you and Mira," Stevenson said to Devin, who smiled and nodded. Devin was quite fond of Mira Yamamoto, but he was still disappointed that she didn't stand up for him when her parents vilified him simply because he wasn't Japanese. A lot of people think that Asian families love seeing their daughters with White men but that's not always the case. The prejudice against interracial relationships cuts across all cultures, and some people simply won't budge on that. Devin loved Mira Yamamoto, but he had to move on with his life.
