Nick let out a defeated sigh as he got a glimpse of his ex's Insta while he doomscrolled through the app. His thumb paused on a picture of her laughing at some rooftop bar. Was she already seeing someone new? They had broken up months ago, sure, but seeing her move on so easily still hit like a gut punch. He huffed out a complaint, blocking his cellphone.
The darkened screen reflected the sorry state he was at the moment. His dirty blonde hair was shaggier than he usually allowed, and a small stumble was already forming on his round face. Sure, he hadn't been an Adonis before, but now even his good points, such as his above average height and the decent shape he had kept himself in, were getting muddled up.
"Yo bro! Still throwing a pity party for yourself?" The front door creaked open, followed by a loud, familiar voice that snapped him out of his groove. Nick barely glanced up from his phone as his roommate Alexis sauntered into the room, carrying an awkwardly lumpy package under one arm.
He hadn't even noticed she had left earlier, but it seemed like she had been gone for a while. The short, dark-haired woman had even had time to dress up in multiple layers to deal with the cold weather. She threw her wooly hat away, and began to remove her jacket, revealing the fit figure that Nick had grown familiar with.
Nick finally lifted his gaze to look at the poorly wrapped package. Its humanoid shape giving away exactly what it was.
Nick sighed heavily. "What the hell is that?"
"This lil thing?" Alexis smirked, laying the package on the coffee table with a loud thunk. "It's your Christmas present, bro. Thought you could use a little holiday cheer."
Nick's eyes narrowed as he observed his 'gift.' "You've got to be kidding me. Really?" He asked, frowning at his friend.
Alexis gave him a knowing wink. "Hey, no peeking until Christmas morning. Them's the rules."
Nick groaned, slumping deeper into the couch. "You really bought a blow-up doll and wrapped it as a Christmas present? What's wrong with you?"
"Are you sure it's a sex doll? It could be anything," Alexis said, shaking the doll around, with a smug grin that didn't help her case. She picked up the package and carried it over to the corner where their pitiful Christmas tree, a dinky little three-foot plastic thing they had set up as a joke, stood alone. With a dramatic flourish, she wedged the wrapped "gift" under the tree, the stiff limbs of the doll poking out awkwardly under the tree.
"There. Perfect." Alexis stepped back, admiring her handiwork. "Now it really feels like Christmas in here."
Nick pinched the bridge of his nose as he stood up to leave. "You're such an idiot."
"Call me what you want, but when Christmas morning comes, you're gonna love this," Alexis said with a wink. "Until then, no peeking!"
