The Brass Butterfly: Chapter One
The buds were just starting to come out on the cherry trees and the strengthening spring sun brightened the images of phoenixes, dragons, and carp playing along the sides of the buildings and up the supports under the highway overpass. The bricks of the older Beaux-Arts buildings were mottled with age and wear, but occasionally still sported ancient painted advertising for dancing Asian girls, premium Chinese food, and laundry services in six foot tall letters. While the subjects of advertising in the International District hadn't changed much over the years, most of the same messages had been replaced now with neon signs lit up in Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, and Japanese.
It was a rare warm day for early spring in Seattle. Matt and Sara both happened to have a mid-weekday off on the same day, and they had decided to spend it exploring a part of the city they hadn't frequented since college. They had spent the morning at the museums in the area then hit Uwajimaya, the huge Japanese department store for lunch before looking through the various small shops. The men of the shops all seemed eager to help Sara whenever she walked in. At a slender five foot seven, her long black hair and tanned skin perfectly reflected her Polynesian ancestry. She was wearing a red dress that swung playfully around her thighs and showed off her tan and slender legs. She turned heads and a few good discounts wherever she went.
Matt seemed the strange counterpart for her. He was only an inch taller than Sara, but slender and wiry with broad shoulders. His handsome pointed face made him look younger than he was, and was framed by long hair in a ponytail that had been dyed black with bright blue bangs and tips. He mostly wore monochrome t-shirts and jeans sporting band names or sarcastic slogans, and had silver hoops piercing his left eyebrow and ear. But he'd still caught the attention of a few giggling Otaku girls standing in the Anime video section of the Uwajimaya. He'd flashed the girls a wide smile before walking out the door with Sara to their dismay. Which was gratifying to the both of them and they'd laughed about it all the way down the street. They'd met their freshman year in college and been together ever since. Neither of them had gotten around to proposing to the other, but both of them being only 24, there didn't seem to be any rush.
They were about ready to head back to the car when Sara spotted a sign that said "Asian Antiquities" pointing down into a back alley.
"Wait, just one more shop," she said pointing.
"Are you sure? We've just been to four antique shops..." Matt said, looking at his watch.
"Just one more, I promise!"
He rolled his eyes up, pretending to stall, "Weeeelll..."
She grinned at him, "Hey, if I have to suffer through your Anime addiction, you can suffer through my antiquing," she said, grabbing him by the wrist and dragging him down the alley.
The light was dim and the air was filled with incense when they stepped inside. It was difficult to move in the shop, with each shelf packed full of clutter in haphazardly organized sections marked with little handmade Chinese signs neither of them could read. There was an old man in the back dressed in a gray argyle polo shirt with a red silk robe thrown over it as if he had put it on as an afterthought to look more "authentic" for the tourists. He was balding slightly and a long wispy tufts of white hair growing along his upper lip and chin. He sat behind a grimy glass counter holding an Asian newspaper and looked up when they walked in. He had kind eyes, and gave them a small smile and a nod of welcome.
Matt wrinkled his nose at the strong smell of incense and nodded back at the shopkeeper with a slight grimace. Then he looked around, staring at a shelf of vases, rice bowls, and pottery before leaning over and whispering, "Anybody else here getting flashbacks to the movie 'Gremlins?'"
Sara smacked him on the arm, giving him the "shut up!" look, "Maaaatt..."
He gave her that grin of his that he got when he was teasing, "Ok, but if he hands me a Muppet in a box, we are OUT of here."
Sara pursed her lips at him, but couldn't keep the smile off her face, "I don't remember this shop being here. Must've just opened. Oh Matt! Look at this!"
Matt came over and looked over her shoulder as she held up a tarnished brass box. It was octagonal in shape and about six inches across at the longest point and two inches deep. On the sides there was a five-fingered oriental dragon that looked like it was chasing it's tail. On the top was a series of Chinese Hanzi circling the edges with a large one in the middle. Sara tried to open it, but the lid seemed to be stuck. "Isn't it gorgeous?"
Matt shrugged in half-hearted enthusiasm, "Yeah, it's pretty cool."
She nudged him playfully, "Imagine if it was cleaned up. If I could get it open it would make a lovely jewelry box, or I could use it for spare change." She gave him wicked grin and leaned in closer whispering, "Or we could put the condoms in it."
He grinned at her, enjoying even the mention of condoms, "You're terrible at hinting, you know that? How much is it?"
She turned the box over to look at the bright fuchsia price tag reading five dollars on the bottom. "Five bucks."
He took her hand, "Well hey, five bucks for a condom box, sold!"
She beamed and kissed him on the lips, "Thank you, honey!"
He kissed her back and came up to the counter while trying not to brush anything off the shelves on the way back. He plunked the box down along with his wallet in front of the shopkeeper, "We'll take this thing."
Sara sighed and nudged him slightly, "We'll take this thing,
please.
