THE BET - DONNA AND ANN TALK
CHAPTER 1
It was the first week of December. Winter weather had hit, and there was 12 inches of snow on the ground. John Bryce was in LA on a business trip, leaving Donna home alone. William Jarrett called and told Ann he was going to stay in DC rather than risk coming home in the bad weather.
Of course, Don and Billy were at school. They would be coming home on the 20th. for 3 weeks for Christmas break.
Ann and Donna were spending a lot of time together. Not much to do in this weather and the family was all off somewhere. They mostly played cards, watched a few movies, or just had coffee and talked.
One particularly cold and windy day they were sitting in Ann's living room trying to watch a movie, but neither was really getting into it. They turned it off to just talk. The conversation eventually got around to husbands, as it usually did. Both complained about them never being home, not giving them any attention when they were, or generally just being self-centered assholes.
They laughed about this, but it made them sad, too. They agreed that they were grateful they had such a good friend in each other. They hugged and talked about how they missed their boys. Ann asked, "Speaking of which. Did you ever find out what was going on with Don? You said he was acting suspicious?"
"No," Donna replied. "But Billy assured me it was nothing to worry about. Just boy stuff. I believe him."
Ann said, "Billy acts sometimes like he's hiding something, too. I didn't think much about it until you mentioned Don acting that way, too. Kinda made me wonder if they're up to something."
"I'm sure it's nothing to worry about," Donna assured her.
CHAPTER 2
They decided to have a couple of mixed drinks as they were snowed in, anyway. As they drank, the conversation got looser. It turned to sex. Donna was a free spirit in that area. Ann liked to live vicariously through her.
Donna finally asked, "Do you remember when I told you I slept with a younger man?" Ann said she did. "Well, it happened again. Very recently. A couple of times."
"Oh my gosh!" said Ann. "The same one as last time? Never mind. It's none of my business."
"I feel like I need to 'fess up'," said Donna. "But I'm afraid it might ruin our friendship."
This concerned Ann a little. She wondered how it could ruin their friendship. She said, "I don't see how who you sleep with could affect our friendship. Unless it was William. But you said he was younger, so I know it's not."
"Well," said Donna hesitantly, "Yes, I did say younger. And I said recently. You know I haven't been anywhere. Sooo?"
