Meena had just finished her third year of college and needed a place to stay for a few weeks during summer. Edna, a family friend in her early 50s was happy to let Meena stay with her for as long as she needed. She calls her Aunt Edna affectionately even though they are not related.
When she arrived at Edna's, she was greeted with a warm hug. Edna told her to leave her things upstairs in the guest room and come down and make herself comfortable on the sofa in the living room. Edna was busy running back and forth between the kitchen and dining area getting things ready for a small dinner party she was hosting for three of her friends. The dining area was a corner of the living room, a few feet away from the sofa and TV.
"Is there anything I can do to help you get dinner ready, Aunt Edna?"
"No dear, you just relax and watch some TV."
One by one, Edna's friends arrived. Maureen came first. Edna introduced Maureen to Meena. Maureen greeted her and headed over to the dining table as she wanted to let Meena continue watching her TV show. Edna and Maureen sat at the dining table and started chatting.
Next Ruth arrived. A few minutes later Hanna reached. They both met Meena, said hello and settled at the dining table with Edna and Maureen. They joined the conversation with Edna and Maureen while Meena continued watching TV. Like Edna, her friends Maureen, Hannah and Ruth were all in their early 50s.
Edna glanced over from the table and asked Meena if she would like an iced tea before dinner, as it might be a little while before dinner was ready.
"An iced tea sounds great"
"I'll bring one over for you dear" Edna said cheerfully.
Edna brough over a tall glass of cold iced tea and kept it on a coaster on the coffee table in front of Meena. As she was about to head back to the dining table to her friends, she glanced at Meena's pink cotton pants and noticed a small tear near the knee.
"Oh dear, looks like you got a small tear on your pants there Meena, you want me to stitch that for you later?"
"Sure Aunt Edna, that would be great, thank you! Looks like it tore on the bus ride over here. This is one of my favourite pants"
"Edna, get me the sewing kit, I would be happy to stitch that up for the sweet girl right now," Maureen said cheerfully, "you know I love to sew!"
"Thank you Maureen, I will go grab it right now."
Edna went to her room and returned with the sewing kit and handed it over to Maureen at the dining table. She then came over to Meena.
"Be a dear and take off your pants Meena. Maureen here will have it good as new for you in a jiffy."
"Okay let me run upstairs and change."
"It's okay dear, just take it off here. You had a long day today, you just sit and relax, don't tire yourself out running up and down the stairs." Edna said in a kind tone.
