The kitchen was dappled by the Sun bursting through the luscious green leaves adorning the centuries old oak outside the window by the sink. I always daydreamed out the window between stretches of meticulous dish washing. Even though June had a dishwasher, I was forbidden from using it.
"My dishes must all be cleaned by hand, my little maid."
She was firm in her stance on my work. To do anything not by hand was to cheat. Her alternative methods were in place to teach me good discipline, awareness, and a certain "demure diligence" that she was looking for in me.
As I scrubbed the very last plate from last night's dinner, dried it and returned it to the cupboard, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. This morning's chores were done, at long last.
June had gone out after dinner last night with a friend of hers to a nightclub and hadn't come home. That meant either she decided to stay with a friend for the night, or she found and kept the company of a gentleman suitor. In any case, she would be home soon, and I wasn't in uniform.
I dragged myself upstairs and into my room, gently closing the door behind me. I gazed at myself in the full length mirror that hung on the inside of the door, examining with quiet reserve the despondent clone that stared back. I was someone now that I barely recognized.
A little over a year ago I had developed a heavy crush on June, a coworker of mine at the restaurant we worked at. Some who caught on, including my manager, called it "puppy-love." They were right, as much as I didn't want to believe it. Four years my senior, she was tall, slender, statuesque - a professional dancer looking to break into the business. I was fairly skinny, a little shorter than she was. We made an odd pairing, to put it bluntly.
June and I were great friends. We would laugh together on shift, bond over crappy customer experiences and tips, and talk wide-eyed with each other about movies and TV-shows we both loved.
June was fun. She was kind, but always honest for better or worse. Outside of dancing, she had a penchant for fast cars, extreme sports, and well, adrenaline in all its forms. Life to her was one big white-knuckle ride.
I, on the other hand, was perfectly content where I was. I had a job which made great tips, gave me great transferable skills and the restaurant we worked at was fancy and popular, and customers were a-plenty. I had an apartment in the city which suited my every need. All I needed now was someone to share it with.
I figured if I didn't at least try, a girl like June could slip right through my fingers. Somehow I mustered the courage to ask her out for a date as we were closing down the restaurant together one late Thursday evening shift. In reality, I might have mumbled something about getting coffee, "or whatever."
June was stunned for a few seconds, wondering if I was teasing her, as we tended to do during our shifts together.
"I-oh, I'm sorry darling, I'm very flattered. But you're just... not really my type."
I was crushed. I could have seen it coming, but there was a small weight lifted off my shoulders knowing that I will never always have to wonder "what if". Still, I was bruised by the rejection.
"I'm more into, well, big strong men, someone who can... well you know."
I didn't know, but I nodded. It was an odd thing to follow up with.
Knowing when to quit however, I gave a polite smile to her and turned back around, returning to mopping the floor of the bar. Hiding my sour expression from her, I plopped the wet soapy mop on the ugly vinyl flooring of the bar, swishing suds around and hoping she would forget I even asked.
"I do have another idea though, which you might be interested in."
I froze. Refusing to turn around, I waited for the follow up, staring down at the soap suds that were dissolving in the water around my shoes.
"We both have a day off tomorrow, no?"
I cocked my head around and looked over my shoulder at her. She was leaning on her hip with her arm on her waist, tributaries of dark brown hair resting over her shoulders. She always let her hair down after the last customer left. She whipped her head to one side to move a few strays out of her eyes.
"Uhm..."
She blinked slowly as I struggled to recall from memory this week's shift rotation.
Come to my apartment tomorrow at two o' clock. We can talk more about it then."
She grabbed a pen and an old customer receipt from a table, scribbling her address on it and leaving it on the bar for me.
"I need to catch my train, darling. Lock up once you've finished mopping behind the bar," she said swinging her leather bomber jacket over her white uniform shirt and grabbing her purse. She always called me darling. A term of endearment only just barely suitable for a workplace. "And don't be late."
She swung the restaurant door open, drawing in the cool night air and city sounds into the chemical-scented humidity of the post-Thursday-shift bistro.
"This waitress doesn't wait." She toothily grinned at me.
She chuckled at her own joke and left, a thick silence left hanging in the restaurant in her absence.

As I lay in bed that night, I tossed and turned, wondering what June's big "idea" was and why it involved me. She had already turned me down, so what was this about? It surely couldn't be anything remotely romantic. That avenue seemed closed off permanently.
Being slightly older than me, and a few inches taller than I was, her archetype perfectly fit like a puzzle piece into the fetishistic jigsaw of my mind. The hot friend of an older sibling. The strict teacher who likes to punish to see you squirm. The secret kinkster with a secret dungeon of BDSM pleasures... and torments.
Unable to fall asleep, I grabbed my phone from the floor beside my bed, yanking the charger out so I could sit up more comfortably.
I opened Instagram and scrolled for a while. Stupid looking recipes involving way too much cheese... some guy with an oversized watch on a podcast telling me I need to buy more cryptocurrency... a picture of a friend I hadn't spoken to since school on holiday in Thailand. The standard lineup of dreck.
I did follow June on Instagram though. She would post clips of her contemporary dance routines. She was a gazelle, effortlessly prancing, her form impeccable and bold. Like a siren, the language of movement was her captivating song. I was addicted to her. But after being turned down, I had to scrub her from my mind. It was for the best. It would be difficult having to work with her after my awkwardly delivered proposition and prompt rejection. Perhaps I could ask my manager for us to not have shifts on the same days anymore.
Meeting her outside work hours wasn't such a great step towards achieving distance.

*Knock* *Knock* *Knock*
I took a step back. My palms were already getting clammy as I stared idly at the number on June's apartment door. In a few moments, the door would swing open and there she would be standing before me.
The apartment block was very nice indeed, and it was in an upscale area. There was greenery all around the building, and it was quiet. Certainly more quiet than where I lived. An odd habitat for such a high-octane person like June.
The door latch clicked and swung open, making my heart skip a beat and my stomach drop.
She stood in the doorway, and we locked eyes. She cocked her head to one side, smirking. She was wearing a burgundy crop top, and gym shorts, and I couldn't help but take in her astounding figure.
"Well well. You actually showed up?"
Her long dark brown hair was up in a ponytail, as if she had just gone for a run. I could barely speak at the sight of her.
"O-oh! Hi June." I stuttered out.
"Mm." she eyed me up and down. "Come on in, then."
I slowly stepped forward and she held the door open for me as I passed her, coming to a standstill in the hall.
