The main character is the same Bryan from "Airtight -- The videographer", but this event took place a year or so after that story and is completely unrelated.

My name is Bryan and I'm not a professional videographer, but it is a hobby I enjoy, and people here at my university know that about me. Not everything I've done has been public, but I've produced a couple of class presentations that people noticed. I'm also active in the AV club so I have access to the schools equipment for sanctioned projects. That is how I got involved with the ballroom dance teams first local competition.
I didn't really know what I was getting into when I agreed to lead the AV team, but it was a very exciting event. A little more exciting than it was supposed to be, as it turns out.
Since this was the first dance competition event on our campus, held in the spring semester. The university didn't know what to expect so the main room was a large practice room that was thirty feet deep and fifty feet long. One of the long walls was covered in mirrors up to about fifteen feet, although the ceiling was a lot higher. The floor was some kind of pale yellow wood, and was really smooth and shiny. I thought that was a huge space, but I overheard lots of the dancers saying that the dance floor was too small. Even I knew it was too small to include an audience, though.
Our job was to set up cameras and "broadcast" the event to other rooms in the building that the teams were using as changing rooms. All of those other meeting rooms already had large display screens for videoconferencing so the rest of the teams could see what was going on even if they weren't in the performance space.
The cameras were really slick; we had two towers, each with two cameras. On each tower one of the cameras was static but the other was mobile and controlled by remote to be able to track specific couples. The towers were in the corners of the room opposite the mirror, so sometimes we got a forward and rear view of dancers at the same time. I had the guys running the cameras sitting right beneath their towers. I was in the hallway outside with monitors set up so that I could choose which of the cameras we would send to the live feed.
I wasn't actually paying attention to what the announcer was saying so I don't know the specific styles of dancing they were doing, but there were two groups; one that moved around the room and the other where the couples mostly stayed in place. While doing the dances that moved around the dance floor the women usually wore long dresses. Some of them wore skimpier skirts and halter tops while doing the dances that didn't move around. The guys mostly looked the same all day long. They wore tight black pants, white shirt and black tie. Some of them wore a vest. Overall there were more women than men, so some of the women danced together with one of them dressing as a guy. Although they always said "leader" for whoever was dancing as the man.
The whole day was very complicated. There were the different styles of dance, and each of those was split up into different skill levels. Obviously there were a lot more of the beginning level dancers, so those heats had lots of participants. Some of the advance levels only had four or five couples on the floor at a time. It was one of those where the excitement happened.
I noticed that some of the women traded dresses between heats so a single dress, or sometimes top/skirt combo, showed up several times during the day. A lot of the women had similar body types; often tall, thin, and athletic, so the costumes were interchangeable. The guys all dressed the same all day, so I don't know if they traded clothes, but I doubt it.
I do know that number 146 did not trade clothes with the other women. She was of a similar height and general body shape, but her breasts were larger than the other women. I knew her in passing from around campus, and I saw her several times over the course of the day. She had a couple of fancy dresses for the traveling dances but it was obvious that her bust had grown recently; she was practically mashed into the tops of them. The first of the skimpy costumes was fine, it seemed to fit her well, but the second was too small. And that is where the excitement came in.
Her second costume was a bright green with long tassels all over the dress; the tassels would flair up when she turned quickly, which she did several times. She and her partner were dancing in one of the non moving dances, Cha Cha I learned later while reviewing the recording, at the far end of the competition space for one of the advanced heats. There were only four couples on the floor so we were getting good coverage of all four couples when she and her partner did some kind of underarm spinning throwaway thing where she and her partner ended up side by side with their arms spread out. They were facing right at static camera one.
During the spin her top had busted loose and it flew several feet across the floor before bunching up against the wall. It also turns out that mobile camera one was following them, and that camera was focused in more closely. It showed her breasts flow to the side and then bounce back into place. It took a beat before she realized what was happening and she dropped her partners hand and covered herself with her arms. It was clear in the video that she glanced toward her discarded top but choose to abandon it and run for the exit.
I can't blame the camera guys, they tracked the excitement. Mobile one followed her out of the room, and mobile two turned to her as soon as he realized what was happening, getting a clear picture of her reddened face and naked upper body. By the time mobile two focused on her she was already running toward the exit, and therefore also straight at static two.
The one brief flash probably would have been fine if the other competitors had realized what was happening, but they didn't and they kept dancing. Unfortunately 146 was super focused on getting out of the room and didn't see another couple spin out in front of her and she crashed into the other woman, sprawling them both onto the floor. Obviously she let go of her breasts to keep from smashing into the floor as she fell and rolled. At least the dance dresses and skirts have built in underwear parts that match the costume so nothing more was flashed.
146 was sprawled out on the floor for a second before turning over and using both hands to push herself back upright. This left her breasts hanging down in clear view of both mobile two and static two as she stood up, her face beat red, and started running toward the exit again.
I can't blame the camera guys for following the action, but I do blame myself for only then cutting the live feed to the rest of the building. And, as it turns out, to the other schools that had remote viewing parties happening as well. Someone had shared the videoconferencing credentials so other people were also watching remotely. Not many, but a few.
As 146 exited the competition space, her face and upper chest red with embarrassment, a guy from another school held out his partners warm-up shawl and she ran into it, sobbing. Once she was holding it the guy immediately let go of the shawl and stepped back; his partner stepped in to comfort 146. It was nice to see that kind of support between supposed competitors. 146's partner came out immediately afterward carrying her top and hustled her away.
146 and her partner were disqualified from that heat, although due to the disruption they restarted it for the others competitors. The couple did return for another dance later, but she was wearing her original non-tasseled costume. She was obviously the talk of the event and kept blushing every time someone mentioned the flashing incident near her. Honestly I was pretty impressed that she stayed.
We were meant to release the video of the entire event, but I obviously did not include that heat in the official release. I did, however, view it several times from the privacy of my room.
And that is when I saw it, and smiled.
