Lucille stared at the screen for a long time. The girl on the window labelled 'Webcam' stared back. She looked the same. She had the same brown hair, the same half ponytail, the same round eyes, the same button nose. But she was not the same girl.
The girl on the screen was Lucy - the name she called herself online, the name she streamed with. Lucy was a fake name, Lucille was her real one. Lucy loved talking about herself with the friends and strangers who made up her chat, Lucille could barely get words in during conversations. Lucy would smile and put on a show, Lucille was the one whose social battery needed to recharge afterward.
Lucille took a deep breath. Lucy started the stream.
...
"Hey everybody! It's the girl with kaleidoscope eyes! LucyintheSky!"
Her welcome screen faded out, the music getting mixed with the sound of her voice as the whimsical royalty-free track she'd always used wrapped up. It was a practiced motion by this point to launch a stream, wait a few minutes for people to gather in the chatroom, and then to properly begin so she wasn't just talking to empty space for a few minutes every time. But there were a some things today that made her stream different.
For one, she had not announced this stream before starting it. She went live with the title 'Reacting to Niche-con!' with no prior warning. Lucille had not been online much for the last few days - not since Niche-con last week.
Typically, the week after Niche-con was the busiest week of a streamer's life whether they were a large channel promoting themselves using their recorded antics at the event or a smaller channel trying to track down the others they spent their time with to stay connected. But Lucille stayed offline for this week as she couldn't bear to risk seeing certain pictures of herself that may have been taken. All made worse by the fact that through the whole thing, she was wearing a nametag with 'LucyintheSky' on it.
holy shit its really her
She's real? I thought N.TV hired whores.
viral marketing works lol
Her gaze glanced down to the corner of her second monitor. It took a while for her brain to register what she was seeing - the number didn't reflect what she normally saw. Nor did it reflect what she was prepared to see. She had expected the stunt 'LucyintheSky' pulled might have attracted a few extra viewers, but even though her stream just started that number was well over one-thousand.
"Wow, there are... a lot of Diamonds here today!" Lucille tried to play dumb as to why this was.
"Oh, for those who aren't familiar, fans of this channel are called Diamonds." She pointed to herself. "I'm Lucy. The channel's 'LucyintheSky'. You're all Diamonds. Get it?"
She chuckled to herself for her pun. Even after a few years, she still found it clever to point out to newer viewers. Of course, new viewers were usually counted in the single digits - maybe a dozen if she was playing something popular. She had never streamed to over one thousand viewers before, although introducing herself to a thousand people versus ten felt the same.
"I haven't really been online for the last few days," Lucy began. "I was just kinda burnt out and stuff after... After Niche-con."
She still felt awkward acknowledging Niche-con, but knew it would have to be done eventually. Still, the words caught in her mouth now that that event was associated with her little stunt.
oh she brought it up
Lucy was at nichecon? I dont follow socials.

"Yeah, so..." Lucy swallowed. "I was at Niche-con last weekend. I went for the whole three days, actually.
"I wonder how many people knew that? Most people probably only saw me on the last day since that's when I was, you know... Walking around."
Lucille's face was all smiles, but beneath her desk her hand was squeezing her knee so hard her knuckles were white. It wasn't too late to shut down the stream and pretend it never happened, was it? She could just shut down the computer, keep her socials muted, and then curl up in a ball for the rest of her life.
But there was something wrong about that. What she did, she did for a reason. Even if that reason was something she still didn't understand. If she just pretended that day had never happened, then did that make the entire thing pointless? That was almost worse than the alternative.
"But yeah, so, uh..." Lucille was never great at speaking - the subject matter today made it no easier. "Like the stream's title says, today I am going to be reacting to Niche-con!"
are you even allowed to show that
ban speedrun incoming
I'm out of the loop. Why are there so many people here?
"The first part of the stream is going to be pictures I took myself, but after that I'm going to be scrolling through some of the hashtags about the event. So if you have any videos or photos you wanna share, go ahead and post them online. Oh, and the hashtag I'm using is in the description of the stream, so you can find it there if you click 'show more'."
The difference between her demeanor and the way her chat was hyping themselves up was obvious - so obvious that continuing to ignore it was only making it more blatant. She was worried that people were going to think she was doing it to be a tease. The truth was that she could barely make herself do it.
So why was she still going? Lucille was so focused on reading her chat and setting up the files for her stream that she didn't have the time to think about this. Perhaps that was on purpose.
The first picture Lucille pulled up was a normal selfie from outside the venue with the convention center in the background.
"This is from the first day of the event. Or maybe it was the second.
"The convention center looks really cool from the outside, I really loved the way it juts out into the harbor so you can see it from like half the city. I had one picture that was just the building, but then I realized that it looks like every other picture of the building that you can get on a postcard.
"So I took this one to prove that I had been there. Well, that and the line to get in was super long. I think I was out there for like, maybe two hours?"
she's dressed in this one?
NUDES WHEN?

awkward angle lmao
"This next photo," She started, then took a deep breath and started again. "This next one is from shortly after I got inside. I'm showing off the badge I got with my username."
Lucille took careful note of her outfit for the first time. It was as simple as clothing got; A plain white tank-top with a sports bra underneath for comfort. Jean shorts that went a bit past her knees. Tennis shoes, and the same faded green backpack she'd taken to school so many years ago. When she picked out that outfit, it was purely functional - something that could be worn for a long time in a hot room with a bunch of people walking around.
"I think if I ever knew I would be wearing my username as a badge I would have picked something shorter." She tried to joke - totally unaware if the joke landed or not. She could barely stand to watch her chat. "But it still felt really cool to have on. Like I was a part of something."
Lucille proceeded to click through a few more photos from her trip, most of which were just of different booths that looked neat, some art she liked (but not enough to buy) and one or two blurry images of live concerts she saw. Overall it wasn't a great slideshow, but most people were playing along well enough. Although that was probably because of the bans being handed out by a few of the long-time chat members she'd elevated to moderator status.
"So that wraps up the first two days of Niche-con," Lucille choked back a nervous sigh. "I didn't really take any pictures of the last day at all because of... you know.
"But I'm going to check on my hashtags now to see if there are one or two that I can talk abou -
"Oh my God!"
It was the first time Lucille had opened her social media feed since last weekend. Part of her was expecting to see a few dozen photos of her, part of her was expecting the account to be banned. But another part of her had dreaded a third option - that her stunt had reached far further than she ever expected it to. The sheer number of unread notifications proved that the third thing had happened.
As it turns out, the notification icon capped out at 999 new messages. She felt her hands shaking.
"So - that - that - I, uh..." Lucille let out an awkward laugh as the number appeared on-screen. "That is a lot of notifications. Let's start at the beginning."
She clicked her notifications and saw the point where her feed had left off. It was a picture taken by her friend, Penny, while they were at one of the live concerts together. The background was a wave of penlights of the same color, illuminating the edges of her face as she looked up at the stage with a blank expression.
"This picture was uploaded by my good friend, Penny." Lucy pointed at the black-haired girl at the corner of the picture. The girl's long, black hair was messy from a tough day selling her work in the artist's gallery - and the multiple pins along the straps of her backpack as well as the rolled-up posters sticking out of it showed exactly what she'd spent that day's money on.
"Make sure you follow her channel, too! That's pennysLane over in the Art section. She does a lot of chill drawing streams and has kinda the same tastes as me."
penny is hot
When does she start stripping?
that band was awesome!!
