Chapter 8

It was two days later. Mark had showered and shaved and was working on getting dressed. His coffee mug occupied one hand and the other struggled to complete the tasks necessary to dress himself.

"What is wrong with you?" Jess asked, laughing at such a stupid situation. She sat at the foot of their bed. "Come here."

"Ok." He attempted to say. Mark's mouth had a half-eaten bagel in it. He was running behind schedule because today, Jess had a date with Charles. Mark and Jess had been up talking for hours, and he had managed to lose track of time.

Jess pulled his pants up and zipped them. She kissed his cheek lovingly, while she dodged his bagel. She tucked in and buttoned his shirt then buckled his belt.

Mark stood overseeing in an advisory capacity at this point. He drank his coffee.

Jess looked up at him and couldn't help but laugh. She smiled so brightly. Mark felt that smile. He knew with what was going on, it was important right now. He spit out his bagel and with his available arm he pulled Jess close. He kissed her passionately.

Jess understood the importance of Mark's kiss. She allowed herself to be swept away in the picturesque moment, complete with her foot pop.

"I have to go." Mark said breaking the kiss. He held her to his chest and looked down. I want you to just be yourself. You don't need to impress him. Just have fun, there aren't any expectations one way or another. Call me by 8pm, tonight. Seriously. Have a great time and be careful. I love you. He kissed her lips quickly, while turning to the door.

He stopped. "Come back home to me." He said genuinely with lots of love.

"I love you too!" Jess said loudly so he could hear.

Now, she had a plan that needed to be executed.

Jess organized her thoughts. She was being picked up at 1pm. She had hair, makeup, nails, coffee, dress fitting, shaving, moisturizing, dressing, shower, tweezing....

Jess caught her breath and relaxed. First, I'm going to Starbucks. Jess left the house. She woke from the coffee then pampered herself as she prepared.

Mark was at the office working on an upcoming installation. His phone vibrated. He was giddy hoping Jess was about to tell him something. He looked. It was a text from Kim.

It read: TODAY IS THE DAY, call if you have any updates. I will do the same then a heart and smiling face emoji.

Mark replied: Will do

Then he paused for a moment and went back to work.

He assessed his mental state. He did not know how he felt. He was happy, but maybe not excited. He was anxious to find out about her date. He was happy for Jess. He felt love for her, unconditionally. He had a deep sexual urge for this, but he could not explain it. He was unsure about what other feelings he felt.

He just went on with his day.

Jess had been getting stuff DONE. She was finishing up and it was 12:45pm. She was so happy! She didn't have to make Charles wait! She looked in the mirror at herself double-checking and triple checking everything. She checked her beach bag again.

Just then her phone went off. I hope Charles isn't running late she thought. She pulled her phone out of her bag and entered the annoying passcode. It was a text from Kim.

It read: Have a great time! Relax! Call me Later I want details!

Jess laughed. She was giddy with excitement and hoped the date went well.

She texted back: Ok, we will see! Love you with a kissy face and a smiling face emoji.

Then she sat on the tan leather couch in the living room. Its soft cushions swallowed her. Kim leaned her head back and relaxed.

Two minutes later the door rang.

Kim answered it. "Hello," she smiled.

"Hey!" Charles smiled back. He leaned in and hugged her.

"This place we are going to is great!" Charles excitedly told Jess. "It's a great place to relax."

"I see you've got your swimsuit and I've got everything else." Charles said, looking at Jess.

He noticed her hair was styled a little differently. It could be a casual or formal look. She wore a yellow flower behind her ear. Her blue eyes shined against the backdrop of her blonde hair. Her tanned skin radiated. Her conservative black bikini had matching yellow flowers and green vines throughout. A sheer black cover up hung on her perfect hips. Her smooth legs shined down to her feet where her black sandals had a matching yellow flower on the top of her foot. Her nails all matched. The color was called tropical yellow.

Charles looked excitedly. Then he looked again and smiled. "You look great!" He said spacing out every word for effect.

"Thank you," Jess smiled happily. She knew Charles liked what he saw. It made the rush of the whole morning worth his one look.

"Are you ready?" He asked politely.

"Yes! Let's get going. I've got an appointment with the sun." Jess said walking out the door.

Charles grabbed her bag and followed, closing her front door behind him. "Just this bag?" he asked following two steps behind her.

"Yes!" She answered. "Thank you for carrying that."

"You're welcome." Charles told Jess as they made their way to the parking garage.

"And did you say you have an appointment with the sun?" Charles asked Jess a little confused and mockingly.

Jess turned and smiled embarrassedly for Charles to see.

They reached Charles' SUV. He drove a silver Yukon. It was a couple of years old, but he kept it in really good condition. It was always maintained meticulously.

He opened the door for Jess. "Use that handle, if you need it," Charles pointed above the dashboard.

Jess got in and sat. She moved her butt around and got comfortable. "Thank you." She said to Charles as he closed the door.

Charles opened the door behind Jess and put her bag down. "Your stuff is right here if you need it." Charles told Jess from the back seat.

"Ok!" He heard her say softly.

Charles hopped in the driver's seat and started the car. They left quickly. He adjusted the radio volume and moved the air conditioning vents away from Jess.

"Let me know if you get cold." Charles told her, looking to make sure she would.

Jess nodded. She moved around in the big seat a little more. Her shoulders weren't wide enough for the arm rests, so she tried to make do.

"So, I've got these very wealthy clients that I've known for years that allow me to use their beach. It's beautiful and private. I've only been out a handful of times, but every time has been nice!" Charles explained the situation clearly.

"That's nice they let you do that." Jess said.

He looked over and down, obviously staring at Jess' legs. She crossed them and looked at Charles, looking at her legs still. Charles looked up at her and smiled, knowing he had been caught. Jess smiled back playfully and shook her head.

A moment passed.

Jess jumped into serious matters. "So, let's talk!" She gathered her thoughts. "I've never done this kind of thing. I want to get your opinion on setting some boundaries." She looked at Charles.

Charles looked at her for a moment then back to the road. "Sounds like a good idea." He spoke truthfully.

"Should we or should we not talk about Kim and Mark?" Jess asked with a straightening posture.

Charles thought about her question. "I understand that talking about them could seemingly diminish the importance of our time or bond together, but we are here with permission from our friends and spouses. They are too important and too involved in both of our lives. We must talk about them. I love them!" Charles had become spiritual.

"Ok, I feel the same way. I want to be open and honest, with everyone...and myself." Jess said, trying to open her thoughts.

Jess pondered.

"If this goes anywhere, we need to have strong communication." Jess motioned with her hands back and forth.

"I completely agree. I will work on that." Charles said, easing Jess' worries.

"We're almost there!" Charles turned down a gravel road in the woods.

Jess looked at the undisturbed vegetation and a road that seemed to be disappearing. It started to get dark, and creepy.

A couple of minutes later they crossed a small bridge.

"This bridge is the inland canal, then on the other side of the beach is the ocean." Charles told Jess as she looked at the water. Charles pulled into a small parking area.

"Let's check it out!" Charles exited the car excitedly.

"Come on let's go this way!" He led Jess down the path.

Jess became a little worried. She hadn't planned on hiking and her attire and footwear were not going to be comfortable.

Less than a minute later the vegetation instantly stopped and opened into the most beautiful beach. The water was clear, and the waves were small. It was intimate and so picturesque!

"What do you think?" Charles asked. He walked beside Jess to the water.

Jess felt the soft sand in her shoes. She stopped. "I love it! This place is amazing!" She said to Charles, who stood next to her admiring her beauty.

She took off her sandals and felt the sand on her toes, as she buried them. She turned to Charles in amazement. "Thank you for taking me here."

Charles motioned with his hand. "Let me carry those." He took Jess' shoes from her hand.

Jess looked down, flattered.

They continued walking to the water.

Charles took off his boat shoes and stood in very shallow water with Jess.

"It's nice and warm too," she exclaimed as the water rushed against their legs.

Jess turned her head and looked down the beach. A worn and beaten gazebo stood on the sand. Jess wanted to look closer, but she was uncomfortable telling Charles for some reason.

They took in the scenery and walked down the beach. He carried both sets of shoes as they splashed their way closer to the rotting pile of wood that was no longer the perfect place it had been, overlooking the water.

Jess looked out in the bay. She saw fins. She saw three dolphin fins! "Look! Dolphins, there's dolphins!" Jess bounced on her toes with excitement as she pointed and stopped.

Charles stopped with her. He smiled, watching her wonderful excitement. Then he turned and admired nature's beauty. They watched the dolphins play, racing back and forth until they swam back out to sea.

"I can't believe we saw that!" Jess was so excited. She told Mark with wide eyes and a huge smile.

"I know, they were pretty cool to see." Charles replied.

Jess walked further out into the water. She bent down and swirled her hands in it then she looked out as far as she could see and gazed for a moment.

Charles watched. He only watched her. He watched the wind blow through her hair. He knew the place he was at was filled with beauty and wonder, but she was far more wonderous than it all. He stood still and waited.

Jess turned around and looked at Charles. Charles was still staring. She smiled and looked down at the water, she blushed.

Jess walked back to Charles thankful they were able to share this place.

They slowed their pace and their minds. Charles and Jess didn't need to talk, they bonded just from listening.

Time had passed, and they had circled all the way back from their romantic walk.

"What do you think about this spot?" Charles asked Jess.

"I love that it's in the shade. Why? What do you think about this spot, Charles?" Jess asked quick-wittedly.

Charles laughed. "I think this is a good spot for a picnic, are you hungry?" He asked, hoping she was.

"Yes, I am famished. That's sounds great!" Jess became excited about the idea of a picnic.

"Ok, let me go get some stuff." Charles dropped the shoes and walked to the SUV. It was only a couple of minutes away.

He returned five minutes later pulling a cart loaded with food and supplies.

First, he pulled out two beach chairs. He unfolded the first one and set it next to Jess. "Here you go!" He said patting it.

Then he pushed the other aside and rustled through the cart. He pulled out a small cooler and opened it. Inside he had everything prepared. He gave Jess a cup of lemonade with a lid on it.

"One second," He rummaged some more. "Here it is!"

He turned back to her with a straw and a little green umbrella.

She laughed. It became apparent he had worked hard planning this out. "Thank you," she said sweetly.

Charles continued. He laid out a blue plaid picnic blanket, removing the yellow tag that read picnic blanket 10x10, trying carefully to hide it from Jess.

He set up the other chair on it and helped Jess move to the new location.

After Charles perfectly arranged the setting, they ate. Charles had picked up Subway on his way to pick up Jess.

Jess was content, Charles had been perfect.

They ate quietly and just enjoyed the magical aurora.

After Charles finished his sandwich, he pointed to the cart and said, "I brought some blow-up loungers for the water, or if you're interested there are kayaks and paddleboards we can use."

"That's cool!" Jess said, thinking about the decision.

"I could go kayaking," she said.

"There is a cool spot back there." Charles said, pointing into the woods.

Jess looked worriedly.

"I'll show you!" Charles assured her.

They took their time finishing up with a few funny stories. Charles was showing Jess her options of beach toys and things he had brought, when Charles came across something in the cart he had forgotten. He sighed, disappointed he had not used it.

Jess looked to see what Charles was disappointed about. He had forgotten the candle. Charles had a citronella candle for romantic effect.

Jess smiled and laughed lightly. Charles looked at her wonderingly. She put her hand on Charles shoulder gently and said, "thank you for everything, this has been perfect." Jess was sincere and didn't care about the missing candle. Charles had exceeded all expectations with this amazing date, and it wasn't anywhere close to being over.

Charles smiled and forgot about the candle.

"Come on are we going kayaking?" Jess enthusiastically asked.

"Yes, it's this way." Charles led the way down the sand to a path in the woods.

Jess looked on apprehensively, not sure she wanted to go into the vegetation.

"It's not far, and it's worth it!" Charles said excitedly.

Jess followed.

The path lasted only one minute and opened into a beautiful oasis. A small beach was situated up against a natural canal. Beautiful flowers and trees shielded its view hiding the gem from the world.

Jess stood amazed! "I can't believe stuff like this exists!" She exclaimed at a loss for words. She stared and stared taking it all in.

Once again, Charles did the same watching Jess.

"God, I want to live here!" Jess said still taking it in.

Charles waited. He didn't want to rush Jess.

Finally, Jess turned back to look at Charles. "It's so amazing!" She said to him again.

She took a few steps back standing next to Charles. She took his hand and held it, sharing the moment. They continued looking at the water, sand, trees, flowers, birds, fish, and everything else nature had to offer.

"Ok, I'm ready!" Jess turned around excited for the next thing Charles would surprise her with.

They stood face to face. She looked at him unsure and let the moment pass.

"Let's get a kayak!" Charles changed the subject.

Jess followed him over to the water. There were a couple of canoes, three kayaks, and two paddleboards ready to launch.

"We have a dilemma," Charles joked. "This kayak is a two person." He paused as Jess looked.

"Are you good at working with others?" Charles asked.

"I'm excellent at working with others." Jess bragged about herself jokingly.

"Ok then, we'll go out together." Charles said. He walked back to the small beach and took off his shirt. Jess watched.

Charles continued to take off his signature linen pants, leaving only his American flag board shorts for swimming.

Jess followed and threw her cover up next to his clothes.

Charles tried his best not to check out Jess. He knew what that fragile piece of fabric was covering and had been grateful until now.

"Let's do it!" Charles said, looking at Jess briefly then walking toward the small boat. He was slightly aroused and hoped Jess could not tell.

Charles stood knee deep in the shallow canal and held the boat for Jess. She stepped in and sat quickly, knowing how to expertly maneuver here.

"So, you've done this before?" Charles asked, knowingly.

"Yes! I love this. I have been kayaking since high school. I do it a lot to think and clear my head," Jess told Charles.

"I think you have told me that before." Charles replied honestly.

"I go out all the time, why haven't you ever been out with me?" He asked.

"I guess I like to go alone. Kinda my Zen thing." She answered, opening up.

"Oh, ok. I understand." Charles empathized.

"I love my meditation time." He told her, as he got in the plastic boat with Jess.

They pushed out together and slowly paddled drifting in the calm water. They looked all around. There was so much to see.

They talked quietly without disrupting nature. It was a relaxing adventure.

"Jess, what does your tattoo mean?" Charles asked as he sat behind her.

Jess knew Charles was looking at her body; he was referring to her tramp stamp. She was a little hesitant. "I got that in my very early 20s. It's a Japanese sign."

Charles could hear her hesitancy. He decided not to press. "I like it!"

Jess continued on.

"Did Kim help you plan all this out?" Jess asked Charles. "She knows all my preferences!"

"No. I planned it all." Charles said honestly.

"Really?" Jess asked, both surprised and curious.

"Yes." Charles paused. "I thought it would need to be genuine from me. I don't want us to be together because I had a cheat sheet. It wouldn't be truthful."

"I understand. More heart felt." Jess said, turning her head.

They ran the kayak into the bank, arriving back at the starting point.

"Can we lay and get some sun?" Jess asked Charles.

"We can do anything you want." Charles replied with a large smile, glad Jess wanted to do more.

Charles picked up the clothes and walked back to the picnic area, closely following Jess.

"Here are some big towels," Charles bent down and pulled them from the cart.

He walked out of the tree lined shade into the sun. "Can I put them here?" He asked Jess.

She looked up to find the sun and back down to find the direction. "Yeah! That spot is perfect."

Charles laid two very large towels out. "I'll be back," he said as he walked away.

Charles came back with his hands filled. Jess was already lying face down, getting baked in the hot sun.

"I brought some tanner for you and some water." Charles leaned down to put it next to Jess.

"Thank you, I could use some water." Charles turned the cap and handed it to her. She leaned on her side and took a drink.

Charles couldn't help but stare at Jess. She looked great.

Charles went back and looked in the cart, he grabbed a blow-up raft and took it back to Jess.

He sat down beside her and started blowing. "What's that?" She asked turning her head and opening her eyes.

"If you want to get into the water later." Charles said. "Or, maybe I'll use it." He thought out loud.

"Is it a two person?" Jess asked, with her face buried in the towel.

"No, it's just a one." Charles answered.

He started blowing again, turning his head to look at Jess. She crossed her ankles and wiggled her toes.

God! Charles thought to himself.

"What kind of tanner do you have?" Jess asked in a muffled voice.

"The kind you use. Kim told me." Charles replied, glad he had asked his wife.

"Put some on me." Jess told Charles.

Charles did not need to be told twice. He quickly got the bottle and closely sat next to Jess.

He poured the tanner down each of Jess' long legs, one at a time. Charles slowly rubbed it in being as thorough as possible. He rubbed her calves and moved to her feet.
