There is a perk of my company I always try to avoid. My business partner is a huge fan of the local baseball team. He gets season tickets every year and gives out some to the employees. I didn't realize until I went through the last envelope sent to my house that he snuck a pair of tickets to a game that was coming up. I called him to try to give it back. He told me to take my neighbor. I breathed a sigh and put them in a place where I could remember.
A few days later, we were eating dinner together at her place. As she was clearing the table, I looked over and saw a baseball in a glass cube. I looked at it closely before I felt her sneak in close. I turned towards her and was surprised by a kiss. I took it gratefully before she pulled back.
"Is that the first time you saw that?"
"Yeah," I responded. "It's a signed baseball, right?"
"It belonged to Mitchell," she started. "He was the biggest baseball fan. He took me to a few games every year before his cancer took over. I miss going to the ballpark and watching the game. I had a thing for seeing the guys in their uniforms, especially their butts."
She emphasized the last part by simulating grabbing a pair of buns before laughing at my reaction. I smiled before I remembered the tickets.
"So, wanna go to a game?"
She looked at me, trying to read my face. She knew I wasn't a big baseball fan and was probably thinking I was kidding. She noticed my facial expression didn't change.
"Yeah, sure. I'll go. You have tickets?"
I reached into my pocket and handed them to her. She looked at them before her eyes bugged out.
"How did.... these are primo seats. What did you do?"
"Carl snuck it into the last envelope of reports. I tried to give them back and he said I should take you."
Her eyes had that snarky look in them.
"Take me to the game?"
"Well, yeah. I just didn't get the chance to ask you yet."
She started laughing.
