It had been three months since Anna broke off the relationship. The Holidays passed and the New Year came without fanfare. Although I slowly lost contact with Shane and Holly, I still managed to keep in touch with Jacinta and Melissa. The girls had helped me take my mind off of things by taking me to all sorts of parties and gatherings. I was really attracted to Jacinta, but the circumstances were all wrong and she had a steady boyfriend so any further moves were out of the question. Besides, now that things were out in the open between she and Melissa the two frequently got together to explore their newfound sexuality. I took it all in stride as best I could, knowing I wasn’t new to the end of a relationship as I had been there before, but seeing Anna at work always brought back a flood of memories. She kept a very distant, business-like approach to me and we never did see each other at our normal break times. It was as if she was trying to forget about what had happened and move on, much to my dismay.
In any case our working relationship was just the opposite of what was once our personal life – uneventful. That is until one day when I went up to her office to ask her about an overpayment on an invoice I had just received. I found the office deserted but thinking she would return at any moment I sat in her chair and waited for her to return. Looking at her desk brought back memories of the night her and I started what I thought was going to be a long and fulfilling relationship. Now, it was just a painful reminder of how things had soured. It was just a desk, static and bland in its appearance. I gazed over the scratched oak surface and drawers when something caught my eye. One of the drawers was slightly open and I saw the strap of what appeared to be Anna’s purse. Curiosity soon had the better of me and looking around to make sure no one was watching I slid the drawer open and lightly leafed through the handbag. I knew it was wrong to be going through Anna’s personal belongings but in my current state of mind I yearned to know what was going on in her life. Quietly I reached in and took out her wallet, leafing through the normal contents – driver’s licence, credit cards and identification papers. It was then that I saw a note tucked into the cash sleeve. Carefully I unfolded it and looked at the document. On it were names with three or four phone numbers beside them as well as an address with a date and time. I recognized the address as Shane’s and the date was for this Saturday at one o’clock. Suddenly I heard footsteps and quickly re-folded the letter and stuffed it back into Anna’s wallet, replacing it in her purse and closing the drawer just as she walked into the office.
“What are you doing?” She asked, slightly agitated.
“I was just coming in here to ask you about this overpayment on this invoice…” I replied, still trembling from the adrenaline of almost being caught.
“So what makes you think you can just sit at my desk and go through my drawers?” She spat back, hands on her hips.
“Look, you won’t believe anything I say right now so I’ll just leave. Please look into this and get back to me.” I answered, shoving the invoice into her hand as I left, shutting the door behind me. For the rest of the day I couldn’t help but think about what I had found in Anna’s wallet. ‘
What were the phone numbers for?
’ I thought, trying to make sense of the note. ‘
Who are the people on there and why is she going to Shane’s place on Saturday?
’ I reserved myself to the fact that I was going to go and check things out at Shane’s on Saturday just to satisfy my curiosity. If nothing else, I felt it would bring some closure to what was a sharp ending to a great relationship.
Saturday came quickly and I sped off to Shane’s place, making sure to park my car far enough away so as not to arouse suspicion. Walking down the street towards Shane’s house I looked for a way into his yard without having to go through the front gates, as I’m sure the security cameras would have caught me. About fifty feet from the gate I noticed a group of shrubs that hid a short fence about twenty feet from the road. I took this route and glancing around to make sure no one was there I leapt over the fence into the yard. My heart was beating fast as I scanned around for more security cameras. Carefully I navigated my way around the house, quietly peeking inside windows to see if anyone was home. I finally saw Shane in the kitchen talking on the phone. Pressing my ear to the window I could faintly hear his side of the conversation:
“Yeah, I know. She hasn’t done this stuff for a while but I’m sure she’ll pick up on it right away…No, she hasn’t done this type of stuff yet… What does she look like? Man she is fucking hot! I know you’re going to enjoy it. Wait a minute; I’ve got another call…Hello? Hey baby! I’m so glad you want to come see me again. The guys? Well, let’s just say that you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Okay, see you in a bit. Bye.” With that he clicked back over to the other line and told the person that it was a go and to be there in fifteen minutes. I repositioned myself closer to the front door and waited for the person to arrive.
About fifteen minutes later I heard a car pull up to the driveway and the familiar sound of the gates opening. A few seconds later a white Mustang pulled up to the house as Shane came out to greet the visitors. From my vantage point behind some shrubbery I could make out not one but three well-muscled men as they got out of the car and walked into the house. I had never seen them before and this just made me all that much more curious as to what was going on. Just then I heard another vehicle pulling up to the gates and I waited as Shane opened the gate and I remarked the sound of Anna’s car as she pulled her BMW alongside the Mustang. As she stepped out of the car I rubbed my eyes from the sight. Anna was dressed in a short black skirt with matching stockings that framed her legs beautifully. She also wore a cream-colored blouse with ruffles that showed off her cleavage and spiked heels that accentuated her muscular calves. As she walked I could hear the heels as they clicked over the concrete. I lowered myself so as not to be seen behind the bush as Anna rang the doorbell and was greeted in by Shane. Hoping that no one else was coming over I slowly crept towards the entrance, stopping at the hallway window and looking into the house. I could make out four figures as they laughed and talked in the hallway before descending the stairs towards the basement. ‘
