Kimiko huffed, puffing out her cheeks with air.
"Damn it, damn it, I'm going to be late, I'm going to be late!"
Kimiko rushed to get ready, her white socks on already, although she was still in the process of dragging on her orange cheerleading outfit. She hadn't been a fan of the black lines on it, defining the team logo, when she'd first joined the squad, but it had grown on her. It was nice that her black hair, bouncing merrily in a ponytail at that very moment, set it off too.
In other words, she matched. But she wasn't the best at being ready on time, even in her college cheerleading squad. The stakes were high and her body rang with lean, mean muscle, the long lines of her, however petite, body often on show as she flipped through the air. Of course, Kimiko had always wanted to be a "flyer," even though that was a term that most who weren't into cheerleading would have known about.
But it was the one thing keeping her going through college and who could have known there were scholarships for those who took part in cheerleading too? It was as difficult for her to work out and through as it was for someone going for a more academic-focused scholarship, and she had to maintain a certain grade, of course, but it was well within the scope of her abilities.
As she smoothed down her outfit, checking everything was in place in front of the mirror, her lips tightened, pressing together into a thinner, harder line than usual. It would have taken a much more detached person to not see what was happening in the news reports, though even Kimiko had not believed it at first. Who would honestly believe that people were randomly growing giant arms, breasts...and even pussies too? Some of the reports were downright obscene, showing women waddling around with fat, swollen sexes between their legs. Even if they were blurred on the screens and pictures, once they'd burst through their clothes, it was still obvious just how thick they were, how lewd it had all become.
Some had grown taller too and they said it was a mutagen in the water supply that was causing it, the only tell a slight, blue sheen to the water when pouring a glass or bathing in it. Many, many people had already flocked to the supermarkets already to purchase bottled water, but, of course, there were rumours too about that being contaminated also. It seemed like nothing was safe. There were reports too of a wafting, purple-blue cloud floating above the city, spreading further and further across the country like a swarm of insects. Yet the swarm did not devour, apparently, but changed every person irrevocably.
At least, that depended on what a person believed. There were so many rumours and confusing reports going around that Kimiko didn't know what to believe. It didn't appear to be something anyone could avoid and she'd seen just how strange frenzies could spread in earlier health scares. Even if she'd been freaked out by some of the earlier reports, she hadn't wanted to believe them and shut out most of what she heard, as much as other students at the college chattered. Even if they were adults away from home, a range of ages, she still kind of felt more mature than some, even if she was only eighteen.
"Okay, okay," she muttered to herself, tugging her skirt down in the mirror, though her stomach lurched uncomfortably. "Today is not the day to have a breakdown, Kimiko, don't worry about all that. It's just some crazy stuff that's never going to involve you and is never for you to worry about."
She tried to shake it off as a wave of dizziness overcame her and she tipped sideways, bracing herself on the wall of the locker room, stepping back and away from the mirror.
"Ugh..." She tried to say, though the words came thickly and slowly from her mouth, her throat tightening. "What is... I can't be sick today, no."
If Kimiko had still been looking in the mirror, she would have seen the twitching pulses in her throat, as if the veins in her body were thickening and pulsating. There was something there, something under her skin.
Ignoring the discomfort and shoving down her unease, she turned to the exit of the locker rooms, taking a breath, though every breath came with increasing unsteadiness. She wobbled and cried out sharply as a jabbing pain lanced into her stomach, swiftly spreading to every limb and her extremities.
Oh no...
Kimiko heaved, her stomach rolling, though it didn't feel quite as if she was going to be sick. Not even as horror dawned upon her, a cold sweat breaking out on her skin, lips agape in a ragged cry as she realised exactly what was happening to her.
