Ch.4 : Part 3 : Hadigan and Brundige
Hadigan was a Priest of more years than High Priestess Patience. At 57 he was quite mature and had known both of Patience's parents well. Unfortunately neither of her parents were still alive. If they had been alive and in authority she knew there would have been little chance of Patience influencing the direction of the Cult in this way. Hadigan was a High Priest, but not one who expected too much authority from the position. He was a caring and efficient individual, but not one who wished to lead or make the plans.
"You are spending much time at the Palace Patience?" commented Hadigan.
"We have spoken of this before Hadigan. I am residing at the Palace because I can have influence there, influence for good."
"You have influence with the King and with the Prince I see."
"And also with many of the members of the Court. Money has flowed into our coffers and we have expanded the work we carry out. New members have come to the Cult and we are achieving much," said Patience.
"I hear rumours you know," said Hadigan. "You are bringing more success and support than we have had for many years, but at what personal cost. You have been in the Prince's bed, and he consorts with his father's concubine. Is this the price you must pay for their support?"
Hadigan had always had eyes for Brundige. Her beauty was, in many small ways, fading now. The flesh not so smooth, although he had hardly seen any of it anyway. Those robes were so long and so warm. He found himself looking at her neck and imagining the smooth skin below, tapering to ample breasts - He knew they were ample because the shape of her robe was so much more pronounced there at the front and at her backside where there was ample shape. Sometimes in summer the robe would be a little looser and he could see a wider part of the chest, but he never saw the nipples. He had had dreams for many years about what he might find if she were ever to unfasten the belt and let him see. Did she wear any garments underneath the robe? He did not know for sure, even though they were in the same Priesthood. In summer, when it was very warm, probably not, because those robes were very warm. In the winter he himself wore undergarments, but when it was particularly warm in summer he did not, because the robe was very stifling. He imagined it must be the same for the Priestesses. He never felt he could talk about such things, even though in other ways he knew Brundige very well, and they were close friends. He had often wondered if she might feel the same.
Hadigan attended a small gathering of High Priests and High Priestesses at the main Temple in Anachronar, called by High Priestess Patience, who was recognised amongst them as their current Leader of the Cult, although her title remained High Priestess. She was the first amongst equals, but elected amongst themselves and by a college of Cult membership representatives to be the current Leader. Because she was more hardworking than any of them, and because her parents had both been Leaders for some years previously and well respected, and because she was well liked by everyone, and because she had been doing such a great job for so long, she was accepted by most as the High Priestess for the role, and had been for a number of years now, even though she had been for some time the youngest amongst them. Although there had been some who did not choose her they all respected her and had no reason to question or oppose her leadership. Her introduction of new ways into the Cult was subtle at first, and she gave the Priesthood time and understanding to introduce gradual influences and introductions into the priesthood. She knew how to win them over and how not to go about it. Some would be pleased to welcome the changes she intended, whereas others might be suspicious or fight it if changes were brought in too swiftly or without gradual persuasion and encouragement. But Patience had confidence and understanding of the characters within the Priesthood and was confident that she could carry out a gradual evolution of the Cult without upsetting anyone too much. No Priestess or Priest would be forced in any way to do the things she had in mind for them. They would be able to continue as before if they wished, but she doubted many would wish to when the new methods and pleasing rituals were introduced.
