Chapter 7 -- The Prelude to Goodbye
AJ hugged Brent -- "You know how to flatter a boy. I'll consider the Fab Four's proposal of playing with AJ Jr. and let you know. Are we good?"
The Musketeers -- "Always"
AJ made his way home to spend a few hours with the family before they all headed home. They talked, had a light lunch, and shared stories of the family, not all included Syd, but it was a good time to heal and reflect. AJ was doing well on the outside but he was running from the black hole that was threatening to swallow his heart. Nanny, Gran, and Gina all noticed the outward joy in AJ's voice and the despair in his eyes. They were joining forces in the corner; AJ had not missed any of the huddles that occurred over the few hours the family hung around AJ's place.
The siblings with children all headed out earlier to make certain they were home in plenty of time to get ready for school so they would miss only one day. Which they all gladly did for their brother/uncle/friend. Amanda and Chandler were just 3 and 4 years younger than AJ, closer in age than any of AJ's siblings. They made it clear that they would be there for him no matter what and he had better call if he needed ANYTHING. He agreed under the penalty of torture -- tickle that is. He truly loved these girls.
AJ finished up schoolwork and preparations for the fall semester. He picked up Syd's ashes from the funeral home and coordinated with Charlene for the service on the 16th of May on Mercer Island, which would be simple, understated, and elegant just like his lovely wife. Three photos were selected -- one of just Syd, one of Syd and AJ, and then the family photo that had been floated down the river. Everything was ready, that AJ was dealing with, Charlene and Gran were handling the catering for the after-service get-together at Charlene and Elliot's. Elliot had the boat ready for AJ to take out on the lake -- AJ and the boys would be staying with Gran before the service and the final spreading of ashes on the lake. He was going against her wishes on this one and including their parents and grandmothers -- Charlene, Elliot, Gran, Pops, Mama, Nanny, Conor, and Caleb would be joining AJ, this would be their last goodbye.
With everything set, he had the kids packed and ready to leave on Thursday, they would spend 4 or 5 days with his parents and then over to Gran's. AJ spending the time with Gran continued to be a source of frustration with Elliot and Charlene, but AJ could not spend the night in Syd's room without her, it was him nothing more, nothing less, he was just not ready.
Trav, Jer, Chase, Brett, Brent, and Steve were all over on Wednesday night for dinner and beers, which were technically illegal for AJ, Chase, and Brett but there were no cops invited so beers were on hand. As they were sitting down to burgers, dogs, chips, and beer, there was a knock at the door, Chase went to answer --
Chase was trying to be funny -- "Hide the beers, Popo is here..."
Scott wanted to put the punk in his place -- "Chase, up against the wall and spread em."
Brett yelled from the table -- "Chase that doesn't mean you drop your drawers and push your ass out."
Chase was pinned to the wall -- "fuck you."
Brett was going to find out a few things about Officer Scott Reed -- "No I think that is what Popo may have in mind but you aren't Skeeter."
AJ looked at Brett with a puzzled look on his face. He was certain that Brett was losing his mind and just being an ass -- "Steve, does your boyfriend ever get his mind above everyone's crotch area?"
Steve leaned in and whispered to AJ -- 'I'm not sure he is too far off on this one. He is around a lot and he does follow you with his eyes all the time.'
AJ growled -- 'You're a fucking moron too, I'm straight and so is he.'
Steve chuckled -- 'You're an idiot, you didn't tell us no when we propositioned you to suck your dick so on the Kinsey scale you aren't strictly straight my friend.'
As Chase and Scott walked into the dining area, Chase was offering up a plate and a place to sit. Scott told Chase he needed nicer friends who didn't always disparage his virtue. Brent heard that comment, laughed loudly, and choked on his dog.
Brett smiled -- "Chase, me thinks Brent is questioning your virtue while he chokes on a wiener."
Everyone around the table laughed loudly at that comment and Brent turned bright red at the implication. He flipped Brett off and continued eating. Trav and Jer, who were oblivious to the conversation, offered Scott a chair and would not take no for an answer, he wasn't in uniform and appeared to have something in his hands for AJ.
Trav was going to play his part well -- "Look honey, the Popo has a gift. I wonder if it is for my boyfriend, Scott, are you hitting on my man?"
So Trav was not so oblivious to the conversation. Scott turned three shades of red and handed the package to AJ -- "This was on the porch and I thought I would bring it in for you and not leave it out there."
AJ was not buying it -- "Thank you and don't mind the inmates, they think everyone should be at least 'bi' on the Kinsey scale. There are 4 gays, 2 bis, and one confused sitting at this table. When you sit down, we'll have at least 1 straight."
Jer mused -- "Looking at Scott I would say he is either confused or bi category but that is just my observation no facts to support it."
AJ was a bit frustrated with his friends as he was still dealing with his body's reaction to Officer Scott Reed -- "Would you all just drop the rantings, not everyone you run across is confused, bi, or gay."
Chase was not letting his big off the hook -- "Well, until this past week you were in the 'straight' category but I do agree with AJ, labels are for idiots. We need to get to a point where love is love and attraction is an attraction, not a label you carry around with you."
AJ was done with this conversation -- "Scott, what brings you by?"
Scott was checked out watching the banter -- "Shit I'm sorry, the intellectual banter of 7 college students had me distracted. Maureen asked me to drop this other package off for you and the boys. She was upset that she could not make the memorial but knew you and the boys would be going through a roller coaster of emotions. It's just a small gift."
AJ opened the gift. It was beautiful and he knew instantly what it was. He thanked Scott and asked him to pass on his appreciation to Maureen. Trav was watching Scott closely and was convinced the gift was from Scott. He was also pretty certain that Scott was far from straight and falling for AJ even though he was set to be married in August.
Trav was curious about the gift -- "AJ, what is it?"
Scott started to answer but AJ stopped him -- "Thank you both so much for the Triskelion. Trav, the triskelion is the Irish symbol for the family. This one is a metal medallion with a stand that we can display. It has Syd's name, mine, and the boys around the edge. It's perfect."
Trav and the others were watching the exchange intently. They all were convinced there was more behind the gift from Scott than AJ realized. They all felt he was oblivious to all things related to the attractions he brought out in others. It was one of AJ's best qualities -- humble to a fault and one of the reasons Trav was attracted to him as well. He had seen the look Scott was giving AJ in many a suitor's eyes -- male and female when it came to AJ. Trav was interested in a friend-with-benefits relationship, not a long-term love, and he was afraid that Scott was falling into the latter category. He saw this ending badly for Scott.
