Vivian read Sam's first email several times trying to make sense of it. She surmised that this email was a clue to decipher the email, that only consisted numbers without any apparent pattern or break for that matter. The email made mention of all the states listed in four different numerical orders. So Vivian made up four tables listing the states by their two letter postal abbreviations. She paid attention to the fact that mention was made that the states were listed in alphabetical order but identified by their two letter postal abbreviation.

She appreciated that the email was stipulated in such fashion to clarify potential confusion. For example, the first two states are a case in point. Alabama is alphabetically ahead of Alaska, but Alabama's abbreviation is AL whereas Alaska is AK suggesting that perhaps the latter state should be listed first. Similarly, Arizona is alphabetically ahead of Arkansas, but the abbreviations are AZ and AR respectively. Since the email clearly stipulated that the states are listed in actual full alphabetical order Vivian made her lists accordingly. She knew she could change that if her decision did not pan out.

Vivian also noted the substitutions of some of states. Alaska is the largest state in area whereas Quebec, abbreviated as "PQ" is the largest province in area of Canada. With such disparity both alphabetically and abbreviation of those two jurisdictions, it reinforced her decision that the states are listed in full alphabetical order since presumably Quebec as PQ is to fill in Alaska's spot. The other substitutions were: Ontario (ON) was the most populous province in Canada to replace California (CA) the most populous state; the capital presumably Washington (DC) to replace Rhode Island, the smallest state; Puerto Rico (PR) the Hispanic territory to replace Delaware (DE); and finally, EESTI in full to replace New York, the empire state.

In Vivian's mind there was no doubt the last referenced substitution was for her benefit. She of course had given full explanations of her tattoos on her thighs and the significance of the same to Sam. In addition, she also revealed the reasons for wearing two body chain belts as well as her four ankle bracelets. Luckily as far as Vivian could tell, Sam did not react negatively to her past. As he was wont to say he preferred to have a woman who truly enjoys sex whole heartedly without any reservations. The email presumably providing clues started with the salutation: "Dearest Vivian". Surely, if the numbered email was to be converted into a letter form, then "Dearest Vivian" would most likely be the same salutation as well.

Vivian then felt she was on to something. The first numbers were "0405011805192030". She noticed that if you consider only and exactly two digits at a time you get an alphabetical order: '04' fourth letter of the alphabet is 'd', '05' is 'e', and by golly as you continue two digits at a time, you do get 'dearest' followed by a space. Alas the next numbers are "2323090136" which suggests 'w', 'w', 'i', 'a' and then the number 36 which has no corresponding letter in the alphabet. Not close at all to 'Vivian' as to be expected.

After a few minutes of deliberation, the idea light shines in Vivian's mind. The four lists of states, that she had painstakingly colligated were labeled 'WW', 'XX', 'YY' and 'ZZ'. So, the letters 'ww' must represent the first list of states and 'ia' is the abbreviation for Iowa. Iowa is in 15th place on that list. This suggests the alphabet order changes with the letter 'a' now in the 15th, and thus, the letter 'b' would now be in the 16th position, and so on. In the new order then, in the 36th position would be the letter 'v'. The following numbers "233623152844" then correspond to 'i', 'v', 'i', 'a', 'n' and of course '44' represents a space.

Eureka! Vivian now believed she had cracked the code. The only wrinkle was to recognize that each of the four lists were self contained. Thus, for example if one's using the 'XX' list where you have the state of Washington as your starting point then the first five letters, 'a', 'b', 'c', 'd' and 'e' would bear the numbers: '97, '98', 99, '00' and '01' respectively. And she also could discern the meaning of the last sentence of the instruction email was to advise the letter starts with the 'WW' list with 'a' for Alabama, being the state in number 1 position.

Having successfully deciphered the meaning of Sam's numbers only missive, Vivian set out to translate the same. It was a tedious process, since Sam was continuously changing lists, presumably to make it harder for an unknown party to interfere. In any case Vivian persevered and discovered that the letter read as follows:

"Dearest Vivian

I can resist your beauty, but your engaging personality has captured my heart. I'm enraptured by your witty sharp mind. We are bonded soulmates as evidenced by your ability to read this letter as if I needed any proof. You must be my wife.

Yes this letter is my proposal. Will you consent to be my wife? Please reply by email in this special format that will only have meaning between us. If your reply is affirmative, we can work out the logistics of our wedding in a more orthodox fashion. I await your answer. Don't delay in replying my sweetest Vivian. I can't keep my heart still until I hear from you.

Faithfully yours,

Vivian harrumphed in her mind. Considering this unusual method of proposing, she thought two can play that same game. She would also use this unusual method to impart some news that she would have normally conveyed in a more orthodox fashion. Accordingly, her replay was worded as:

"Dearest Sam

Of course, I'll marry you. Is there any doubt? But we must marry within six months if we wish our child to be born legitimate. That's all she wrote.

Yes, indeed Vivian had just learned for certain that she was pregnant and hadn't told Sam yet. She had never got around to resuming birth control measures after her breakup with Jed Baxter. As she had immediately hooked up with Sam Crawford, she had no desire to utilize birth control protection. Her thought process was similar to her time with Jed Baxter, whom she had banished from her memory. Sam Crawford was as fine a male lover, notwithstanding Jed, as she ever had. Coincidently, Vivian's deliberations in deciding to forgo birth control measures, while cavorting with Sam, followed the same rationale as in the case with Jed. Besides being single, Sam's social standing was equal with hers, so that a marriage would not shock mutual friends and acquaintances. Still, in Vivian's viewpoint a proposal of marriage from him was not a sure thing. Her sister, Erica's acerbic observation suggested that her tattoos on her thighs would be a constant reminder of her past sexual indulgences, which few men could countenance in a wife. Although Sam did not seem to take any offence, still it was enough of a reason for Vivian to doubt whether she would ever marry at all, never mind just contemplating Sam by himself.

The main consideration in Vivian's life at this point was, that she had just turned twenty-nine years of age. Although her biological clock was not yet in jeopardy of running out, still this was the time in her life when she would want to become a mother for the first time. She knew that she would want to be mother for at least one child. Considering there was a reasonable possibility that no man might want to marry her, Vivian was convinced in her own mind that she was willing to go through life as a single mother.

Accordingly, she deliberately refrained from birth control measures, and happily became pregnant rather quickly with Sam, her exclusive lover. She had no inclination as to how Sam would respond, but it did not matter to her. She was ecstatic at becoming pregnant, given her two plus years affair with Jed Baxter that did not see her get pregnant, and a fear that she might be barren was starting to creep into her mind. "Quite true. I had suspected my condition, and when I saw Dr Elizabeth Barrett, my gynecologist/obstetrician, she confirmed it officially. I'm about twelve weeks pregnant and my due date is tentatively in January of the new year. "No of course not my dear Vivian. After all if one does not want children then why get married? In today's mores living together is an acceptable permanent lifestyle."

"Exactly! That's why I mentioned in my letter that we ought to get married before our child is born. If you don't know it already either by law, and you'll acknowledge I'm the expert in that regard between the two of us, or by custom, if marriage takes place before birth, then the child is born legitimate. So, in that vein let's get married in a month's time at the end of August, like the last Saturday."

"Oh OK! No, I mean the wedding date is fine as I have no desire for a prolonged engagement period. Speaking of which I got this present as a result of your agreement."

Sam handed over a leather lined ring box containing a three stone setting, diamond ring weighing approximately two carats. Vivian gasped as she was completely stunned. She surmised that if it was not as expensive as Angela's engagement ring it sure as hell was in the same ball park. She gushed, "Oh wow Sam. That's a gorgeous ring! Magnificent even! I love it! "Of course, I really want to marry you. Why else would I propose?"

"You have to admit that your proposal was not delivered in a recognized approved procedure. That's why I thought of it as a tease by you, and so that's why I indicated my pregnant state."

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"I just told you that I was intending to tell you on tonight's date except for your email communication. It really is the very first opportunity I had to tell you of my pregnancy. There meal continued silently, as Sam pondered for some time before coming up with a reply. "However, sex alone does not make a happy marriage. Since we are to live together it behooves us to determine that we get along. During these past six months, I've been impressed with our conversations. I'm a man who cannot abide a vacuous woman, and one thing is obvious you are not dumb.

"You know there is a famous thesis by Casanova for a prescription to seducing women: assure a beautiful woman she is intelligent; assure an intelligent woman that she is beautiful. So, it follows that if you behold a woman who has both qualities then you have hit the jackpot; you've won the romance lottery of securing the most desirable mate."

At this point Vivian protested, "Oh come on Sam! Me beautiful? Why you would have to admit my sister, who you've met tonight, when she seated us, is far prettier than me."

"Oh Vivian, don't sell yourself short as to your beauty. Your features are striking and stunning, exuding a 'je ne sais quoi' quality of the quintessential female allure. Your sister's good looks on the other hand belong to the 'dime a dozen' variety of good looking. She would only stand out within a group of women who are plain looking. Amongst a group of pretty women, she would be indistinguishable. Whereas you would always be noticed in any kind of a crowd of women."

Vivian, in a jovial mood, was tempted to advise him, that Jed Baxter, her previous lover had said pretty much the same thing. However, she refrained, sensing that it would not be the wisest thing to say. So she asked, "Oh my what pretty words my gallant fiancé! Obviously, I must super reward you tonight, and not just for this gorgeous, exquisite engagement ring. However, I'm still wondering why you chose this exotic form of marriage proposal?"

"For me to consider a wife, aside from desiring a pretty and sexy woman, I value intelligence and a quickness of mind. I had no doubt of your beauty and sexual character, and likewise I appreciate your wit. I was pretty sure you possessed a keenness of mind to be able to analyze correctly the meaning of my emails. I was certain enough that I went out and acquired the ring right after I sent my emails. I believe then, I sent the emails merely to assure in my mind I had made the right decision, since I do look upon marriage as an absolute life time commitment. Though I was certain you could solve my puzzle, I would attribute my sending the email proposal as akin to the practice of pinching oneself to reassure that one is not dreaming, when beautiful events are unfolding."

"Well then, I guess it's a good thing I was able to solve your testing puzzle."

"If you were unable to solve my puzzle, then here in this evening, you would have been treated to a marriage proposal conducted in a normal orthodox fashion. Mind you in such case you might have revealed your pregnancy first, so that my subsequent marriage proposal would have been anti-climatic. Therefore, I guess it is a good thing that you did solve my puzzle after all."

Vivian laughed full heartedly at Sam's explanations. She, thereupon, got off her seat to bestow a solid heart warming and very public kiss on the lips of her fiancé. Erica, in her capacity as owner and manager of the restaurant, sauntered by to enquire of the quality of service they had experienced. This afforded Vivian the opportunity to inform her sister of her engagement, and to display her ring finger containing the fabulous diamond engagement ring that Sam Crawford had acquired for his intended. Naturally Erica rejoiced at Vivian's good fortune and summoned the entire wait staff to offer a typical celebratory sing-song chant congratulating the newly engaged couple.
