Mario opened the door for his wife Cadence as they entered the holiday party hosted by his employer, Vanguard Innovations. They were a mid-sized company focused on creating radically new technologies for military applications. He was a research and development engineer and was proud of the work he contributed to. Mario was happy they had decided to host this party and allow spouses to attend. Due to the nature of their work, he wasn't allowed to reveal much about what he did to his wife. This was a rare opportunity to share with her some of his work.
The two of them migrated between various groups, where she said hello to familiar faces and was introduced to new ones. All the while, Mario kept them moving towards what he really wanted her to see. In the corner of the party room, a few of the research staff had set up a demonstration of the company's most promising technological development. They called it Suggestion Coercion. Anyone within a few feet of the device, when activated, would feel strongly encouraged to perform a task they would normally not do.
"Like anything? What will it make you do," Cadence asked, intrigued.
"In the case of this demo, you will hold a glass of water, and the device will attempt to convince you to pour it over your head," Mario explained.
"But I don't want to do that. It will ruin my hair and makeup that I spent so much time on."
"Don't worry. All the device is capable of is making you feel just a bit compelled to do it but not actually go through with it. It turns the idea in your head from what you initially thought to be a terrible one to one that you think maybe it wouldn't be the worst, but I'm still not going to do it. Here, I'll go first and show you," Mario said, approaching the demonstration.
He was handed a full glass of water, and he stood there as the machine was activated. The red indicator light came on. Despite initially having no intention of soaking himself in water, a thought popped into his head. 'It could feel kind of good to pour the water over me. But I shouldn't.' He sat the water down as the machine deactivated. "You see? I felt the slightest of urges to do so, but that's all it was. If you try it yourself, you'll understand what I mean."
Cadence approached the device slowly and wearily. Mario continued to reassure her as she was handed the water. "But what if it does make me pour water on myself. I'll look ridiculous all evening," she whined.
"Look around at everyone here. They've all already done the demo, and none of them are wet. The device is in the very early stages and doesn't make you do anything. Trust me."
Taking a deep breath, she gave the okay to the researchers. The light on the device came on, and Mario knew she was now feeling the slight suggestion and would understand her worries were for nothing. She then dumped the entirety of the water onto herself.
All nearby conversations went silent as attention was fully on the sight of his now-soaked wife. The stunned researchers turned off the device but otherwise did not know how to react. Cadence turned to Mario with a huge smile.
"God, I needed that. That water felt amazing. Shall we go get some drinks," she asked him. She was acting like she did nothing strange at all.
"Cadence. Why did you do that? You're a mess now," her husband asked.
"Because I wanted to. The water looked so cool and refreshing. I just had to feel it on my hair and skin. Do you think they'll give me another glass to pour on myself if I ask? I'm going to go check." Before he could object, she rushed over to the researchers, who watched as she helped herself to three more glasses of water, which she dosed herself in.
The party crowd was now watching and whispering to each other. Mario also noticed the head scientist in the crowd looking eagerly at his wife with eyes full of possibilities.
"We should go now," he said, taking his wife by the hand.
"Now? Didn't the party just start," she asked. He didn't answer her, and they made their way to the car and drove home.
In the car, Mario worried what this could mean. "What happened in your head when the Suggestion Coercion device was turned on? Did it tell you to do that," Mario asked, a bit panicked.
"What? It didn't do anything. What are you talking about?" Hearing that gave him no comfort.
Luckily, back at home, Cadence didn't continue to pour water on herself. When he questioned her, she simply said she had no desire to soak herself in water. Unless it was with more water from those glasses at the party. She asked if he could bring her some next time he went to the office. Right before bed, Mario received a mandatory meeting invite first thing in the morning. He knew this had to be about what nearly the entire company witnessed tonight.
After a sleepless night, he arrived at the meeting, and his suspicions were confirmed. The meeting was headed by the research lead at the company, Dr. Fischer. "Mario, thank you for joining us this morning. What we observed with your wife... Cadence, I believe her name is? Anyhow, the reaction she had to the Suggestion Coercion device is nothing less of a breakthrough for us. You are aware of how little progress we've made without a single subject exhibiting anything beyond the slight suggestive feeling in their heads. Cadence, on the other hand, was completely obedient to the device's instructions."
He stopped for a moment as if what he would say next would be obvious. Not understanding what was being proposed but feeling the pressure to respond, Mario awkwardly spoke up. "Oh, I agree, sure. Suggestion Coercion was amazing last night. What did the boys change that made it so effective?"
"You misunderstand Mario. That was the same device with which we have been testing subjects for almost two years now. No modifications at all. It's your wife that was the key difference," Dr. Fischer said.
"My wife? She's just...," Mario started to say before the doctor cut to the chase.
"We will give her a generous salary with full benefits. Let's say 200k per year. She will need to agree to our testing and conditions. Nothing that will put her in danger, I assure you. If you could have her sign the documents and bring them back here before the end of the day, that would be ideal." A packet of papers was handed to the bewildered husband.
"200k? Testing? What's going on," Mario asked, looking around at the dozen executives staring at him impatiently. Dr. Fischer waved to someone to try and get him on the same page as them. A young woman spoke up.
"We want to hire your wife for the purpose of testing and determining why Suggestion Coercion worked so well on her. All she would need to do is agree to be monitored as the device is used on her."
Mario's mind swirled with what this could mean. 200 thousand dollars was over double his own salary. However, he appreciated that this would basically be a group of men testing a mind-control device on his wife. That could prove... problematic. Some very provocative situations popped into the husband's head. However, his reaction to those situations wasn't negative. Instead, he found it oddly intriguing. He shook his head and knew he wouldn't let things come to that.
