They met at the same place every year. The Halloween party held at the city hedge maze drew hundreds of partygoers and trick-or-treaters. The maze would open just after sundown and would attract all the younger trick-or-treaters looking for a minor scare while accompanied by mommy and daddy. The teenagers usually came out a few hours later, to race through the maze, get lost, get laid, get drunk then leave to egg cars and toilet paper houses. At 10:00 pm, the real party would start after all the kids had been shuttled out. Sponsored by the local dance club, it was the place to be for the over twenty-one crowd. Bars were set up strategically throughout the maze and at locations around the perimeter. Music was pumped through speakers set up everywhere and a small dance floor was positioned to the left of the maze.
This was a party everyone looked forward to attending. These two strangers were no different, though their reasons were not the same as the other partygoers. For the last five years, they attended this Halloween extravaganza to find a secluded corner somewhere within the maze to be alone. Their time together was always brief but satisfying. They had never been formally introduced; their costumes and masks always remained in place. They never spoke beyond their words of passion and they were only together at this same time and this same place once a year. Halloween night was their night and this year was no different.
