Chapter one

Tim Jackman awoke and studied his fiancée, Heidi Tate, who lay on her side next to him, her back to him. Their bedroom glowed with light from the rising sun which was streaming through their bedroom window. It was warm in the room and she had tossed the covers off as she tossed and turned in her sleep.

"Tim, don't give me that sad puppy look," she said, "it isn't going to work. We're getting married tomorrow. You know what that means, don't you?"

"No, I don't know what it means," Tim replied. "I don't have the foggiest idea what you're talking about. Why do I have to leave this morning?"

"The groom isn't supposed to see the bride the day before the wedding," Heidi said. "There's a superstition that it's bad luck if that happens. I'm not sure how I'll get through a whole day without seeing you, but I want our wedding to be perfect. And if following old wife's tales will give us a better chance at happiness, I'll do it."

"Oh," Tim said. "But I gave up my apartment, where am I supposed to go?"

"You can stay at your parents' place tonight," Heidi said. "I've already talked with your mother. She's expecting you."

"Are you really sure you want me to leave?" Tim asked. He began caressing one of her breasts.

She lay in bed, watching Tim dress, and mused about how she and he had gotten to this point in their lives. Their relationship hadn't developed smoothly, that was for sure. They met when Tim was a student at Jamestown High School, where Heidi worked as school nurse. At the time, she was going through a divorce and, without intending to, she found herself having an affair with Tim.

Although Tim was the best lover she ever had, and she cared for him deeply, Heidi convinced herself that her affair with a student, if discovered, would cause both of them problems, so she broke the relationship off. It was one of the hardest decisions she'd ever made, harder even, than deciding to end her marriage.

After the breakup, which came not long before graduation, Heidi didn't see Tim again for a few years - during which she was lonely and miserable. She found him again almost by accident - or perhaps due to an act of fate - when a man she had a few unsuccessful dates with began stalking and terrorizing her and tried to kill her.

Tim, by then a patrolman on the Jamestown Police Department, was one of the police officers who stopped the man who was stalking Heidi. After that incident, their relationship re-kindled and Heidi, finally accepting how she really felt about Tim, agreed to marry him, even though she was much older than he was.

Their wedding was taking place the next day and she was much more excited about it than she was for her first wedding. Tim loved her, she loved him, and the time they'd been together had been the best time of Heidi's life.

Tim walked to the bed, bent down, and kissed Heidi. "Can I at least call you tonight?" he asked.

"Of course you can," Heidi said. "Now go on, get going. Lois is coming over in a little while to help me finish getting ready for tomorrow."

Tim kissed her again. "I love you," he said.

"I love you, too," Heidi replied.
