Episode 28

Thea and I made it back, but instead of heading toward the rooms, she went for the Jeep and opened the back. I raised an eyebrow at her, but she ignored it and gestured for me to put everything in the back. I did so and had expected to follow her back to the rooms, but she stayed standing there looking at me. It only lasted a minute, just before the point of awkwardness. Once again, I now found her fingers entwined with mine, and a mischievous grin was on her face. Her grin always tried to spread itself to my own face. Almost worked every time. "C'mon. We have one more stop to make." I raised my brows at her. I was beat, and my legs felt like Jello, but before I could protest, she pulled me back to the road and, this time, across the street.

It wasn't long before I realized where exactly she was taking me. I saw it on the way to grab the rooms. Truly was hard to miss and there wasn't much imagination required to understand what type of business they ran there. A woman's salon sat on one side, and a pizza place was on the other.

We just ate but... maybe she wants pizza.

The look she gave when she winked at me proved that to be very wrong. Hunger in her eyes was undeniable, but I got the feeling it wasn't food-related.

"You don't know how lucky you are, Lark. To be living in a time where you can walk to the local shops and find one so dedicated to pleasure, desire, and the carnal self? Pulchritudo." She made a strange gesture with her fingers at the last word. Not sure what the word was, but it definitely sounded Latin.

Too tired. Why is this necessary? ... gods help me...

We got to the door, and the neon hues of the holograms they used were almost blinding up this close. Why they were turned on in the mid afternoon sun was beyond me. I noticed that the three dancing women looked distorted from this angle as she pushed her way through the door, pulling me along behind her. Her eyes lit up immediately as she said it again, but in a whisper this time, "Pulchritudo." Mine just went wide, and I swallowed hard. All the walls, everywhere you looked, there were different depictions of people in various positions being penetrated, and my gods, the number of dicks everywhere. Different sizes, shapes, and colors stood like a proud father's trophy cabinet all along the walls.

Thea had already walked off, seeming right at home. I watched as she made her way to the worker organizing lubricants at the back of the store. At first, he attempted to dismiss her, but I watched his entire demeanor change instantly as he turned to look at who was bugging him. She was leaning on the counter with one finger twirling one of her near-white wavy locks around her finger. A shit-eating grin was plastered on his weasel-looking face, and he me no attempt to hide the fact that he was eating her with his eyes. He leaned on the counter right next to her, uncomfortably close. She smiled and moved closer to him. That almost musical laugh left her lips as she rested her hand on his arm, and I watched his smile grow wider. I could hear a rumbling in my chest again as I watched the exchange.

What is happening to me?

I shook my head and walked toward the opposite wall of the store.

Get your shit together, Lark.

Clothing filled the racks around me. If they could be considered clothes. They wouldn't cover very much, so I wasn't sure. I flipped through and examined a few articles.

Guess it doesn't really matter if it's for show and not meant to come off

. The thought crossed my mind as I came across a few pairs of crotchless shorts and underwear. Some of these clothes were as neon as the holo women out front. It would be a good contrast against something else, but it by itself was just terrible.

The scent of leather hit my nose, and I closed my eyes to take it in. Loved the smell of leather. The real kind, not the fake, and the real stuff was extremely rare. Without even opening my eyes, my legs began to follow my nose. I felt my hands gently hit a glass case and opened my eyes. My nose did not disappoint. Real leather was hard to come by, yes, but even harder to find in this good condition. And yet here it is. A glass case stands before me with all kinds of leather treasures inside. Different straps and coverings. I really couldn't tell you what over half of it was. Something told me that much of it was intended for purposes I'd never dreamed of. Did I want to know?

This collection must cost a fortune.

I reached out and rested my hand on the glass. Some toys were in there that were even more valuable for the era they originated in. The old age of some was a little concerning, and I'd wondered if they were intended for secondhand use, but quickly snuffed that out. That would be absolutely disgusting, and I wouldn't let it ruin this for me.

Love the smell of leather

. I closed my eyes and breathed it in slowly and deeply. It might just be the last time I get to smell this scent in a very long time. Who really knew how many cattle were left? If any. Granny insisted there was a small reserve when she was a little girl, and she not only saw but had gotten to touch a horse and a cow. That was one of my favorite stories she used to tell me and Ryn when we were younger. It didn't mean I believed it, though.

"You have a keen eye for quality, my friend!" It came from a very stout woman with long blue hair I hadn't noticed behind the display. In my defense, she's short, and I'm tall, and the wall behind her is maybe a whole shade different than her hair. I must've been staring because she raised an eyebrow as she gestured toward the case. "The leather. One hundred percent real from an actual cow. I know you may be a bit skeptical, but this is the real deal!" She came closer to the counter and whispered, "It was seized in the raids back in 2688. Legend has it, the Maรฎtre d herself used to ride that puppy on the bottom left there for hours. That's why she used the cane. All sterilized, of course!"

I could hear Thea's laughter and the rat's cackling from the store's other side. The rumbling in my chest was growing, so I decided to entertain this conversation. "I can tell by the way it smells." Her brow rose even further than before. "No, I mean... The way it looks, too. They stopped the machine manufacturing of rare goods back in 2599. That's pure speculation, by the way. The last raids of 2688 came up empty, and no items were seized after the first three major raids and seizures in 2669. Only people. Everything after 2669 was a glorified cleanup. That's it."

She looked taken aback. Admittedly, I was pretty short with her and had come off as annoyed. It wasn't her fault. "Well, you certainly know your stuff, young man. Believe what you wish, but leather doesn't lie. Do you think that maybe it could be possible that the reports are false? As an officer on official government business, I'm not sure I'd want to write up a 'strap and ride along' on my professional report. Keep that sharp mind open. Someone other than you or I appreciating its potential value and keeping it for themselves wouldn't be an impossible scenario either." Her eyes were kind as she regarded me before changing the subject. "Any who... I'll leave you be. If after your... work-study? Well, whatever they're calling it these days, if you do decide to be a worker and not a researcher, you should consider employment here." She winked and walked away. Her complete and pure kindness left me feeling guilty for my lack of it.

I froze instantly as I felt hands slide around each side of me to rest on my stomach. The growing familiarity of her scent engulfed my senses as I felt her press her body flat up against my back, causing heat to erupt from within. "There's no need or room for jealousy here."

Jealous of what? Who's jealous?

My legs felt shaky as she rested her head on my back just between my shoulder blades. Warmth pushed itself through me to my chest. She took a deep breath. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear she was breathing me in as I was just breathing in leather. Probably just a sigh. Hopefully, she wasn't sizing me up for a meal. "You know you're going to hate me in about five minutes, right, Lark?" Still frozen, I tried to find my voice or move but couldn't. Her body seemed to fit perfectly against mine.

Hate her?

An ache started building in my stomach as her hands casually drifted across it. My eyes fell to slits as I felt them travel under my shirt, up to my chest, and her nails grazed the skin as she slid them back down. Bare skin to skin, the tingles were back but somehow more potent than I'd experienced before. Her touch was firm, but her skin was like silk as her hands traveled and explored. She must've stood up on her tippy toes because she was just able to rest her chin on my shoulder at an awkward angle. The heat of her breath traveled with her whisper straight to my ear, "I'm going to need quite a few things in here, and it's going to cost you some credits. Probably more than you wish to relinquish. It is not a discussion, however."

As quickly as I felt her touch on my skin, it was suddenly gone. Slowly, I opened my eyes to find Thea was already halfway across the store to the checkout station where the man from earlier waited. He still had that shit-ass grin. I'd love to beat it off him. She made it to the rat, but I quickly closed the distance. She spun on her heels, and with her arms out, she whined, "No peeking! No one's allowed to see." She covered one side of her mouth and whispered to me, "This one is mine. Personal for home. Well, the only thing close by that I can call home." Then she wiggled her eyebrows at me, and that was it. I needed nothing else. No further argument. My body moved without another word.

Personal.

A shiver fell through my spine straight to the aching deep in my stomach at the comment. Absently, I walked toward the exit to wait, and my imagination instantly flooded my mind with images. Thea was wearing some of the things I saw hanging up, then taking her time using many different toys from the wall on herself. Like a movie, it all instantly flashed through my brain. So vivid I could hear her moaning and begging for me to help her come apart. My knees started to feel a little weak again. I had to close my eyes just to collect myself. Sleeping in the same room as Granny might be awkward for me tonight, but it's probably the best for everyone. Even

if

this horny goddess wants me, I don't think Ryn would be happy about Thea and me sharing a room. Plus, if Ryn didn't give a shit, I couldn't trust Grann to keep an eye on Thea overnight. Philomena was looking tired as hell earlier.

Soon, Thea strutted by carrying about four decently sized bags. I followed her outside but then paused. I quickly ran my hands all over my body. Checking. Searching. Nope.

Where's my wallet...?

She must've realized I had stopped because she turned around and walked back toward me. Holding her bags out for me to take, I accepted and began transferring bags from her arms to mine. I freed up one of her arms and then watched as she pulled out my wallet, which was barely stuck in her tiny front pocket. "I did tell you that you were going to hate me. It was not a lie." That was all she said as she slipped it into my front pocket.

Once again, I found myself frozen, only this time with my mouth slightly agape as Thea rolled her eyes and headed toward the B and B.

She legit just robbed me.

The realization was there, but the rage that should've followed never came. Funds are big to me. Currency was my main security and ticket to freedom. My feet finally started after her while my mind still stayed deep in thought.

Do I even care, though?

Did I? Again, I didn't feel any anger whatsoever over the situation. Maybe it's because there was no longer an urgency within me to leave town and start a new life. I was already gone. Still, reckless spending wasn't like me, and we were going to need every bit of it we had. Curiosity got the best of me, and I shifted some bags around so that I could maybe peer inside. I only managed one and saw four odd-looking wooden boxes.

"No peeking, I said!" Thea asserted. I shook my head, and I started handing her the bags. I didn't even realize that we were already back at my Jeep. "Better not have." She wiggled her finger at me and smiled. I gave her a sheepish grin.

Maybe I'll get to see some of it later. I'm sure I could help...

Pleasant thoughts were instantly interrupted as I noticed she'd grabbed a small box from one of the bags, gaining my full attention. I looked at her questioningly as she hid it behind her back. "Shhh!" she whispered. "It's just a little something. A gift. Nothing too special. It will help Ryn to relax."

Before I had the chance to think about responding to that, she was already on her way to their room. I thought about going after her and questioning her. Instead, I watched the damn near mesmerizing bounce of her backside as she walked away before I, too, headed off to my room. I'm a recently aged-up, unsatisfied man. It is natural people. I wanted it, no doubt, but probably for all the wrong reasons. This was a vastly dangerous distraction. I needed to talk to Ryan about... everything, but I was too tired. It was only around four in the afternoon, but I hadn't slept. None of us had unless Ryn and Gran got some while we were out. Doubtful though. It's gonna be hard for me, too... I know that much.

Not surprisingly, Granny was sitting there sipping on some tea. Hoping for rest for her was a long shot. She rarely ever slept past four in the morning and never went to bed before eleven. Must've been fueling her body with only her spicy attitude for the past decade. It seemed like she had been waiting for me to get back for a short while at this point. At least long enough to consider and then make herself some tea to drink. "Come here, Lark. I won't be long. Sit with me."

I shut the door behind me, removed my shoes, and then sat down at the table with a heavy breath. It wasn't on purpose. It just escaped my mouth. The exhaustion of everything, then traveling, and then walking around with Thea had me completely worn out. Though spending time with Thea was fun, it felt good to be able to sit down. Thinking about the afternoon caused a small grin to slide onto my face. With Gran's eyes on me, I immediately felt like an idiot and let the corners of my mouth fall back down. She only hummed and nodded in response.

The rooms weren't terrible, but they sure weren't anything special either. All of the walls were tan, save for one in the bathroom. That one was a deep red color.

Weird

. The bathroom was small and simple, with just a standing shower. The room was just that, a room. Two beds with green and blue plaid sets on them. The only things over here on this side of the room were this circular table we sat at and a small electrical cooling unit for a few snacks and drinks.

She regarded me for a moment, "By your demeanor, it's safe to say you had a relatively pleasant afternoon." Her eyes were still on me, watching closely, unmoving and slightly unnerving. It was uncomfortable, and at first, I wasn't sure how to respond. Am I being too trusting? Is she disappointed? Regardless, I even felt a twinge of guilt for just having a good time at a time like this.

"Yeah... until I got robbed," I mumbled under my breath. It didn't get past Granny's ears, though. She raised her eyebrows at me and waited expectantly for me to elaborate. "Oh, nothing. What did you want to talk about?" I asked to shift the subject.

There was a palpable silence before Gran leaned back in her chair and folded her hands in her lap. "Ryn told me about the prophecy. What I spoke earlier today..." her words trailed off. Just hearing the word prophecy made my skin crawl. It didn't feel right. Didn't sit right with me.

"Premonition, you mean? Please, Philomena. This was not a prophecy. Prophecies don't end with questions." At least, I didn't think.

Did they?

C

ould be talking out of my ass.

"Hell, premonition doesn't even seem right! This felt like a message. I can't explain it. Just what it felt like." It sounded stupid, even to my own ears, as it plopped out of my mouth, but the old woman just nodded.

She tapped her cane on the ground a few times, "Regardless of what it was, it was future-oriented, and I don't like the sounds of it." Her finger was up in the air now, "The entire world will come undone on the path of your just plight, Lark." She recited. "There are no questions there. This is a statement. Two particular words stand out greatly, and those are 'will' and 'undone.' There is no stopping whatever road this leads to."

I looked her right in her eyes. Purple hues sat around the irises.

That's new

. For all her calm, collected actions, the stress was already taking its toll on her body.

Maybe a good sleep will help her out.

"Undone... you really think the world as we know it is going to end? Hasn't it already a few times now? We can't choose to zone in and pay attention to only the most frightening words of the message." I'm no expert, but the shit is too vague to sit and speculate. That could take us nowhere but a whole ton of what-ifs. I knew I needed to hear her out, though, so I waited patiently for her. What she was implying was not lost on me. Not only would the world end, but Thea was going to be the one to unravel it. How though? It was a fixed point in time, but Thea had no set plan or purpose for her lifetime here. She obviously never thought to preplan that, but how could you? She could be lying, and internally, I beat myself for being so comfortable and trusting, but I don't even know the actual circumstances that led her to be put to rest in the first place. None of us did. Plus, aren't the Great Ones supposed to know why they come and have some kind of mission or something? There's gotta be some set intention. An agenda. Hidden or otherwise.

"Lark... Who's to say? You're right, child. Undone could mean so many different things. All that is certain is there's no stopping whatever this is." She said dismissively as she removed her glasses and rubbed her eyes.

She was tired, so maybe Gran was only paying attention to this one sentence instead of the whole picture. But that one sentence alone can be read in many ways. Could just be telling Thea that she has the wrong objective. "You just told her she was on the right path. That we were going the right way..." Unless I hallucinated the whole thing.

The right path, wrong objective?

There had to be something more to this. "Granny, we are only receiving pieces of this puzzle at a time. We can't expect to have all of the answers after only being given two or three pieces."

"Lark...?" she was looking at me with genuine concern. Think the last time I'd seen her look at me like that was when I broke my arm in fourth. Looking at her now, I mean really looking at her, she seemed to be struggling. I noticed her hands had a very slight wobble, and her skin almost looked sickly. Hollow. The Pale brown almost held a yellow tinge. This alone made her seem to have aged ten years in the past twelve hours.

My brows furrowed. Thinking back, I don't ever remember a time Granny looked this sick or even was sick, for that matter. Never a single cold. "Yes, Granny? Are you alright?" The last time I saw her even close to looking like this was when Clyde passed away. This takes the cake by a mile or so.

The stubborn woman waved her hand, dismissing my question. Again, she returned my gaze with the same concern and intensity. We sat like that for a while, just staring at each other. Granny would do that sometimes, though. After a while, you get used to the staring. It's almost like she's looking into you. Shit, maybe she was? She's hardly ever got this look on her face though. In a hushed tone, she leaned in and said, "Watch and take care of yourself. Aging up is hittin ya full-on. You're changin, son. You

and

Raelynn. Be cautious around that old one. Her power is great, and we have yet to see even an inch of it."
